Tach Race 2014 !!!!!!!!!
Tach Race 2014!!!!
My boss has finally been able to nail down my schedule for next year, allowing me to set a firm date for Tach Race
2014. It's going to be a little later this year: February 15th & 16th, due some things I must attend to.
Also after talking with Mark, we've decided to restrict the race to members' entries only, with each member eligible to enter one engine in each class. While it was great fun to include family members, we wanted to narrow it down so that each contestant would know for sure that they are competing on a level field. Family members can still compete of course, using your entry slot for that class. I hope that this is well with everyone, as it's a sincere effort to make the Tach Race fair and competitive for all entrants.
While I've got the following weekend set as a "Rain Date", there's not much chance that we'll need it, short of an emergency. I've again set up The Skunk Works with an indoor test stand, so the weather will not be a factor, and the temperature swings through the day will have no impact, giving everybody as identical run conditions as possible.
The engine rules are the same as last year's, along with the fuel and props used, with some new Guidelines for the .020 class. This year, they WON'T be "Outlaws" !!! The fuel will also be fresh 25% Sig, and the prop will be the gray Cox propeller (I'll get the diameter and pitch listed) as we used last year.
I'd like to get them all in by the middle of the week...say ...the 12th or 13th...but will still throw them in the batch if I get them Friday. After their runs, the engines will be given a light dose of Bernie's Xena Lube, and lovingly repacked for their return journey home by Stewardess Susie.
Please E-Mail me for my snail-mail address. I've once again recruited my postman to keep a wary eye out for the engines sent by USPS and he will bring them up to my house rather than leave them in the mail box by the road. I'll also have a weather-proof box at the house this time for both postal and UPS/FedEx-type deliveries.

TACH RACE 2014 !

Any combination of Cox parts, reed or rear rotor.
Any porting, grinding, chopping, you think will work.
Any head/glow plug or glowhead, RR-1 or Rear rotor type of rear induction systems are fine.
NO front induction TD/Medallion crank/crankcase. NO Cyclon, VA, & Norvel stock or modified to reed induction.
The intent is that these be Cox-based engines like the Black Widow, Sure-Start, Space Hopper, RR-1, Space
Hopper, etc.
___________________________________________________________________________

Any AMA legal Cox rear reed, with tank. Except no Cyclon conversion.
See AMA rules for more info.
__________________________________________________________________________

.020 Unlimited Class: Same as the Unlimited Big Boys
.020 Pee Wee: Same as Mouse
__________________________________________________________________________
Contest Director will have the final determination of class placement.
___________________________________________________________________________
Contestants will send engines (Limit one engine per class) in a returnable box with return label filled out (no priority
mail) plus adequate funds to cover return shipping. Please let me know by P.M. or a note on the main page when you launch your engine my way, so I can sort of keep track as to who is actually "In Transit" !!!
Please shoot a note my way with any questions you might have. As always, I'll be in contact with Mr. Mark if we hit a snag.[/b]

Cool! It'll also move the event far enough (hopefully) from the Holidays to avoid "shipping trauma"!
Also, if any of you "Propeller Ninjas" might like to volunteer your Prop Balancing Services, I could send you the 5-3's and .020 props for your attention. I've got a magnetic balancer that works fine for weed/finger-chopping duties on the hill, but past discussions of balancing them on the hub's axis have intrigued me.
Anyway, if you might like this assigned duty, please let me know !

Re: Tach Race 2014 !!!!!!!!!
I'd be happy to. I have a Top Flite balancer and am good at balancing, but sometimes I give up on the hub and have to settle for horizontal on both sides. I don't want to alter the hub so much that it reduces its integrity and causes a shrapnel condition. Being so close to center, it's not as critical as the blades.Kim wrote:Cool! If you send them to me, I'll balance them. If someone else can handle the hubs better, then I'll defer to them.

Will you be needing any extra engine test stands to borrow for the race? I can send mine along with my entries.

Hey Jason,
Thanks, we've got four, so I think we're set. If you would like to send it with your engines though, that would be fine. I'll be sure to get it back to you!
Thanks Again !

Re: Tach Race 2014 !!!!!!!!!
Just wanted to bump this back to the top for a bit.
We've got a ton of stuff going on here, with all these great, assorted competitions happening, so I will pop this up once in a while to augment the tag Jacob put up over on the left side of the page !!
The Tach Race is still a pretty good ways off, so there's no rush...just like to occasionally boot it to the top.

Re: Tach Race 2014 !!!!!!!!!
Should be fun, as always.
I'll just send in one PeeWee for the stock class, as there doesn't seem to be a Novice class this year. I would also like to clarify ahead of time that the knurled head on my PeeWee is NOT a high compression glow head, but merely an early one where it was marked for no rhyme or reason.

Get your calipers ready Kim!!!
We are going to need a judges ruling on Matt's pee wee head.

I'm going on Surfer Kris' identification and Google research.
Re: Tach Race 2014 !!!!!!!!!
I will also add that the new .020 glow heads sold by Bernie are high(er) compression, so most engines are likely sporting them anyway.
I don't have a spare head, so if I bought one now I would just increase the performance of my engine.

Yeah man, totally kidding. That joke was a flop...
I agree with Surfer Kris's rundown as well.

Re: Tach Race 2014 !!!!!!!!!
I'm thinking that if we compare the .020 class with the larger "Mouse" class ("Shrew Class"?), that maybe Tee Dee heads would be allowed anyway. Need some input on this.

Re: Tach Race 2014 !!!!!!!!!
It's not really an issue as there is no such thing as a .020 TD head. Just two externally different style heads with the same combustion chamber.

The problem is, there was never a way to tell if the heads were high compression without careful inspection of the inside. (I have compared mine with others in the past and the chambers looked identical) TD .020s had both the knurled and non-knurled heads, and both were higher compression. In addition, heads manufactured today are higher compression than the ones Cox made, and offer better performance. In my opinion, a "TD" head has become a bit of a loose term at this point.
It's not really a big deal to me though. Kim is welcome to look at it when he gets it, I'm just doing it for fun.
Shrew class sounds interesting, maybe Field Mouse.
Re: Tach Race 2014 !!!!!!!!!
Yep, same rules only displacement has changed, build it to how you see fit, as long as its got a reed (and a tank for mouse) there shouldn't be any issues.
This is the reason we changed it, so there wouldn't be any of this, legal non-legal stuff, if you want to change needle, head, etc. or polish, file, chop, smash, whatever you can.

My engine is completely stock, so I'd rather not go against the Mouse group if possible.
Re: Tach Race 2014 !!!!!!!!!
You might place higher than you think. A well-tuned stocker can get up there next to the others.

I'm gonna start bumping this to the top every other day to remind guys!
I've gotten my first Tach Race 2014 engine...from Mr. Rodney Boreham ! It arrived yesterday...from WAY Down Under...Yes, Australia !!!! Gonna notify him over on the .049 Collectors Group here in a moment.
I've got my fresh Sig 25% on the shelf, and Stewardess Susie (who now works for Hampton Crop Dusting Services, and so, will be known from here forward as "Duster Susie") on board as Official Engine Oiler.
Yo Rusty ! The props will be on their way late today or tomorrow! Thank you for the assistance !
Everything else is a "GO" at this point, and I shall be posting here as soon as each engine arrives...here we go again !!!

I don't think I'm entering this year. I might, maybe, pull a baby stunt bee and send it, but nothing special is in the works.
