Re: COX .020 POWERED SPEEDSTER
I cover the balsa and ply surfaces only after going over with fine grit and a proper wipe down with a cotton cloth.
Looking for a clean polished finish to insure best possible bond with the covering.
Proper iron temp is everything as well, can be pull separation tested tested on some prepped scarp wood.
The .09 plane had a piece of clear tape hinged at the aileron control horn and wing prior to covering to improve no
cover hinge separation over time. The constant push / pull action makes this extra step worth it with larger surfaces.
Proper full covering with no expose wood is key to avoid exhaust oils do not wick under the covering.
The small engine displacements do just fine up to 15 size engines with proper technique and covering brand / age.
Note the top surface hinge has a slight bevel induced by the iron tip ran along the crease line to establish consistent
hinge point.

Re: COX .020 POWERED SPEEDSTER
Well I have finished all the structural work and mechanical details.
I decided to hook up the ailerons with just .055" music wire and 1/16" aluminum tubing for the torque rod bearings and the control horns.
There must be a small weight savings vs using 2-56 threaded control wire...and once you get used to doing it this way there is much less hardware involved.
All this method has to do now is prove that it works without fail.....
Here is a look at the WEIGHT MANAGEMENT PROGRAM
220 MAH NIMH Battery... ...............1 1/8 oz
micro 4 ch RX ..... ..............1/8 oz
balloon tank....................................1/4 oz
50 sq inch wing with 5g servo..............1 3/8 oz
plywood fuselage w/ 5g elevator servo 2 1/2 oz....................5 3/8 ozs before 3 coats of dope and a coat of automotive urethane are applied.........
I could SWISS CHEESE the 1/32" plywood sides and recover maybe a 1/4 oz of dead weight...but some of that recovery would be given back with tissue patches.
I think putting the plane on weight loss surgery is something that could be done after I try flying this plane at let's say 5 3/4 ozs all shiny, pretty and RTF...

Re: COX .020 POWERED SPEEDSTER
Nice work, I like the adjustable-length aileron pushrod concept!
As a weight cut option you may want to try a 400mAh Lipo battery with a small DC to DC ramp up converter from 3.7 to 5 volts, and a Zepsus magnetic
micro-switch...the whole package stops at about 0.6 oz or so and brings extra power compared to a 220mAh NiMH battery.

Brad thanks very much for the effort you put into my education...!
There was an old German Dude at RCU known as "Der Steuermann" who spent a great deal of time getting me up to speed with the techniques and details that make a Euro Speed Cup Plane go fast.
"High Plains" at RCU was another guy who was also very generous with his time,,,he dated back to the Formula 500 days of RC Pylon that was flown at 170 mph
Joe Clause of KK and Dave Shadel of Performance Specialties were also mentors of mine who I never met in person. They just wanted to pass on what they knew to people they thought weren't a waste of their time [to be blunt about it]
Here is the plane that Der Steuermann painstakingly helped me build from his desk in Germany to mine....
This is a Nelson FAI 40 engine that uses zero percent nitro and it spins a 7x7 prop 30,000 rpm for flat and level speeds of 200 mph. While converting the weight of the model to higher speed during the allowed Speed Cup dive angle this plane recorded 205 MPH.
The cost of doing this just for fun was too much for me so I hung the model up in my attic about 20 years ago.

So I will guess that the conversion from 3,7 to 5 volts only de-rates the battery from 400MAH to about 300 MAH...which is plenty of power for doing a handful of flights....

Re: COX .020 POWERED SPEEDSTER
Correct, the beauty of the small DC to DC converter is its output Voltage is adjustable with a small screw, so if your servos run on 4.8 V or even less safely, the 400mAh on 3.7V level goes down to 310mAh on 4.8V level or so..my Shoestring micro racer powered by a COX TEE DEE 010 and running on elevator and aileron drains about 5% from the battery in each 10 minutes flight, so you are good and safe with such a setup for numerous flights before the battery needs recharging...I charge the 1cell LiPo from my starter box with a USB charger so I do not have to run to my car or home for some juice for my onboard battery

This is why I see the search results for variable outputs...there is a voltage selector switch. !

Thank you sharing Chuck I enjoy chiming in results for a worthy fellow speed enthusiast!
Note the advantage of ply and spruce sq. stock is a skinny low drag / weight tough ridged fuselage able to smack the ground at full throttle.
The other big advantage is power upgrades and top speeds.
If designed right there is no need to cheese out the fuselage. Would like to upgrade the design with carbon sheet / smaller carbon square stock.
All but the Lil Speedy is ply/spruce:

The only way I can make that much room in my loading plan is to leave the aileron servo and linkage hanging out in the wind.

Very little in the wind if done as shown with no chance of mech loss with aluminum tube getting loose.
Note elevator control horn tucked inline with the fuselage / no snag landings.
Note the Nano X has two servos for redundant control.

I think you are using a radio that allows you to dial back the travel volume so that you can get away with using short control horns. I'm not going to spend that sort of money on a more advanced Spektrum radio just to gain a couple MPH.
Otherwise my old FM equipment with the advanced programming features still works fine for my .40 powered stuff.

Well I had no idea a "full house" radio was that cheap...!
So I couldn't resist....
None of the listings I saw went into detail about what all the programming capabilities are, so I assume it's all standard features now.

Yessah, great happy to help.
The Flysky FS-T6 6CH is very similar in features and layout as my pricey 6ch Spektrum
Noted as a digital proportional system will allow you full command of the servo throws.
The radio will allow you to flip switch or dial in a bit of down flap with dual servos for landing projects with ease.

It's been so long since I flew 40 sized 3D with my old radio that I forgot how much fun it was to experiment with that feature inflight.
Many of the "Ugly Stick" type planes would have been much more fun with flaperons coupled to the elevator.

Re: COX .020 POWERED SPEEDSTER
Chuck do you have a TD .010, if so a computer radio will be a must have to pull off a 100+ mph speed project.
This plane truly was a treat to construct and fly, throttle control would really be the best bet during trim flights.
The minimal servo throws for 100 mph + TD .010 and TD .020 projects is very very small.
The ailerons are like 1.5mm either way for the TD .010 plane shown, elevator 1.75mm.
Took a few trim flight throw adjustments to tame it down, a screaming wild cat until trimmed.
Long tail moment to help this feather weight 63g RTF plane have stability in the wind.
Alternatively round the pole flying with landing gear, throttle and elevator control would be fun for
those with eye sight challenges or lesser flying skills. Could do a air boat or car with the TD .010.
DIY aluminum throttle sleeve
Steel sleeve with aluminum backplate
Serious RPM / Best Noted Peak 33,107 rpm
91 mph pitch speed @ 32K

Re: COX .020 POWERED SPEEDSTER
No .010 for me. I will Draw the line at .020.
I've got too many engines that haven't seen the light of day in the last several years that I need to get some use out of.
Of course I'll need to join the local club to run the bigger ones.
No doubt your .010 plane will be the most critical to get dialed in and to keep dialed in.
Taking notes would be the only way I could keep multiple critical models straight.
Somewhere I've read about taping the outboard end of the ailerons to be stationary to tame them.
One thing that's easy to overlook is lateral balancing planes.
Here's one I forgot to do that with....

Yes that was a good save Chuck!
Offset for prop torque is another needed trick, the speed props are smaller in dia, but the
extreme rpm does kick the left wing down in a heartbeat at launch.
Took 3 trim flights to hone in the .010 control throws with a tame 2.56x3 prop.

Took 3 trim flights to hone in the .010 control throws with a tame 2.56x3 prop.
To be honest I DIDN'T SAVE IT...!!!
It just saved itself while I watched..!
I hate the idea of using offset thrust...the best advice I ever read was to put in a tiny bit of right,,just to be sure you don't have a tiny bit of left.
I think the best medicine is to be ready for a torque roll to happen at launch and then just enjoy the rest of the flight.

Re: COX .020 POWERED SPEEDSTER
Another plane is born.....
This one ended up 5 1/4 ozs
I've got a 3.7v to 5v Lipo system on order that will reduce weight.
Another thing in the works is a smaller balloon tank...made from a small nitrile glove finger
Having a smaller loading plan should allow for a more compact fuselage.
I don't see why the next fuselage cant be made entirely out of 1/64" plywood too.
So while having coffee tomorrow I'll rework a couple 3 pitch props just in case this plane does well with the 2 pitch "trainer" prop.
I've looked everywhere for my Great Planes axle style prop balancer......except where it is hiding.

Re: COX .020 POWERED SPEEDSTER
Thanks for the look at your go fast stuff...!
I found some 1/3 AAA nimh cells to make a pack with...but LIFE packs under 300 ma are hard to find.
Now I just have to find the wall wart charger I set up for 15ma output.
That prop balancer you show looks just right...
