The Traveling .010 Engine
Whoooops! Looks like I posted to the wrong thread! Anyway, I'm submitting this link so y'all can see what I posted: https://www.coxengineforum.com/t8589p150-follow-the-world-s-smallest-traveling-engine#179267
I regret the error but I didn't realize that there were two distinct threads for the same thing
Also, I see that there is only a two week turnaround time . Regrettably, I don't think I'll be able to complete a really nice plane before the time limit. Oh well, I'm just happy to be able to participate !

Well... lets see what our COVID-19 quarantine situation is at the end of this 2 weeks. I don't expect anyone to worry about going out and taking this thing to the post office (if their lobbies are even open) if the situation is still bad.

Re: ***The World's Smallest Traveling Engine*** SIGN UP!
Well, I have achieved another goal:) ! I have completed building not one but two planes for the Cox Traveling .010 Engine. I wanted to have something to fly it with and couldn't make up my mind, so I built both of them The Tee-Nee Delta and the Flying License Plate and they are both ready to fly .
I hate to say this but now ... after all this ... I'm scared !! I've never flown a tether plane before and have no idea what I'm doing and as for the Flying License Plate, well I'm scared because IF I fly either of them and damage the engine I'm screwed because I don't have the available means to repair/replace it . So, I may just settle for a bench run and be content with that .
Nevertheless, I must admit, the building was a ball!!

What's the go with the delta plane? Looks like a single line tether for clockwise rotation with no control surfaces. So basically, is it just a "Round the Pole" endeavour?

I don't quite understand that either , maybe modelbuilder49 will shine some light on it for us . I really like the looks though !! and the sign /plate with the box art is cool wish you could put one in the air even if turned down for slow flight . If ur over grass i don't think you will do damage to the engine .

Re: ***The World's Smallest Traveling Engine*** SIGN UP!
Yep, exactly ! When I first saw the plan, it looked pretty kool so I printed it off and decided to build it . I read the attached article but there was no explanation of how to setup, adjust or even build a suitable pylon/tether but that really didn't even figure into my thinking until yesterday when I test mounted the little engine. . SOooo, here I am"sitting on a cracked tree limb, 50' above a crocodile pond !!Oldenginerod wrote:What's the go with the delta plane? Re: ***The World's Smallest Traveling Engine*** SIGN UP!
No problem ! As I replied to oldenginerod, I have no knowledge or experience on how to fabricate/setup a pylon/tether nor any experience balancing or adjusting a tether plane although, I followed the published instructions almost to the letter. I agree though, it should be alright flying over soft ground/grass BUT it's my inherent apprehension of the unknown ... a crackup or some such mishap causing damage to the engine. It is my worse fear/thought because at this point in time, I don't know if I can come up with the funds to repair/replace it. I watched the videos of the little thing flying under radio control and Lord knows, I applaud and enjoyed them. I just don't want to be the cause of the demise of this beautiful little gem. I hope this makes sense .getback wrote:I don't quite understand that either , maybe modelbuilder49 will shine some light on it for us . Re: ***The World's Smallest Traveling Engine*** SIGN UP!
Thanks for the kind words and encouragement. in my spare moments, I've been trying to look for some information/suggestions on how to fabricate/setup a tether airplane that would be suitable for an .010 engine. So far, I've found a couple of neat videos but they were for electrics. I haven't quit though !

Re: ***The World's Smallest Traveling Engine*** SIGN UP!
Hi y'all! Guys, this "lockdown" in our community is really messing with my mind (I'm supposing I still have one )!! As many of you know, I happen to have the Traveling Cox .010 engine in my possession for the moment and because of the local county order to "stay at home" I haven been able (in wisdom) to get with my usual flying buddy so we can fly the couple of planes that I built specifically to fly with it.
As such, just sitting here in the workshop, rereading my 40+ year collection of model airplane magazines interspersed with searching the web, and with a nice pile of balsa on hand has created a bit of a problem for me . The other day, I found a really neat plan by a most prolific designer, the late Mr. Ken Willard, called the "Flying Diamond"! Gentlemen and women, I just couldn't help myself ! That pile of balsa just kept calling my name ... "Jim" ... "Jim" ... "Jim" ... "yo meathead" ... and I said "What?" Well after a very, very, brief discussion, guess what just seemed to pop out ? Yep, a Flying Diamond!! At this point it is ready for its application of finish. I 'spose I could monokote it but I'm leaning towards an application of spar varnish or stain with clear polyurethane just to be different. Whad'a y'all think?? Any suggestions??

Looks absolutely great modelbuilder49! I think you did a great job on it, and a polyurethane coat of clear would make it look great. Also, there is another option as well if you want to add color. You can use cheap craft tissue applied with it as well for a 'design' so to speak. Could do it solid, cut out shapes, endless possibilities. As it is designed for a .010, and also I have personally never flown one either, but would myself do just clear with soem tissue for color to save weight.

Hey y'all! Hope everyone is doing well! As for me .... I just gotta' get out of my workshop !! I gott'a hurry up and get this little Cox .010 "gem" outt'a here. I just finished the Flying Diamond and then built another cutie called the BD-5J ! Granted its just a rubber powered free flight but I've been seriously considering building another so I could rig it with a pusher prop !! Guys .... what's wrong with me?? It's like I have "too much" time on my hands ! This is now the 4th plane I've built since the little Cox .010 "gem" arrived ... remember the Flying License Plate and the Tee-Nee Delta !! Is this usual behavior?? Is it contagious? If this keeps up, my wife's gonna' rip my head off and pour nitro
in da' hole!!

Nah, the world may be crazy, but you have your head on straight!
Cabin fever is getting to all of us. It's great that we share a hobby that we love and occupies our time. Your models look great.

Hi everyone. I was on stunt hangar and mentioned I was looking to buy a TD 049, so it was suggested that I join this forum, and here I am. picture is 1 of the only 2 that i have from my childhood. This one is of my dad and I flying my Lil Wizard. Powered by a brand new Cox Golden Bee 049 and a pretty nice all dope finish. PS. Still trying to navigate this forum.

Re: ***The World's Smallest Traveling Engine*** SIGN UP!
Howdy y'all! Well, today was the big day for my turn with the Cox .010 and what a superb day it has been! A couple of my buddies and I went to the flying field for the first time since the 28th of March and although it was rather breezy it was/is a beautiful day. We were able to get a run on the engine and it was incredible! This was the first time any of us had ever run one or even heard one. Really neat, is all I can say. We managed to get a video of the engine run and shortly after that we decided to try the Tee-Nee Delta on the tether. We figured it was too breezy to risk a free flight with the Flying Diamond because there are quite a few seriously tall pines trees surrounding our flying site and at 71, I ain't doing much climbing!! Anyway when it came to the Tee-Nee Delta, The tether was a tent peg anchored in the ground with a 10 foot length of yellow 15lb Power Pro Spectra line. I guess you could say we were a bit like the "Three Stooges" because, of the myriad attempts, we couldn't figure out how to successfully get it in the air!! Well, after a few attempts, we decided to quit, lick out wounded pride and pack up rather than risk damaging this little gem. Lord knows, we had a ball trying!! Now, it's time to get it sent off into the hands of the next pilot on the list, Mr. FredVon.!!
