38-in. Jetco Rearwin Speedster
I remember seeing this kit advertised in the modelling magazines and various mail order flyers 40 years ago. To me, it seemed to be one of the prettiest aeroplanes ever made, this kit as well was a pretty site and was like a very good representation of it. At a time that vintage kits seem to be netting a premium on E-Bay, I managed to get this one for only $27 + $14 shipping. It arrived today from Ohio. The seller packed it very well and arrived without any damage that I sometimes see on packages not as well packed.
Even the decals are clear. It is obvious that this kit was stored indoors where air conditioned. Sometimes I have gotten old kits. You can see where they have been stored in the heat, like inside an attic, shed, or sustained some moisture damage like in a damp basement.
I am stoked, it is like I got this kit from a hobby shop in pristine condition.

Are you going Radio Control with it? I agree it’s quite a looker.

Re: 38-in. Jetco Rearwin Speedster
You're welcome, Kim and Ron. This one can if one chooses to make it a CL, and it would be a unique looker, but I'm planning on RC. I've got that earlier Medallion .049 and a late 1970's exhaust throttle kit (the one without SPI and with silicone muffler cover). Ron, your Medallion on the Baby Clown CL flew that with authority. It is an amazing engine, very capable on basically a Babe Bee single bypass SPI cylinder / piston set. With a dual bypass non-SPI muffled cylinder / piston throttle ring set, I have a very good suspicion it will still be a reasonably powerful engine, better than that of the reedies.

The Medallion on that Baby Clown had a #4 TD cylinder on it. Dual bypass with 4 boosters.
Though, I do think your Medallion setup will be more than enough to fly that Speedster.

Then that explains its exceptional performance, basically a Tee Dee with good suction feed of the Medallion.

It should be. The engine compartment is cavernous enough that even a Dragonfly could easily fit. At this elevation though, more power is desirable. Problem with half-A flight with the traditional reedies is overcoming the wind when it picks up.

I love the plans, a work of art in itself.
Stick built and authentic, it's been a long time since I put one of those together. Nice vintage box too, part of the experience.
Enjoy

$4,390 in 1937 is now $76,836.58 in today's money. Mainly the well to do afforded it then, about the same with general aviation today (but means you are buying a used plane, IMO). Those farmers pulling cars out of the mud with their tractors for $2 were getting in essence $35. That was fair but good money for them.

I have that kit also . There also was a Cub and a Cessna along the same line . Nice kits , good die cutting and super plans . A little over built for free flight but good for radio and control line . Maybe a dieselized Dragonfly .074 would work nice on this plane ?

Re: 38-in. Jetco Rearwin Speedster
Dragonfly was a .049 with exhaust throttle muffler. The .074 was the Queen Bee. Either would be suitable power. The .074 with its Tee Dee like performance would be a better choice with more power. I don't know if there would be any advantage to dieselizing either, at least to me it is a personal choice. Never Dieselized an engine, so can't comment.Mike1484 wrote:I have that kit also . A true throttled .09 or .10 Enya III or IV TV or older OS Max .10R/C cross scavenged would also be good power, as they throttle really well, poke around the sky on half throttle (like it was on a .049 reedie) then peddle to the metal to bring the bacon home or do some aerobatics. Plus, putting a 7" or 8" prop in front would put the air past the more draggy cabin, give it decent vertical performance, too.
I think a .09 or .10 Schneurle would be too much power (like putting a stronger .15 cross scavenge on it).

Just my preference , I would not mount that engine upright . The fuel residue will not be kind to the windshield and it will spoil the nice lines of the plane . I would invert the engine . Side mount might work also .

Re: 38-in. Jetco Rearwin Speedster
Mike, I only mentioned it as an option, but I'm thinking of a better engine to swing a larger propeller like an 8x3 or 8x4, 1964 OS Max .10R/C or 1965 Enya .09-III TV. Even with the Cox .074 mounted upright, its muffer redirects the spooge away from the windows, so might get some splatters on one side, but shouldn't be bad.Mike1484 wrote:Just my preference , I would not mount that engine upright . I had a Goldberg 1/2-A Skylane with a Cox .049 Golden Bee engine back in the latter 1970's, a Minnie Mambo and Cox .049 R/C Bee a little after, a Top Flite Schoolmaster powered by an unmuffled OS Max .10R/C not to mention other aircraft. Cleaning spooge from celluloid windows is not a big deal.

Shooting for Spring 2019.
Have you started at all yet on the 1988 Davey's Systems 40" Fly Baby build (the kit I gave you)?

Re: 38-in. Jetco Rearwin Speedster
Ha! You got me!
Yeah, so I gave that kit to my son. He was excited initially and then lost interest. So it resides in my unbuilt kit pile. It will get done eventually. Unless I croak quicker than anticipated.
While I am young enough I really want to finish my CL stuff, when older and less agile I want to do RC.
My current RC kits:
SIG Ryan STA 72” span .60 powered. (Had this since I was 18) Maxey Hester design
.40 powered Gee Bee Z with add on radial kit.
.40 powered Hobby town trainer (built)
SIG Hummer TD .049 powered (built) flown once crashed and rebuilt.
Flybaby
CL kits:
Veco Thunderbird
Midwest Magician (big one)
Goldberg Voodoo
Jetco Shark .15
Brodak Tananger
Ed Southwick Lark
Goldberg Shoestring
And more that I can’t recall at the moment.
So you see I have many irons in the fire. Not to mention my other Hobbies. Too many cars and motorcycles... need to thin down!

Re: 38-in. Jetco Rearwin Speedster
Yup, I know the feeling. As far as CL kits I got:
Built:
42" Sterling Ringmaster S-1 w/McCoy .35 Red Head
30" Sterling Ringmaster Jr. w/OS Max .15 FP-S
18" Gee Bee Z Ringmaster w/Gilbert .074 Thunderhead
Need finish:
30" OK Models Pilot Cessna 177 Cardinal - framed, needs covering and completion.
18” Sterling Beginner's P-47 Thunderbolt (for grandson, need painting)
18" Scientific Musciano built up F6F Hellcat w/OK Cub .059 reedie - started.
Unbuilt, future builds:
55” Brodak Profile FW-190
55” Brodak Profile Oriental
42" Sterling Profile Grumman F6F Hellcat
42” Berkeley Profile Interceptor
36" Sterling Profile Lockheed P38 Lightning
33" Midwest Profile Curtiss P-40 Warhawk
18" Sterling Beginner's Profile Grumman F6F Hellcat
18” Sterling Star Wars Profile X-Wing
18” Sterling Star Wars Profile Y-Wing
18” Pat King 1/4-A Sterling Profile .020 Peewee Ringmaster
18" Sterling Hornet Biplane
So, I've got my share of bucket list builds. Being active with the Salvation Army, weekly senior nursing home visitations, motorcycle ministry, their church, Clovis Community Band and home maintenance, I've got a full plate, too.
Once you get around to it, the Fly Baby ought to be quick building due to the quality of the kit die cutting and good wood. It could even be converted to glow easily, anything from a .049 reedy to .10 glow, good kick around sport plane.

Plan sheet A for Jetco Rearwin Speedster
Hello to all,
I recently found a broken kit of the Jetco Speedster. This did not have the "A" sheet plan. I've seen a partial photo of that plan, but maybe it wasn't included in all of the kits?? If anyone has the plan and would be willing to get it scanned, please let me know! Looks like it will be a great plane!
Jerry

ANOTHER ONE!!!...That I've got a kit of, but haven't started!
I've got the R/C Plan Sheet. Do you need a full scan or will a photo or partial scan from my printer work? I'm heading into town here in a bit and can run it by Staples...just don't know what they'll charge for a 1 to 1 copy.

Not your fault Fred, it gets confusing, I think the best way is to post a new thread and insert a link to reference the old. It gets more attention that way.
