Re: Super Clown racing build
Alright, glueing is done and drying in the hangar. Would like to get wings covered and fillets done tomorrow morning. If I could also prime that would be great, and if primer is down I might as well shoot base color....

Re: Super Clown racing build
Here's a little detail on my wing tips. I went with laminated 1/8 balsa to accommodate my adjustable leadouts.
I did 1/8 lamination on the outboard side and made a well for the tip weight.

What is the filler that you are using (the white stuff?).
I like the leadout finishing. Did you make the adjuster yourself?
I appreciate everyone showing their builds and a picture paints a thousand words.

Ian,
Yes I built the adjustable leadouts myself, thank you. The filler is light weight spackel the same stuff you use to patch nail holes in the wall.

I've been wanting to pick up some of that type of lightweight spackling compound. Do you know if it's affected by iron-on covering? I have to fill an area in my Ace foam core.. and was wondering what to use. I'll be using low-temp covering on the wing.
Re: Super Clown racing build
I've ironed covering over it and never had any problems.

Thanks Jim. Your model looks great! I like the adj. lead-out guide and the way you did the bellcrank mount too. Are you going with the same strategy of Uni-flow tank plumbing for faster restarts?

Thsnks Roddie,
I'm going to build a pretty much identical tank to the one on the mongoose.

Re: Super Clown racing build
Jim, could you provide us with the rules to your racing event that this plane will be participating in? I would imagine that square inches is a deciding factor to the airframe chosen. I was wondering though in regards to the sheeted leading edge. Does the sheeting impact your rules? As far as leadouts are concerned, I'm assuming since you chose to use a adjustable slider that leadout placement is also not an issue ? Ken

Re: Super Clown racing build
Ken ,
I chose the Super Clown because I had a kit and needed to build a plane quickly. I got the ok for the lead outs and single wheel. I'm also trimming an inch off the back of the elevator. I don't want to be doing around 80mph with a barn door for an elevator.
I want to lobby for SSR airframe rules if we get good participation. So far there are only two of us purpose building planes and not just showing up wit an old ringmaster. If I don't get the ok for a SSR I will probably build a mustang eventually, thin airfoil and low square inches.

Re: Super Clown racing build
Jim, the reason I asked for the rules was to propose something similar over here. Were already struggling to find pilots and those that want to be involved. I only asked due to some of your modifications simply giving advantages to older designs. I'm also surprised at the allowance of Spectra or the likes of. I think that is terrific. I use it exclusively for combat and I really think it needs to be introduced into the rest of the events. That would be contested over here. Some of the guys are die hard to the way it was insisting that things are to the letter to level the playing field. I personally feel it's all a bunch of baloney because it really comes down to who's cheating within the rules. I would like to see something very similar with many airframe designs as you have listed due to many of us already owning these planes. It becomes a struggle for me to continuously find something I like, build it to the specs and go out and have a try at it. I would rather modify existing planes and fly them. Building for me has been becoming more of a chore than a hobby. Having fun with what I have is something I feel would be beneficial to where I'm at currently. We have Foxberg racing and Fox racing which is a bit different. I haven't particpated in the SSR racing here. I just have to many irons in the fire now. Thank you for posting the rules.

Re: Super Clown racing build
I just painted with duplicolor acrylic enamel. Hands down the worst paint I've ever used. The nozzle spit fuzzy droplets, I should have quit immediately but painted the whole thing. I will wet sand with 1000 tomorrow and see what it looks like.

Re: Super Clown racing build
I always soak it with thin CA after it's final sanding and shaping. It turns into rock solid cement that can no longer even be sanded so the high temp covering works fine on top of it too.roddie wrote:I've been wanting to pick up some of that type of lightweight spackling compound. Re: Super Clown racing build
It's pretty much done with the exception of a few tweaks here and there. It needs about an ounce of lead in the tail, the shutoff needs to be adjusted and so does the control horn. I need to make a bigger tank. If I want it to be pretty I will need to finish wet sanding the warts off and clear coat it. With lead in the tail it should be in the 27oz range. I had it out flying last Friday and saw 78.8mph so it's a hair faster than the mongoose. The duplicolor paint seems to be fuel proof. I will get some video Friday.

I saw this puppy fly Friday when I was down in Phoenix. It's a great plane. And it gets good flights in, once it's launched properly...

Re: Super Clown racing build
I am not surprised at the 1oz of tail weight. Mine took 3/4 oz and that was with a Fox .35
I am surprized it didn't need more although the brodak nose looks a little shorter than the PDQ. Then again you want it a little nose heavy I imagine.
Anyway, great job on the finish. Looks sleek!

Re: Super Clown racing build
Ron,
Thank you, I'm really happy with how the purple came out.
1oz of tail weight will still have me nose heavy by stunt standards. I want it a little sluggish since I will be flying in traffic.

It's not just a prop protector, it's a front brake! As soon as you're on the ground you give full down. My buddy Ed has one on his racer and it works pretty well.

That is looking really good Jim. Wow I like the purple colour.
That is really interesting to see your 'front brake". I have never seen this before.
Can't wait to see a video. I hope we can also see the brake in action.
