PS. Engine049
One Question: If you believe my Venom is such a FAKE, then WHY would you ask that I pull it down and relist it with a reference to your "GENUINE Venom starting instructions for $19.99"??? Why would YOU that holds all the special authentic keys want to be connected in any way to a CLONE. FAKE, COPYCAT, LATHED PISTON, FRAUDULENT VENOM?????? Hmmmmm, now there's a question for you... again, peace, I'm over and out 049.

This would be like having a cone going up and down inside a

Down the bore (this was expensive 'rebuild' time on our RS Cosworths
Back in the day) probably interfering with any normal 'suck, push, bang, blow'
Action to draw in a charge or expel exhaust gases.
This is the point where I am going to admit to getting my gauge out this morning, then
I shall do the only appropriate thing and throw myself onto my sword......
Who'da imagined it (not me obviously) but yes the Tee Dee 051 piston IS tapered.
Good Bye

Vemom!!!!!
Boy, you people take the hobby of modeling seriously here. Makes a dumby like me feel bad about some of my post in the last few months. I thought the only thing "vemonious" about these small engines was when you got your finger whacked while tring to start one. Guess I was wrong again.

Re: Venom!!!!!
I think if the piston wasn't tapered inside of a tapered cylinder it wouldn't sufficiently pressurize the crankcase on the downstroke.
John, was the piston taper only near the top or was the whole skirt progressively wider from top to bottom. I think I'll be taking one of my old Tee Dees apart this evening. Between now and then, I hope to just leave my cares behind and go fly some circles.

I seem to have become increasingly more concerned with the details since bringing my hobby online. I do know more about "why" when my plane doesn't fly quite right, but I do get carried away. It's in my nature that I've always loved intricate details.MMT wrote:Boy, you people take the hobby of modeling seriously here. I have not noticed any apparent dumbness in any of your posts.

" If you believe my Venom is such a FAKE"
You are misinformed I only believe there is a 65-70% I just want proof its real.

I want everyone to get what their stuff is worth, if it is a real venom a $17 investment is a Real good idea to buy some instructions ,

At the end of the day I don't care what people do with the stuff I sell. I know I conduct the most honest business I can therefore I sleep well at night and honestly (I'm in it for the money TOO.

Re: Venom!!!!!
I had a look at the Venom piston drawing and, as far as I can tell, the Venom piston is not tapered, only the cylinder. However, the piston is thin-walled, therefore making it lighter. There is a reference to "max. taper allowed .0001" but again, you would not be able to measure that and I don't believe that meant the piston is designed with a taper.
Decades ago Cox experimented with a "real" tapered piston but it would be almost impossible for any of you to measure the taper. Most electronic calipers resolve only to 5/10,000" and the taper was 45/100,000" +/- 15/1,000,000".

Re: Venom!!!!!
It seems a tapered piston and cylinder would be really tight at TDC, then extremely loose at BDC, especially the skirt area.
When the crank throw would flip over to the beginning of the upstroke at bdc it would rattle the heck out of the skirt.

Re: Venom!!!!!
What Cox did was a douple taper at the tip of the piston, meaning a portion at the top had a bigger OD. There was no conical taper. See it more along the lines of a piston ring.
Re: Venom!!!!!
I've now gone though a couple of engines in my stash, and I don't have any .049 engines with a tapered piston, only tapered cylinders (the #4 ones). I don't have any Venom though, so I cannot comment on that.
The TD .051 however does actually seem to have a tapered piston with a larger bottom end compared to the crown. Never heard or seen any other engine makers do that, usually there is a relief at the lower end of the piston, if it runs in a parallel bore, or the piston is parallel while running in a tapered bore.

GermanBeez said that the piston on his space bug was tapered and other .049 pistons would not fit the cylinder.
Re: Venom!!!!!
I have the newer Space Bug Jr. And it is not tapered. Not sure about the older ones.

Any tapered pistons would have a bigger OD at the top and not the bottom.
To my knowledge Cox only made them once for the TD 049. But again, I seriously doubt that anyone from this forum can measure this. I have tapered cylinders here and my $250 calipers which resolve to .0005" can't measure this.
Re: Venom!!!!!
I simply tested how far I can push the pistons out through the top of the cylinder...
On tapered .049 cylinders I can push the piston all the way through, but on the .051 they will not go through all the way, indicating a larger bottom end on the piston compared to the top of it.
I don't have any space bug engines and might not have old enough TD .049 engines either, if this was changed from the very early ones...

Re: Venom!!!!!
"Hand feel" is the way to go when testing if a cylinder is tapered. However, it is strange that a piston would be bigger at the bottom. I am pretty sure that your engine does not have a (intentionally manufactured) tapered piston.
What I think is happening is that the cylinder is tapered and the piston is not. However, Cox specs were .0001 OD tolerance over the length of the piston and it happens to be that the + .0001 is at the bottom of the piston and the - .00040 at the top of the cylinder. When those extremes meet, they bind.
