Cox Engine of The Month
Early norvel/AME?
Early norvel/AME?
This little gem came into my possession tonite. It's a norvel but I'm not sure if it's an .049 or a .061. The venturi looks to be JB welded on.
Also came home with this Dumas Lil Tiger mouse racer, complete with TD .051 and TT needle valve. The planes pretty best up, I may use it to make patterns for a new model.

Re: Early norvel/AME?
Does it have a .8 or a 10 written on the other side? That's the cc measurement. Big Mig has 5 bypass ports inside and the AME has 2(or 3, I forget).
Not early, it's a Revlite model with a buggery looking head someone tapped for a standard plug. Use one of those Merlin drop-ins with a head clamp ring like we use in the Coxes once you get it running That's basically identical to the Norvel original. If there's no marking on it, you'll have to get the calipers out and see what the bore and stroke is. Wish I could tell you.

EDIT: Oh, that's a Galbreath head isn't it. Not a bad substitute. Also looks like it might have a Cox 128tpi NV in it, but hard to be sure.

Re: Early norvel/AME?
It looks like a mashup.
The thrust washer is turned, not cast, which puts it in with the earlier AAN models. The case is also early since it has the AMD Cyrillic lettering and is not drilled for a removable venturi. But, these cases were fitted with the silver or gold colored AAN cylinders, not the black large finned cylinders. I've never tried to fit a late model Big Mig cylinder to the earlier cases, but that looks to be the situation here.
The AME cylinders have 3 large oblong ports; the Big Mig's have 5 roundish ports as Rusty pointed out. I also agree with Rusty that it appears to have a Galbreath head. The plug seat should be tapered; IIRC, the NELSON plug is 11/32" and this head will not accept anything else. The tapered seat turbo plugs have a different diameter thread.

Re: Early norvel/AME?
This little guy was seized so I tore it down, here's what I found. The wrist pin is loose in the piston and has damaged the cylinder, it worked out far enough to catch in the intake port. Looks like a parts engine. That's okay, it was free and they're nice parts!

Re: Early norvel/AME?
Jim, I had this happen several times with the AME cylinders. Sometimes it can still work. Most of the damage is down low and I've restaked the wrist pin . The Big Mig wrist pin doesn't align with the intake porting like the AME does so this doesn't happen. Install the piston upside down and use some Mother's and lap the burr off of the cylinder using the skirt only of the piston. I had one engine of mine last two additional seasons doing so. Ken

Good score Jim,
The little Tiger Mouse would probably fly as is. Just check the bellcrank, leadouts and hinges and let 'er rip!

There's a crack forming behind the wing, but I'm going to hit it with some thin Cya and at least fly it once. It would be a shame not to. It has me thinking I'll do a Goodyear mouse for the Tee Dee speed contest.

JP: Is the wing ribbed and covered, or solid balsa. The plane has a nice look to it and I like your idea of using the plane to make patterns for a new model or models.
I hope the flight goes well.
