Anyone know if this ugly old plane has a name?
Someone at the club gave it to me. It was made from plans in a magazine decades ago. It has some minor repairs needed but no wet wood. 30" wingspan and 26" long, and light as a feather. It came with a Big Mig .061 on it. I think I may put the MP Jet .061 on it.
Since my old Stuntman chopper, formerly named Green Death is retired, I might call it Green Death II if I don't repaint it. It's one ugly beast. About as plain and basic as it gets. It might make a good trainer for friends. I hope the MP Jet doesn't feel insulted.

It kinda does, except that one looks good. Now I know how to paint it.

The MP Jet engines are nice, loud and screamers, just like we want them. But you can't use MP Jet and the word "trainer" in the same sentence...

Ha! Yeah I was wondering if it might blow the wings off of it. I don't know what to expect of the Jet, but I'm guessing it's a helluva lot more of a handful that a Tee Dee. I know I need a real plane for the MP Jet but at least this will be something to play with until I build one.
Speaking of blowing the wings off, I've looked at the ReFried Bean and I'm pretty sure it will fly again. It flew too damn good to be retired to a hook in the hangar. That outboard wing broke off clean between the ribs where it passed through the tail-boom . The boom was not damaged and no ribs were even broken. Strange.

That plane looks like one of Dick Sarpolous designs. The wing span sounds correct and appearance wise it looks correct. They actually flew quite well some of them using TD's. I built a White Lightning which is a large sheet wing. As long as the wings aren't flexing, they fly well. If they do, performance is drastically sacrificed. Ken

Alright then, I'll dress it up and fly it. It looks like a fairly easy project. A little glue, some sanding and paint, and a set of landing gear ought to do it. I'll give the MP a few more break-in runs. It's only had about 8 ounces of zero nitro run though it so far.
Thanks for the identification. It does look like a T-28 Trojan. I'll see if I can find some of those Star and Stripe stickers.

Hey, I come from a long line of sailors. Go Navy!
Mine may not be exactly a Trojan but it's close enough.

Re: Anyone know if this ugly old plane has a name?
i found some stars and bars, shoot me a pm with your address and i throw 'em in the mail.
If its not, it should be pretty easy to make into one, add a subfin on rudder and redo canopy lines.

That's what I was thinking too. I like custom modding, so that's right up my alley.Mark Boesen wrote:i found some stars and bars, shoot me a pm with your address and i throw 'em in the mail.

Thanks Husker, PM sent.

I had thought about that, it looks pretty close, but I'm leaning toward a T-28 that someone didn't add subfin. Also the wingspan is too long for the Deweybird.
FYI, I'm not sure, but I believe I read somewhere that the Dewey Bird is actually the Li'l Toni/Cosmic Wind racing plane?

Re: Anyone know if this ugly old plane has a name?
In any case, it's going to be a T-28 when I get through with it.
Whatever he painted it with is very thin, not even hiding the wood grain. I'm going to sand off what I can and fix a couple of cracks. The elevator is broken and the fuse was repaired and might be slightly crooked. I'll add the sub fin and whatever else it needs for the right shape. Then add landing gear and put some nice colors on it trying not to add much weight.
The MP Jet might be overkill but I'll figure that out later. I have no idea where the c/g should be at this point. I'll use a tank instead of a bladder for a change since I doubt if it's going to be terribly aerobatic.
Something to do while the weather sucks.

Re: Anyone know if this ugly old plane has a name?
I'll go with T-28 after seeing the side by sides. i was rooting around Brodaks and it jumped out at me. The wing tip shape caught my attention.
You can probably go with 20% wing cord and it will fly ok. Trim from there after a few flights. If the wing is 5 inches LE to TE then 1 inch from LE is a fair starting point, probably not perfect though.

CG is really not that critical, 1/5 to 1/3 from LE will get you in busines.
Re: Anyone know if this ugly old plane has a name?
Haha, there's a pilot in the cockpit. Thanks for the illustration, I'll keep it in the green lines.
