Af/x cars!
Had the grandkids over tonight, the grandson is seven and is starting to get the trigger figured out on the controller. We usually run modern HO cars with the power supply turned way down, tonight we broke out the Aurora Af/x cars from 70's, it amazing how fast a well tuned car can run! Not as fast as the newer Tyco/Tommy cars, but light years ahead of the old Aurora Thunder Jets!
Re: Af/x cars!
Cool mark! I love the aluminum racing wheels. Fun times for sure.

Re: Af/x cars!
Here are some of mine, mostly magnatraction some are G-plus. The ones I didn't dig out are G-plus and Super G-plus.
I was really into this as a kid. I received my first set in 1980. They don't make cool toys like this anymore.

Re: Af/x cars!
nice! I like the Super G cars...come to think of it I guess I like all of them...kinda like airplanes!
I need to surf eBay for a Datsun! When I has going hot -n-heavy, I was into 'fray' cars heavily reworked t-jets, with no traction magets!

Re: Af/x cars!
So COOL Mark!!! 8) What are the "Thunder-Jet" Aurora's? Were they the ones with 3 gears on top of the chassis that you could see with the body removed? I'm not too up on slots... but have track and about a dozen cars in an original box out in the shed... (ok... I'm going out to look now...)
here's a pic of the box... inside I believe is most of the track... along with various cars I obtained years ago. I can't remember where this set came from... but I've had it for at least 20 years. Back around 1970 (I was 10 years old) I got a Tyco "Sebring" set. The cars had headlights! (a Chaparral and Porsche I think) The pick-up shoes were flimsy thin-brass tabs though... and as I remember; they required constant tweaking. I had no idea what a soldering iron even was back then. The wires eventually broke off.. (I think I tried gluing them back on!) The Aurora cars were slower... but they could take more abuse with their heavy copper "rail/spring" type pick-up shoes. The ones inside the box pictured.. are that type. If your curious about the cars... I'll bring the box in and open it up. (now I'm curious!)

Re: Af/x cars!
heck ya, opener up! Thunder jets aka t-jets were the second version Aurora intro'd in 61-62, and dominated the HO market till Tyco came out with faster cars, aurora countered with A f/x and the speed war was on! Fourtunitly when Aroura intro'd the Af/x thousands of T-jets were left in warehouse storage only to be rediscover!
Re: Af/x cars!
T-Jets are pretty, but it takes a steady trigger to keep them on the track!
I really want to find the Aurora track piece that integrates the track with regular HO train track. A train crossing if you will.
My son has been on an HO train kick for 3-4 years now and he is relentless about wanting to play with my slot cars. That's the problem with collecting as the cars are not play toys anymore. If he was less careless I would give in.

Re: Af/x cars!
only problem with the old train/car track crossing is that's its the early pin and clip track and there getting pricey.
I've got a ton of HO track and misc. ...make you a heck of a deal! lol!

Very nice Roddie, those dragsters sold for big bucks a while back. I had one once and totally trashed it.

Re: Af/x cars!
It's really great that you spent some time with your Grandson... introducing him to the slot cars!!! He will remember this all his life! I loved my Grampa.. and miss him.. as do my 2 Brothers. My Grampa (Gramps) and his Son (my Uncle) and my Dad used to fly Control line Stunt together in the early 1960's. My Grampa and Uncle used to race slot cars back then too. The Cox "Cuc" was my Grandfather's.
Re: Af/x cars!
Cox made some good quality slot cars. To bad it was towards the end of the fad.
I would love a Cox setup, but it would take up more space than I am willing to let go of.

Every time he comes over he wants to race, but not until the last year has his hand/eye coordination got him to the point where here can control the throttle, its pretty cool watching him go!
Dec 26th I slipped and fell on ice trying to throw a disc (disc golf) and messed up the MCL in both knees, at 55 i'm starting to revaluate my newest hobby...maybe I need to spend more time at the R/C field...or heaven forbid introduce the li'l twerp to the wonderful scream of a .049!
yep, I can't remember the name of that car, its Spanish...they also are highly sought after.

Re: Af/x cars!
Here's the "Cucaracha" pan as compared to a more modern "JK" pan.. The controller is an old MRC "Endura".
This body was to be a police car... can you guess what year/make car?
