Spring starter
Looking at the picture of Jason's engines, I note that they all have spring starters attached. Although I wasn't able to tach my engines during preparation for the race, I did note that I was getting inconsistent running with a starter spring attached and once removed they appeared to run significantly smoother and at noticeably higher rpm. The suggestion may be to my disadvantage in this race, but has anyone else noticed a difference in performance with & without the spring? Before you say anything, no, the spring wasn't contacting the back of the prop. It just appeared to set up some sort of harmonic vibration which messed around with the smoothness of the run. I'm curious to know if anyone else has had a similar experience.
I hope Kim isn't relying on a starter to be fitted to make his job easier.
Rod.

I won't be using an electric starter with any of the engines in the Tach Race. All engine starting will be by flipping or by use of the engine's installed spring-starter.

I'll gladly sacrifice a couple of RPM to make Kim's job easier on the tach race. Hand flipping a modified Pee Wee would be a futile effort.

yep, me too. When I torn down the .020 to inspect, as I was reassembling that thought occurred to me to leave it off, it would be interesting to see if there really is a difference and how much, by testing same engine, with, without, with and then without again.
Rod, did you record and numbers?

Sorry Mark, didn't have an operational Tach at the time, but to my ear there was a vast difference with a couple of engines I compared. This was with a standard "no-drag" spring, so there was no comtact with the spring once started, unlike the later cam operated starters. I did nothing more than remove the spring, refit the prop & re-start it- same mounting, same fuel, same conditions, except that it took 3 shots to get it runnig forwards. I don't envy Kim's job, but it is a race so the spring had to go.
Regarding my tachometer, I have a Turnigy Mini-tach, which works ok, but chews up the Lithium button battery in no time. Next time I go to use it it's dead. Does anyone else have that problem?
Rod.

Re: Tach Race 2014 !!!!!!!!!
I wanted to enter this year - my old Golden Bee from my youth and my dad's Pee Wee .020.
Unfortunately, real life took priority over the last few weeks, and I wasn't able to re-build the .020 or clean the GB in time.
Oh, well. Just have to plan more in advance for next year.
Good luck, guys!

Re: Tach Race 2014 !!!!!!!!!
Now I feel bad about not putting mine in the package with the props. I just assumed I didn't have a chance running 18k, and blew it off. Hell, it might have run faster in Missouri.

Yo Rusty,
Know you got major crap going on down there, but if you wanted, you could express that sucker this way. The Race is actually gonna be on Sunday, so if it rolls in here anytime Saturday, it'll run.
