Re: Skyray 35 Build - Faux Streak look
It flies perfectly. The OS .25fp that Jason_wi gave me cranked on the first flip, no exaggeration.
Unfortunately my right arm was injured badly by a nurse Thursday drawing blood for a free PSA test. Figured I'd save some money. I could neither fuel it, crank it, or fly it. I tasked Wayne with the maiden and he took to the air with it. It needed a trim tab, and after adding that, he reports that it's quite competent in the air. He put it through some pretty rigorous paces.
I have pictures and a semi video from Triple Tree Aerodrome, and will post later. this is taking all I got to write. Looks like some good posts that need replies, so I'll try here and there tonight and tomorrow.
Here are three that don't need editing. Never got the silver swooshes on the wing. When I get better I will.

Great job Rusty!
Can't wait to see the video. Tough luck about the arm, but you will be flying again soon.

Sorry to read about your injury Rusty. The plane looks sweet.
Glad the maiden went well, mixed emotions for you I'm sure.

Re: Skyray 35 Build - Faux Streak look
Yeah, even though disappointing it was still exciting to see it fly/ so nicely. Don't know why the need for the tab, maybe my Monokote is too tight somwhere. Anyway it looked great in the air doing loops and wingovers.Cribbs74 wrote:Great job Rusty!

I left early, hated to miss the group picture, but it was 107 and mu arm started bleeding internally again. Typing seems to help loosen it back up some. I'll get the pretty stuff done for next time and fly it myself. My silver paint bubbled up in the sun too, but now that it's flown, beauty takes a back seat.
I'll be back! These hematomas take a couple of weeks. I'm on the ice packs now. Gotta keep it moving, which is the hard part.
Okay, all, thanks for keeping up with my long detailed project! Thanks again Jason for the perfect powerplant

Beautiful model!!! I've done plenty of acrobatics in front of the screen trying to read what's written on the wings, but I can't.

Re: Skyray 35 Build - Faux Streak look
Thanks, Lieven. I didn't have time to put my eagle-wing shaped version of the traditional Flite Steak swoosh with aluminum Monokote on, so I used a felt tip marker and wrote,OVERLORD wrote:Beautiful model!!! "Pretty Decorations Go Here."
I'll get that on there as soon as I can use my arm again to work on it. If you're familiar with the traditional Flite Streak colors, picture the center color being silver and roughly shaped like an eagle's wing with the fingerlets on the tip ends. I was disappointed I didn't get that on there, because it lends meaning to the name "Osprey"(a sea eagle), and will really enhance the looks.
I don't know what's up with my phone camera lately. Pictures in the bright sun are hazy and dull. I was hoping for crisper pictures.
Rusty
EDIT: Oh, I didn't notice the next page. Waffleman beat me to it. Thanks WM.

Re: Skyray 35 Build - Faux Streak look
I thought I had updated the weight, I know Ian was interested. The total AUW is 34.5 ounces. Not light, but not fat. A box stock Skyray is 35-36 ounces.

Very interested. Even though the weight saving may not seem significant - we have to bear in mind that the overall weight has incorporated improvements. I have enjoyed watching the build.
Now that you have finished, I have started and will revert to my thread when I get the time to post pictures. A clue though - I cut full ribs (3 ply, 6 3/32nd balsa and 18 1/16th balsa) and 24 half ribs (two of them ply) only took 40 minutes!

Please, quick opinion before the glue sets
I made my long promised eagle wings. It looked cool on graph paper. The template looked cool laying on the wing. The finished product looks to me kind of crappy. I'd like your opinions before the Monokote glue sets. Do I peel it off and try again or is there hidden beauty?
Lol. Please.

Re: Skyray 35 Build - Faux Streak look
I don't think it looks crappy Rusty.. but I do think that the T/E cut-outs on the silver could extend further forward and curve slightly. This would expose more of the "blue" for a better blend. Of course it will look more proportional with both sides being done. Place the other side on the wing without tacking.. and see how it looks. Do you have any "white" film? A smaller but similar shape inside the silver might look really good.
Re: Skyray 35 Build - Faux Streak look
Thanks Roddie, I think I'll go out and give it another lookover. I will lift the TE and enlarge those curved cutouts, that alone might help a lot.

You may need to brush in some detail with a paintbrush and some fuel proof paint that sticks to plastic.

Looks cool. Two tone abstract but definitely a wing. This is one of those times when less is more.

Okay, I have a couple of new looks to show. I kind of like the first one. Don't y'all like these better?

Re: Skyray 35 Build - Faux Streak look
I like the first one too. What do you have in mind for feathers, like feather decals? I tried to get feathers for the rudder and stab but my image searches turned up very little I could modify to fit. I even tried deconstructing an Indian Chief's headdress. I was going to make water slide decals for them.Cribbs74 wrote:I like the first one. Have you considered feathers?

My 7 digit AMA number will be in the silver on the outboard wing, and Osprey will be in the silver on the inboard wing.

Painting feathers may be quicker, but it could be done with monokote, but very tedious I imagine.

Yes... and you can't really make a total assessment until the text is applied. Text will "pull it all together" I think. Be sure to investigate different "fonts/sizes".. and in "black".. like the canopy... I think would look sharp.
EDIT: I like the "raptor" on the tail!!!!
Re: Skyray 35 Build - Faux Streak look
It takes me about 10 minutes to cut the Monokote wing overlay. Not as tedious as it looks. I think I'll keep it simple and it'll look pretty good. I need some new scissors though. That helps, And some small curved fingernail scissors too.
Thanks for helping me work it out. I think I'm on it now. I'll try to finish it tomorrow.
I'm going to call Wayne and see if he wants to go fly late this week. I think I'll be good to go. Still working on holding the arm straight out, but improving.

Yeah that would look pretty awesome. I'm happy with what I got now though, see what you think of this.
The bubbles in the picture are fixed now. They kept coming back so I got some clear fingerenail polish underneath and pressed them out. Hopefully it'll stay. I had to leave it because I couldn't keep my hands off.
