Cox Engine of The Month
A smell, a mess and a noise
A smell, a mess and a noise
My favourite occupation!
I took the engine of the Gazelle so that I could finish the model. As usual, finish the model or set up the engine? (and test the tank)
The engine won!
However, when I say smell and a mess (the noise bit I take your understanding for granted!)
Lovely stuff!
Should have covered up the patio though!
Doesn't get much messier!
Its is a PAW 1.5cc - I ran two pints of fuel through it on an 8x6 prop. It will be refitted on the Gazelle with a 7x6 (when I find one!).
I always read the health and safety instructions.
Never got around to the Gazelle!

I love the noise and the mess but I still haven't developed a liking for the smell. I am covered in it now and can't wait to shower. Is that a new engine? It looks incredibly clean.

Re: A smell, a mess and a noise
It's a wonder you can still smell anything while destroying your nasal receptors with that filthy habit, and I'm not talking about diesel fumes. Sorry, but I watched my father in law suffer for two years in hospital, connected to oxygen full time, gradually drowning in his own mucus, unable to muster enough energy from his lungs to even cough. No other reason but smoking. My heavy smoking mother-in-law spent months in hospital recently after an episode of pooly functioning lungs. Fortunately this scared her into quitting even more successfully than watching her husband die. My father dropped dead from heart disease after 50 years of smoking. So, I feel really passionate about the subject. Sorry to hijack Ians thread, but it distresses me to see people joking about something that kills so many but is completely avoidable. Seriously, it's a senseless habit in which the plain facts should be enough to overcome any nicotine addiction.

Re: A smell, a mess and a noise
damn.... that is messy. Maybe because the oil is so dark. Is that the paraffin mostly.. or is the engine still breaking in? A combination of both maybe?
Let me know if you have trouble finding 7 x 6 props. I have some.
The woodies all have a .209"/5.3mm dia. drilled-hub. The nylon Grish/Tornado is a little smaller @ .189"/4.8mm. The other two Top Flite nylon props look to have been enlarged to 1/4".. (not by me..)
Of the woodies; the 3 Top Flite's weigh 4gr. The odd (can't read the label) woody weighs 5gr, and has a much thicker (.450") hub as compared to the other 3 which range from .355"/.365". The Grish/Tornado weighs 7gr. All of my nylon 7 x 6's have .350" avg.-thickness hubs.
These are props that I've acquired over the years. Not sure where any of them came from. They don't spec.-out for any of my engines. You can have them all if you want them.

Good heavens Ian, if I didn't know better I'd say you slaughtered a pig!
Looks like you had a good time though.

Diesels take a different touch but not hard to use. The smell gets on everything. Plane/ clothers/ car etc. Fuel is hard to get. I only have two remaining. Paw BR .061/ Russian repo Elfin 1.5 steel P/L. To my surprise runs pretty darn good. I had to lap in in as way to thight. I havw Fox .15 BB that was same way. Lapped both and my best smaller engines. Must have done it right.

Lovely. I like it. I know the feeling. Last year before building a test stand I ran a Cox engine on my 18" wide bench for about 20 minutes before realizing that the white painted wall was not white anymore. Keep up the good work!

Re: A smell, a mess and a noise
The smell is pretty wonderful really. ( I wouldn't want to bottle it like perfume though) The mess, not so much.
Funny thing about smells, a car used to transport models gets the "old castor funk" smell after a while that can never be truly removed from the interior.

Re: A smell, a mess and a noise
The mess is really something, too. I was just out running a repaired glow engine and the test stand was absolutely slimed up because the last few engines I ran on it were diesels.
