Re: Tach Race 2014 !!!!!!!!!
Thank you Kim for hosting the race and for putting up with us and our engines, Susie for your assistance, and Rusty, Matt and Bernie for their donations.
Re: Tach Race 2014 !!!!!!!!!
Thanks to Kim and his team for doing all the work and it is our pleasure to have been able to contribute some prizes.
Re: Tach Race 2014 !!!!!!!!!
Great race! One of these days I'm going to have to sit down and get that old Venom clone to run so I can send it in for the next race.

Boost pressure too high blew the entire top of the crank case off the Rolls Royce Griffon V12. Lots of pullers use the Griffon V12 airplane engine that was used in the Spitfire.

HI Kim,
Just a note to say THANKS to You, Your Volunteers, & the Prize Sponsors for hosting a very entertaining event. It is most excellent reading.
It helps take my mind off of complaining about the sub zero freezing temperatures over here...
Great work & thanks to all who made it happen! Cheers,
Paul ( aka Mr. Mouse)

That's some very good performances, especially on the .020 engines.
Could one ask for a few hints on improvements or are these trade secrets?

Re: Tach Race 2014 !!!!!!!!!
I'd be interested in hearing about the .020's those are some really good numbers out of those Pee Wee's
I'd be willing to bet most of the Mouse engines were built following the Mouse racing guide by Paul G.
It's what I used, but I didn't follow it exactly because my engines will never be in an airplane.

Re: Tach Race 2014 !!!!!!!!!
I went down to 2 gaskets this year (from 3) on my unlimited, the heck with the ability to needle an engine, it paid off with increase in RPM, I knew it was a strong engine, just lacked a little zip.
An overly sensitive needle is probably ok on ground and I should of done this a couple years ago, but when a engine unloads in the air, a sensitive needle could go lean real easy.
My Mouse, I don't know...need to do some testing and parts swapping, right now I suspect the reed?
The .020 I found one in my collection that was kind of mangy and had no head gasket, so in a last minute thought, why not?

Re: Tach Race 2014 !!!!!!!!!
Hopefully Kim has the time to post pictures soon. Not hurrying him though. I like to look at the different combo's. It doesn't tell what is going on inside, but it's interesting to see the variations.
My unlimited this year was a dismal failure, but like I mentioned earlier you only get what you put into it. Last year I spent 2 weeks of testing and tuning to get the engine where I wanted it. This year I tore it down to make some changes and then got the flu. I changed the head, piston/cyl and backplate added 5 shims and sent it in unrun.
Everyone put up some real good numbers this year. I think next year the competition will be stiff. I really enjoy the tach race as it allows me to tinker and is mentally challenging.
I think it would be fun to mess with porting and crankcase volume.

Re: Tach Race 2014 !!!!!!!!!
yep, I agree it would be neat to clean up the inside of case and open (deepen) the intake ports with a Dremel. push that ball socket to the limit!
Re: Tach Race 2014 !!!!!!!!!
I built several engines in each class I entered till I got one would run to 19K. The others ran like crap.
Ron builds a Mouse, no test runs, turns 20+K with the NV closed. Go figure.
I think I've got all I can out of a Sure Start cylinder, got to try something else.
I wish Mark would have left the gaskets in!

Hey Guys,
Here are the Class Photos from Tach race 2014. Please let me know of any omissions or other mistakes and I'll correct them!
Rodney Boreham:
Matthew Mullaney---M.F.D. :
Bernie @ Cox International:
Jason Birnschein:
Doug Veazey:
Matt @ Ex Model Engines:
Mark Boesen:
Ron Cribbs:
Bob Dickerson:
Wayne Sievers:
That's the Photo Wrap-up for this year. Please let me know of any miss-spelling/miss-labeling (there's a DEFINITE possibility of That happening!), and I'll correct it.
The "Running Photos" are a bit sporadic, and I think I missed a couple times of getting engines running on the stand. I WILL update and insert any I find, as I like the look of these things when they're wound up tight and going!
I'll now be sorting everything and getting the engines ready to go.
Thanks again guys, it was fun and an honor to host this Great Race !
Kim

Yeah my engines run on "awesome" so no fuel is actually needed.
When I get it back I will let you know what's up. It must have been getting fuel somehow. I also cut my NV silicone tube a little long so it's nice and tight. It may have been really hard to turn giving the impression that it was fully closed.

Re: Tach Race 2014 !!!!!!!!!
I will have to dig up some PeeWee from boxes, I don't remember them doing those good numbers...
One problem I've had was that the needle was very sensitive, and needed constant fiddling. How long does an engine need to keep an rpm reading for it be considered valid in the tack race?

Kris, Have you tried removing the .020's needle and fitting it with a silicone fuel tubing sleeve/washer?

No, not on the Pee Wee, I just check the other usual, and unusual, suspects...
Like the venturi to backplate seal etc.
When I put a diesel head on it, all the problems went away, and I never looked back...
