Good one Roddie. Man, did they do that song justice!! Absolutely brilliant. As good (or better??) as the original.
The best part of the song, in my opinion, is that magical Hammond sound. I'm sure you'd agree Roddie, being a keys player.
Forget the building, just listen to the song.

This nearly evokes a tear, especially when I think of how I missed every opportunity to see them live.
I hope you have a big screen and a sound system to send this to.

lyricsfreak.com: Procol Harum – A Whiter Shade Of Pale Lyrics
Procol Harum wrote:We skipped the light fandango*
Turned cartwheels 'cross the floor
I was feeling kinda seasick
But the crowd called out for more
The room was humming harder
As the ceiling flew away
When we called out for another drink
And the waiter brought a tray
*(a lively Spanish or Spanish-American dance in triple time, performed by a man and woman playing castanets)
And so it was that later
As the miller* told his tale
That her face, at first just ghostly,
Turned a whiter shade of pale
*(a person who owns or operates a mill, especially a mill that grinds grain into flour)
She said, "There is no reason
And the truth is plain to see."
But I wandered through my playing cards
And they would not let her be
One of sixteen vestal virgins*
Who were leaving for the coast
And although my eyes were open wide
They might have just as well been closed
*(in ancient Rome) one of four, later six, virgins consecrated to Vesta and to the tending of the sacred fire on her altar. - IMO, the bust of a female on the front bow of a ship, indicating 16 sailing ships leaving port.)
And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face, at first just ghostly,
Turned a whiter shade of pale
She said, "I'm here on a shore leave,"
Though we were miles at sea.
I pointed out this detail
And forced her to agree,
Saying, "You must be the mermaid
Who took King Neptune for a ride. "
And she smiled at me so sweetly
That my anger straightway died.
And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face, at first just ghostly,
Turned a whiter shade of pale
If music be the food of love
Then laughter is it's queen
And likewise if behind is in front
Then dirt in truth is clean
My mouth by then like cardboard
Seemed to slip straight through my head
So we crash-dived straightway quickly
And attacked the ocean bed
And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face, at first just ghostly,
Turned a whiter shade of pale.
I've included a few definitions to help clarify. IMO, it is a sea tale about sailing ships leaving port, particularly one that was lost in the rough seas. (Miller's tale of grinding - ship taking a pounding by the waves of the sea, ship's vestal virgin on the bow becoming more afraid of her safety, final resting place of the ship sinking to the ocean bed.)
Anyway, that is my take on the lyrics.

Song was released on May 12, 1967. Seems that in concert, the last two verses were sung. it was originally released on a 45 RPM record, abbreviated may have to do with the capacity in length for release on this media.
Also, I found it interesting in discussion where a lawyer fan questioned the band's song writer about its meaning back some time ago, and in a rude manner the author evaded his question and would not divulge what the song really meant. As such, he left it up to the interpretations of the listeners, as to what it really meant. It has been interpreted as a relationship between a man and a particular woman, the band being smashed on drugs while performing live on stage, someone on a death spiral in a drug experience, and etc.
We may never know what was really intended by the author. I took a more literal interpretation. I saw it as the description of a sailing ship on its disastrous voyage in a relentless storm away from land.

Well, a miller grinding flour would probably end up with a lot of flour on their face, making it a "whiter shade of pale".

Yep, February 1988, Melbourne Tennis Centre, now Rod Laver Arena. The effects were unbelievable, groundbreaking lighting and sound. I remember the music just swirling around the auditorium making my head spin. No alcohol (or any other drugs) required. The music was intoxicating enough.
My aim is to see "The Pink Floyd Experience" on their next tour. Won't be as good as the original, but it's the best we're gonna get now.
By the way, IMHO, the solo on Comfortably Numb must rate up there with the greatest guitar solos of all time. I've gotta say, after watching the clip, I don't miss Roger Waters

The industrial age for milling came much earlier than supposed.Oldenginerod wrote:Well, a miller grinding flour would probably end up with a lot of flour on their face, making it a "whiter shade of pale". Am I thinking too literally?
art-and-flour.de: The History of Flour: from the Mortar to the Industrial Mill
The History of Flour wrote:This invention of the ancient world was used again by the millers of the Middle Ages, but in the twelfth century a new construction reached the European continent: the windmill, that probably originated in the Orient. It is not known whether the Crusaders brought the invention home with them from the Arabian world. All we can say for certain is that windmills were already turning in far-off England around the year 1150. Initially viewed with distrust, the new technology experienced its heyday in the Netherlands, where it contributed to growing prosperity towards the end of the Middle Ages. Until far into modern times the windmill was a characteristic feature of the European landscape.
That did not change until the start of the industrial age. In 1786 London’s first steam mill was erected on the bank of the Thames. Barges delivered the grain directly into the basement of the unimposing building. Inside the mill, two 50-horsepower steam engines together moved 20 pairs of millstones. The Albion Mill was so productive that it provoked the resentment of its competitors. After five years it went up in flames, accompanied by the derisive howling of the London mob. What initially met with little approval in England fell on fertile ground in America. There the inventor Oliver Evans constructed a steam engine that operated at higher pressure and was soon driving large automatic mills.

She is very talented, very pleasing to watch her musicianship in action.
This is an interesting rendition by a 12 YO (now 19 if math is correct) of an old Linda Ronstadt favorite.
Here's a nice Hendricks style guitar riff by Ana Popovick, Blast Furnace Blues:

thanks for the lyrics
I have been listening a lot to my Alexa Show in my shop and for every song, she runs the lyrics on screen...amazing how many songs I had no clue what they were singing....
this particular song evokes strong emotions from mt memories of high school dances and early rock concerts....never did see PF live....I was at one Monsters of rock in Germany where they played but I was long passed out by the time they took the stage

Your not alone Fred! And it's not just us old folks either. I remember my daughter in her pre-teen years telling me how much she loved Ed Zeppelin.
I love sub-titles.
I wonder how many of us got all the way through the 3:03 of Lanza's Pagliacci.
Archie Polliachi ........ My Mom loved Opera and listened to it on the radio constantly. I called it "screaming" at the time.

California Dreamin' had a HUGE influence on me; back decades ago.. from the first time I heard the song.. to even now. Something about it.. not sure what it is.. but it's haunting to me. A few years ago, I was playing with the "Jeff Mason Band".. and California Dreamin' was a song that we had learned.. and played for a few gigs. For "me".. that was epic.. because there was considerable talent in that band.. and particularly "vocal talent".
Regarding "A Whiter Shade of Pale".. that's another in the same class for me. Like "Rod" mentioned; the Hammond organ sound is awesome. That may have helped to lead me down the road to becoming a keyboard-player.. along with a few timeless tunes from Carlos Santana..

This was done 10 years ago, but very nicely done, better than Madonna, IMO, by Alizée, a young French singer.

Love that movie!
”Ma’am, what kind of music do you usually have? - Oh we got both kinds, country AND western”
”What are those damn freak peckerheads playing?”
”That ain’t no Hank Williams song”
”Sorry we couldn’t remember that ’Rackety old Ninety-seven’”
Legendary.
I know I go on and on about Nicki Bluhm, but I love her songs and can’t understand why she is not more popular. I like the kind of folk-influenced 70s style, and her voice...
Great wisdom in the lyrics too, ”ain’t no rainbow without a little rain”, exactly what I wrote on Facebook a few days before hearing this song the first time, after being caught in a downpour while test riding my son’s motorcycle, here’s the pic I attached then:
So it sort of struck a chord Another gem is ”what doesn’t kill you makes your story longer”. Got to love the attitude
In another thread there were discussion about music to listen to while building planes. I haven’t done a lot of building lately, but for doing other stuff at the shop, this is a nice one:

Roddie's is a live version of "A Whiter Shade of Pale" which is great. I somewhat have trouble with change especially when it comes to music. There are some re-makes that are great, however the memories associated with the original at times just can't be beat. Such as :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mb3iPP-tHdA
But then after viewing this, I was astonished at this performer's vocal display and individual interpretation. Even though short, I hope you'll enjoy:
