Re: Cars, cars, and more cars
I remember those little Fiats from when I was in India. They were made under license and many were used as taxis

I thought you would enjoy seeing that little Fiat Lieven, so much more popular on the continent than over here. I owned a 1974 124 Sport that I bought new with the manual transmission that was a fantastic little car, cost then was around $3200. You could really fling that little rocket around.
Not mine, long gone but the same color.

I found the original invoice on this car. $3510
I have kept them on almost every car that I have ever owned in a loose leaf binder. Everything from Fords to BMW's, from MG Midgets to four door Buicks. Over a hundred in there.
First one, 1935 Ford two door, $5 bought with a friend. I was 14. Last one 2007 Nissan 350Z. A lot more than 14.

Indeed, Lieven. You must be referring to Mumbai, where Fiats are almost exclusively used as cabs. Oddly, theOVERLORD wrote:I remember those little Fiats from when I was in India. They were made under license and many were used as taxis
Oxford Ambassador(the backbone of the cab industry in India) is a rare sight in Mumbai.

Yes, I was a few times in India in the mid and late 80's and then there was only that on the road all over the country: the Fiat and the Morris Oxford (Ambassador). Except in Ladakh, where they had jeeps for the mountain roads.

I did enjoy that and I think that car needed a bit more than just TLC. I found among my books the owner's handbook of the 7th and last series of the model, the 1100R. It still has got a rusted paperclip with a note of parts the owner had replaced.
The 124 coupé was a great model and this series II looked better than the first one. I owned a 124 Spider in the 90's. A 1976 car from Califormia. Then, Fiat only produced them for the US market. The air pump and EGR had been removed. I still got the literature.

Re: Cars, cars, and more cars
Neat Lieven having that history.
I forgot, I bought my daughter a 1974 124 four door sedan. Very similar. I think I drove it more than she did. Stopped at a stop light heading to Washington DC I was rear ended by a lady that thought the accelerator was the brake. Knocked me into the car ahead of me, big chrome bumpered American Iron. He got out all huffy as asked "What got into you?" I pointed at the car behind and said "She did". He looked at my smashed grill and his undamaged Buick or whatever and drove off.

Wow Bob. That would definately be an interesting read to see your history of car purchases over the years. It is truly amazing.

Re: Cars, cars, and more cars
I refer to it frequently Chancey, interesting to see what I paid for cars years ago. That '67 Plymouth Sport Fury with the 383 at $3700, was 10 times the better car than the 82' Camero Z28 was at $13,000.
Remember when they used to glue the window stickers on, and if you wanted to keep them you had to carefully peel
them off. By 1995 when I bought the Volvo they were just attaching them by the edges.
One of the more interesting additions. MY wife's Uncles driving license.

Re: Cars, cars, and more cars
I was thinking something like this Lieven.
Picture of 1918 Boston. Tremont street, been there many times. My whole paternal family was from the area. Mom taught school in Boston right out of college not long after this picture was taken.
At the time uncle John was 18 and 6' 1". Last time I saw him in the 1970's he was driving a Chrysler Imperial and pushing my VW Bug in the snow to get it started. Over ran the rear bumper and smashed in the hood covering the engine. We beat it out somewhat, and we (wife and three kids) drove the 50 miles back to Tiverton Rhode Island in the snow.
No cell phone, no seatbelts, no covid, no government breathing down our necks, Gawd those were great times.

Re: Cars, cars, and more cars
That's a good looking 11B Légère and with nice extra's as polished aluminium indicator surrounds, the hood ornament and the wind deflectors. This should be a late 1952, 1953 or early 1954 model. A very strong car, little maintenance, stays flat on the road in corners and holds the road as no other 4 door car did.

Re: Cars, cars, and more cars
Yup, the Corvair was just a look-alike shot on #7. I always liked the clean design of it.
Mark keeps steering me to these little cars.
https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1955-nash-metropolitan-2/
but anymore my tastes run to something like this. Sold on Bring A Trailer for less then a new Honda Civic.
Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith
Can anyone say Arthur...........

Magnificant Silver Wraith. I've once driven the Bentley S1 which is in fact the same car. These motors run very smoothly and give an almost Citroen suspension feeling. The engine is up to the job and the car accelerates great. The Bentleys are allmost all automatics.
The Nash Metropolitan? Bof, for the same amount of money, can't you buy a proper Nash? I love the closed front wings like on this one:

Re: Cars, cars, and more cars
My Dad bought a new Nash Statesman in 1953 followed by several Ramblers after he retired. Mom drove a Willys. Perhaps where I got my penchant for different. Only common sense keeps me from buying that Rolls or something similar.
How about this for wings.............1954 Dodge concept by Ghia..............

Re: Cars, cars, and more cars
My first car. (One like it)
1956 Simca Aronde A90. Mine was blue. I nave no pictures of the original and I remember seeing it squashed by an excavator and loaded into a scrap-metal truck, so no chance of ever seeing it again.
It belonged to a British back-packer who boarded with us for a while. Dad stupidly went guarantor for his loan and ended up with the Simca when the back-packer did a runner. He drove it for a while until it was no longer fit for the road. I inherited it when I was about 14 to learn to drive on around the farm. I had some fun in that car. It was also the car that I started to hone my mechanical skills on. First engine rebuild I ever attempted, using all second hand donor parts from other cars/engines. It's a shame I never got a picture. All I have to remember it by is one hub cap that I kept.

Re: Cars, cars, and more cars
"Aronde" is an ancient French word for "hirondelle" meaning swallow. The swallow was part of the Simca logo. It was found on the hubcaps and also as a bonnet ornament as on Rod's picture. Our local Ford garage still has a P60 stored in the attic.

We did also have a P60 as a donor car. Dad used the "Rush" engine from the P60 to re-power the A90. The "Flash" engine from the A90 was notorious for breaking crankshafts.
I well remember the swallow symbol. I actually recall that Simca and Mopar had some connection. I remember this decal on the firewall of my Valiant SV1.
Chrysler in Australia released the Chrysler Centura in 1975, which was apparently a Simca which had a lengthened bonnet (hood) to fit the Aussie 245ci Hemi 6. Chrysler Aus even tested one fitted with a 318 V8 but the body couldn't cope.

Re: Cars, cars, and more cars
Saturday morning I was sipping my coffee and checking the Forum, when a low rumble caught my attention. Saw an older 911 cruising along the small road on the other side of the river. Then an old Valiant, an early ’70s Corolla, ’80s Bentley... Remembered that a vintage car club was having a picknick cruise, and apparently their route went right by my house.
Went out to the dock to see better and recognized a few familiar silhouettes from the contest Lieven posted lately. An Octavia, the Sunbeam whatwasit with the wings, a DKW, a P60... I was not in a perfect spot to get pictures, But still, here’s a few. The cell phone camera has a delay, and the gap between the shrubs was just about the length of a small European car, so some of them are slightly covered up, even though they were driving maybe 10mph (gravel road). How many can you recognize?
