Well, this is no engine either, but definitely engine-related. I got this field box with all kinds of stuff for a very reasonable price, delivered.

Here is the box:
Recent engine acquisitions - Page 7 Image13

There's a power panel mounted in the inside of the lid plus some tools and even a tach (broken or battery dead, will check):
Recent engine acquisitions - Page 7 Image12

To my surprise, among the random propellers and stuff there were also a starter (works too), a couple of glow plug clips AND a large-but-light LiFePo battery!
Recent engine acquisitions - Page 7 Image14

I am pretty happy with this purchase Thumbs Up

That is one cool bit of kit

BTW the fuel pump and starter will accept just about ANY battery voltage so your options on heavy or light weight batteris are wide and need not break the bank

I got tiers of lugging 12VDC 7 to 9Ahr bats and found the very light 2VDC primary cells at 5 Ahr are a good fit for starting, fuel pump.. I found a on line battery holder for the starter and put two * VDC NIMH (cheap these days) in series for 16 VDC to the motor... I initially had them parallel and the starter worked but lower RPM than I wanted

My fuel pump will flow a good enough stream to fill a tank on as little as 3 VDC...on the full 12VDC it will spurt a little fast for my 3 to 6 oz tanks... basically designed for RC flyers with 12 to 30 Oz tanks

Thanks Fred. That battery is amazingly light, like a feather compared to lead batteries. It is rated at 12V / 17Ah, I haven't weighed it yet but I am guessing it is around 2lb max. Lithium batteries are a bit fussy about charging but this one says it has the PCM (Protection Circuit Module) integrated. I'll need to find a manual for it or ask the seller before charging.

I suppose I can use the power panel for Cox glowheads too, since it is adjustable, just set it at 3 Amps or so, right?

I think I will continue to use my little syringes and bulb bottles for fueling my Bees Smile

Thanks guys Smile

Eric, the box is "Wisent" brand, I looked it up and it seems to be a house brand for "Bauhaus" hardware stores, similar big box chain as Home Depot or Lowes in the USA. Originally I think it is a toolbox for electricians or maybe a professional camera box or something. They are not very expensive, a similar box was about 60€ on their website. If it were sturdy enough for me to sit on, it would be perfect lol!

This kind of box is handy in Finnish climate, as it rains often, the grass is often wet or muddy, and there's usually snow in the winter. I like the traditional open boxes as everything is easy to find and reach, but due to the weather it would not be the most practical choice, although a lot of people use them anyway.

I had never seen a box like this either. Until now I only have had an open plastic tote or a bucket in the back of my station wagon, this is way more professional looking Smile

I like that field-box Kari! It caught my eye being a Musician. I have a couple of "SKB" road-cases.. and they're really great protection for whatever's inside. Yours looks to have some nice storage-space in the bottom. I'm a big fan of the clear-plastic zip-seal bags made for freezer-storage of food. These stack well.. vertically; side by side.. and can contain spare-props, tools, first-aid supplies, sun/safety-glasses.. while keeping them "clean" as well as electrically-insulated from a possible short-circuit. Ken Cook has mentioned the importance of protecting your field-box against accidental "electrical-shorting" and possible resultant fire-damage.

I don't generally leave batteries connected to any component.. other than "supervised-charging".. and am constantly aware of their terminals with regard to sources that could cause shorting. I'm sure that you're aware of the conditions that can present a fire-hazard.. but I mention it here for the benefit of others who might want to build a custom field-box.

Kari,

I prefer to remove the glow plug/head to be used, reduce the panel current control to minimum, then connect the leads. Now you can increase the current slowly while observing the glow element (shaded from the sun) until a normal bright orange glow is reached.

Don't forget to repeat the adjustment if you connect an unkown plug, or glow head.

As an example, my Gilbert 07 heads will burn out at normal dry battery voltages, so I only use a NiCad igniter (~1.25V under load), or a power panel adjusted per above. The best setting is about half that of a Cox, or other good plug/head.

Scored this on ebay the other day for 26 bucks, seller photo before and after clean up.
I have one already bench tested results good enough to buy a TT GP-07 back up.
Clean running engine, quite, can recommend.

Hello friend !, interesting engine .... a while ago there was one of these in a sales page of my country, it looked tempting! .... have you experience with it ?, how about the overall quality of the engine? will you put it in some model?

The engine is fine and will run for many hours of enjoyment.
If you can get one at a good price you will enjoy the clean running
all oil goes out the muffler. Yes I would use it in a project I like
to have a backup engine before I use one for flying.

Looks like with a slight mod to the header I could use a tuned pipe or just the header allowing the engine
to breath very well with exhaust control / would need to add a pressure tap.

That's looks like the MkI version, the MkII were a little better. It is not really the muffler that is holding them back, and they can easily make a lot more power than that, even using the stock muffler.

In order for a tuned pipe to work, you do need to have a proper engine timing for it.

MkI with a turbo plug and stock muffler:
APC 7x3 prop, 10%nitro
16700rpm / 31.74oz thrust / 177W / 0.241hp

The Norvel is both stronger and lighter (75g including the muffler). On 10% nitro it will spin an APC 7x3 prop at around 17500rpm.

The Thunder Tigre .07 is more comparable to the Cox Queen bee, they are both quite heavy and no powerhouses. In stock form the TT .07 is a little weaker than the QB though.

Comparison using the HQ carbon / nylon 5x4.5
Note the still shot in the vids:

Norvel .074 made extra power with a heli muffler
allowed it to breath a bit more. Using a bullnose flat
tip blade produces more thrust.

The TT-07 to get the same rpm had to use the other version
by HQ a swept speed tip prop.

That Heli muffler breaths much better than the TT makes more noise of course.

However I did recieve some OS Gold limited addition plugs in the mail it might make
the engine feel special and produce more power lol. Laughing

As you can see the reality is not so bad 14.2g difference as shown.
Data is best served with photos and video removes all speculated opinions.
Clearly the larger conventional muffler adds weight, however if you want
a nice quite engine, it's the way to go. Standard glow plug is a plus in convenience.

The Norvel makes less power with the stock muffler the modified Heli muffler was
a plus. Of course if you are swinging larger dia. props the watts will calc out higher.
The TT GP-07 clearly produces much more power than the Cox QB per vid.

Norvel .074 / APC 6x4 Static Results:
Modified Heli Muff / 19,147 /.262hp  / 196w / 22oz thrust / 73 mph
Stock Muff / 17,603 / .203 hp / 151.4w / 19oz thrust / 67 mph
* Will bench test the TT GP-07 with this prop.

Well that's a porky Norvel you have there Wink , perhaps it is the different spinner, but they shouldn't be more than about 80g straight from the box, spinner and all included. The TT 07GP is then about 23g more, which is about 28% heavier (!).

The standard performance test for the Norvel .074 engine was to put on an APC 7x3 prop. It should do around 17000rpm on 10% nitro (stock muffler), and 17500rpm is common once they are properly run-in.

Perhaps with the stock Queen Bee head, I've never liked those adaptors, the TD/Medallion .09 ones are a direct drop-in though. Here are some of my numbers on these engines;

Stock TT 07GP, 10% Nitro, Graupner 6x3 prop;

17500rpm / 18.69oz thrust / 0.150HP / 110W

Queen Bee (.09 Turbo head), 10% Nitro, Graupner 6x3 prop;

17900rpm / 19.75oz / 0.160HP / 117W
