Eric, my friend, let me explain:
I always liked nickel metal hydride batteries better, you avoid a regulator and these batteries are very safe.
What is the problem?
In my country, it is difficult to get small metal hydride batteries, it seems unbelievable, this is strange for someone who lives in a country like the USA, but here many products are not available and bringing them from abroad has obstacles that make it impossible in many cases.
I don't want to talk about politics, but NOW with the new government, it is possible that we will get back on track to being a "normal" country, in this and other points. I am very hopeful about that, not only for the hobby but also for many more important issues.
So, in this case I use a lipo and a regulator, because that is what I get here, they are small, light and fit easily into these small models.
This is the first time that my regulator fails, in fact what fails is the regulator's integrated circuit, it is possible that these components are of poor quality...the previous ones I made are perfect!
Now, from this point on, I must take precautions and do several tests before flying and in the workshop.
Of course, these components that I have used are going to the trash.
The manufacturer should also go to the trash, but I don't know the origin.

.

Mauricio...what you have experienced here made me wonder why not use 2 power diodes in series  with your 7.4 volt battery. So I found this discussion just now......https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?1602545-Voltage-Regulators-and-LiFe-Battery-Packs
