Re: Recent engine acquisitions
Nice bunch of AMF/WenMac/Testors! Did you buy the whole lot just for the Needle valve and spraybar? I'd been watching a "lot" of WM parts and pieces just for a couple of gasket sets, but the lot went W A Y over my budget for what I wanted out of it:
I DID just get this lot from a guy in Toledo,OH. thanks to Freds post on his listing on RCgroups. The seller and I were going to meet Half way between Toledo and Grand Rapids, but he got his Pay Pal account re-activated to receive payment. He just boxed and mailed it all to me. Dropped off Saturday at 11:30am was on my porch Monday at 1pm!! All for 11.65 in postage. ALso recently got a 96oz jug of Berrymans Dip for cleaning these up, DIP, soak, brush, rinse, lube and the look like NEW!

Re: Recent engine acquisitions
Wow Rene, my dream buy!! Look at all that stuff!!!!!! Closed end Cox and Wen Mac wrenches.......and the glow heads etc. NIP ............ and, and the engines. And Berrymans. Wonderful.
Envy X2
I really just needed that NVA, the rest was icing on the cake. The reason why I need it. This engine was a mess but it cleand up nice and I was real proud of myself. Then I tried to run a wire through the spray bar.

Re: Recent engine acquisitions
Postage Stamp Backplate COX (Stuka 290/302-1) engine, bought at local auction site in Serbia , within trashed STUKA model.
Stuck, dusty, gummed, soaked overnight in old fuel,
Dismantled, cleaned, checked, looks like it was not run more than single flight with STUKA.
And is now ready for 2023. flying seasson...
Wondering the year of production, 1960's or 1970's ?

Re: Recent engine acquisitions
Mist likely the 70-s, the engines from 60-s mostly had thin wall cylinders and tapered crankcase nose, whereas yours has a stepped wall cylinder and straight crankcase nose.

Re: Recent engine acquisitions
Köszönöm Andras , just saw number #2 stamped on cylinder , so, this should be single bypass cylinder, which is more or less standard one.balogh wrote:Mist likely the 70-s, the engines from 60-s mostly had thin wall cylinders and tapered crankcase nose, whereas yours has a stepped wall cylinder and straight crankcase nose.
Hope will run well, on some new CL model.
RGDS
Nenad

Nice lot, can I see some new in blister pack RC carbs ?
Are they for a td09 ?
That stuka looks like a viable airframe ?

Looks OK, only port aileron is broken but repaired.
Canopy, Landing gear , pilots, spinner, bomb and gun are missing.
Bought it to have another engine, first one with postal stamp backplate.
Another old-stock red postage stamp backplated 290 reedie
I could not resist bidding on this red postage stamp backplated 290, my all-time favorite COX reedie. Prior to bidding, the British ebayer/seller was kind enough to find out for me it had a No 1 stamped under the exhaust port, and because the thin wall cylinder also means tapered bore, this strongest (or the second strongest after the BW) and most durable 049 product engine had its destiny signed with me..my new year's resolution was ditched..I bid and won..
It must have been born in mid- or late 60's, one of those thousands of COX engines salvaged form a plastic COX C/L plane, maybe the Corsair (that had the 3 bladed prop and red rubber spinner, and vertical cylinder and NV) after completing a few flights ending in a disaster. Then years or decades spent in a drawer of the prior owner..The postman just delivered it to my doorstep.
Pretty gummed up, I completely disassembled it, removed and cleaned even the crankshaft, degreased and cleaned all parts, slightly reset the ball-joint, and carefully filed flats on the top fin for the wrench, before removing the cylinder...this one goes into active service, so the flats on the top fin are definitely needed for the ease of occasional servicing, or after adding my home made exhaust throttle. The engine arrived with exhaust openings luckily untouched by the COX wrench while pre-owned.
Very low use, the honing marks are almost visible on the cylinder inside, shiny piston bottom, the beryllium star reed backside just slightly worn by the backplate opening rim... end yes, a nice pinch on TDC in a confirmation of the tapered bore . Full, like-new compression, with no blow-by even after getting hot (checked after the bench test run)
Replaced the abused starter spring with a better one, added a black seal on the NV-end of the spraybar, a Goldberg mount and a black COX prop. Applied gun-blue on the cylinder to restore the signature/beautiful black COX fins.
Assembled and bench tested with the 5x4 black COX prop...the stock, low compression head and 20% nitro were enough for a 17k speed after carefully waking up the Sleeping Beauty in a short, rich mixture four-stroke initial run...

Re: Recent engine acquisitions
Congratulations on the engine Andras…. The description of the rehab says that it is receiving great care…. One more goodie on these engines is the fine thread needle valve that makes setting easier to find and stay put…. Also, I want to believe that the pumping action of the reed provides reliable fuel draw and makes them excellent candidates for throttle work…..Will be interesting to see your plans for it

You definitely have a keeper there, András, should make a good compliment to any CL, FF, or RC aircraft.

Re: Recent engine acquisitions
Thank you Robert and George, my next project is either a new Sterling Lil Roughneck or another Quickie100, both RC, and both planned with firewalls to accept horseshoe backplates and the Goldber mount on the red postage stamp backplate reedies. I am now engaged in making my DIY exhaust throttle for the thin wall cylinder of this latest COX acquisition.
