Cox Engine of The Month
Cleaning up my desk.
Cleaning up my desk.
Well, I was cleaning up my desk, which is in desperate need of cleaning, when I got to a box of parts. It was a Medallion .09 that I'd got cheap on eBay a few months ago. I disassembled the engine and threw it in some fuel to soak overnight, and then cleaned up all the parts. I dropped the circlip for the spray bar, and couldn't find it, so I put the parts in a little plastic box to await finding a new circlip. Well, I happened to find the circlip last month, but had too many projects at the time, so I threw the circlip in the box and shoved it to the back of my desk.
Fast forward to this evening, and here pops up the Medallion parts. Hmmm.... finish cleaning the desk, or put the Medallion back together. Which will it be, which will it be?
Needless to say, the cleaning will wait for tomorrow.

Nice engine Mark! I've been watching for one for my box o' engines. I thought it would be cool on a 3 channel top wing ship.

Re: Cleaning up my desk.
I love the looks of that engine, never seen one irl. How does that throttle work? It looks like a combination of exhaust restriction and a rotating spraybar. Kris, the front one with the muffler, is that an .049? I'd like to have a muffler like that. I have one of Roddies mufflers, but haven't flown a Tee Dee since I got it. Today would have been nice except I was involved with the Yak when I wasn't doing chores. I've got the flying and building itch bad right now.
I lay awake flying in my head all night last night. The night before, I lay awake gluing parts on the Yak, cutting parts for my speedster, building my Skyray, and putting together a Tach Race engine. Boy, I'm a mess aren't I. Thing is, if you took a picture of me in bed, I'd probably be smiling, and not even thinking about... well nevermind.
Sorry Mark, I'm a little punchy right now.

The front engine is a TD RC05. It has an .051 cylinder without SPI. The muffler is somewhat heavy and leaked oil/exhaust all around the cylinder as it didnt have a tight seal. The tab on the back of the carb body held the muffler from rotating. The next engine is the TD RC09. The last one has the trombone muffler on the Medallion with a rotating spraybar. I have never run one of these to see how well the throttle worked. When it warms up I should try it as I have the .049, .09, and the .15 with this throttle.

The .05RC is certainly on my list of engines to collect. Can't ever find them through. Same with one if the trombone style rc engines. Very nice set you've got there.

Thanks, Jason. I'm curious to know what position the spraybar orifice is in at idle and also full throttle. And it works in conjunction with the exhaust slider, right?Jason_WI wrote:...The last one has the trombone muffler on the Medallion with a rotating spraybar. If you look carefully you can see that I have sealed the muffler on mine. The stock one was vibrating a lot and ate away on the plastic tab. The fix was quite easy, one turn of aluminum foil from a soda can is attached with JB-weld inside the muffler. I have flow mine in a Yellow Jacket and the engine is not bad, but once I tried with a Norvel engine (1cc) there was simply no turning back...

Yes, they move together. I think the throttling is dominated by the exhaust restriction and the change in intake is there to adjust the fuel delivery and/or help with the fuel draw. On could disconnect the link for testing purposes, to see how much it helps I guess, but I haven't tried that.

Re: Cleaning up my desk.
Just remembered that I have put a bench run of 05RC on the tube. The TD-head was too high in terms of compression ratio (overheats) and I tried with the regular head (in the video). It then held full throttle better but ran a little rich/under-compressed below that. The best results I have had with a turbo head and a warm plug, OS P3.

Rusty, here're a couple of photos. I couldn't get a great picture of the spray bar, but hopefully you get the picture.
Throttle fully open. The muffler slide fully open and the two flats on the spraybar are perpendicular to the venturi.
Throttle fully closed. The muffler slide is fully covering the opening, and the spraybar has rotated approximately 45°forward.

I've not run the .09 yet, but when I ran my Medallion .049 with this setup I was extremely impressed. I'm pretty sure I remember it throttling down to just over 4K, and at full throttle it was mid to upper teens. I don't remember the exact high RPM, but I remember being impressed that the high to low ratio was about 4-1.
An experiment I've been thinking about trying is to just take the muffler collector off of a Medallion .049 with this setup and put it on a SureStart engine and see how well it throttles. Just another experiment on the growing list of things to try as time permits.
