Re: Lookie Here
I have an American Flyer Royal Blue S gauge engine and a few cars that my grandpa bought when my mom was 2. That would be 1955ish. I had it set up 18 years ago before my grandpa passed. I bought extra track on eBay at the time. I had to rebuild the contacts in the engine using beryllium copper strips. Ill have to dig up a picture of the setup I had.
Can easily get hooked on this.

And that's where the problem, err I mean addictions start! I think they are neat, but all I have is a Christmas Tree Train.

I'm lusting after this and have a bid on it.

But then, I have also added these over the last month.
And, Christmas is coming. Merry Christmas to me...…..HO HO...…
And I still play around a bit when they have no boiler doors.

Wow Fred, where and what are you looking for. I have bought catalogs (ebay) for as little as $3.50. The most expensive, pictured was only $12.50. 100+ pages.
I did not know that AHM marketed model airplane engines. UEDO - Veco?

Nice Bob. Glad to see you're at it! However, I have to ask. Is there any particular reason that 3 of your engines pictured have coins attached to their 'noses'? And also, were your trains as pictured here, or did you buy any 'train wrecks' and fix them up?

I've heard of placing a "Penny on the Tracks" but not like that

Re: Lookie Here
The hard part of the penny on the tracks was finding it after the train got through with it.
Mom gave away all my train stuff when I joined the Army. Along with my skis, Hot Wheels and GI Joe stuff. Not to mention all my Cox engines and airplanes. She needed a sewing room apparently.

There is a model train store here in Winchester Va. that has Lionel products stacked to the ceiling.
https://www.mariostrains.com/
I stop by frequently and shop his trash bin for HO gage stuff.
Yeah Eric, model trains are a fun hobby and generally less expensive to support than R/C - C/L model planes. The thing is, you can't dump a model locomotive in a pot of boiling antifreeze to clean it up. Well, I guess you could, but...…….
A good running steam loco can be had for about the price of two clapped out Baby Bees, a really, really nice one about the price of a Tee Dee. Diesels run about $5.00 -$25.00. In the last couple of months I have bought between 50 and 75 steam locomotives, I'm afraid to add it up but the total of all is well less than I spent on just one Cox Mercedes tether car and that includes support equipment like transformers, track, and switches. If you get into DCC (Digital Command and Control) that can get expensive, but still not to bad.
And Chancey, those were "parts" locomotives missing the boiler door among other things. I just stuck coins in there to cover up a hole and discovered that I liked it.
Mixed reaction to it over on the train forum. Purists, it's taking them a time to get used to me. But, I have gone from "Hobo", to "Gang Laborer". to "Brakeman". Over 500 posts you get Dispatcher, Conductor, or something....Pretty neat.

Bump around here for awhile. You will become an expert in no time. Lionel made many gauges.

Congratulations on your purchase.

Very nice Eric. Should bring you some enjoyment for some time. I think, if it was me, I would learn quickly about electricity! Always thought they were cool, but just never did it. A co-worker has boxes and boxes of the stuff that he inherited. All sorts of engines and cars. Now you all got me thinking, and not in a good time or way, as I have a Golden Bee offer on the table!

I just took a second look at your box of stuff Eric and it looks like you have a 2-4-2 Nickel Plate locomotive and consist. 2-4-2 meaning 2 wheels up front, 4 in the middle and 2 trailing. Consist is loco talk for a made up train of cars. Loco talk.
I thought I had never had a Lionel set, but looking at the track closely brought back memories. I remember those spike like connections. Probably was a Christmas gift to my older brother.
It looks like there is everything you need to get started. So what are you going to do with it? Build a layout, assemble it on the floor. Tinker?
Any way you do it, it's going to be fun. Looks like there are points or something in the engine. Let us know what's going on.
Bob
