Re: Recent engine acquisitions
Thanks guys, behind the Yak you can see the makings of my future "expendables" fleet. I had bought some 2.5mm balsa to make wing ribs for another model but the sheets were so heavy and hard to cut that I decided to build some sheet wings out of it instead
The idea is to make 3 planes, as identical as possible, engines included, so that I can pack them all with me to the field and not have to stop flying until I crash the third time
The design of these is very basic, I took the main dimensions and "moments" from a proven design, and the silhouette is copied from the Scorpion I built a while ago. The sad fact is that I still haven't ever flown a C/L in my life, and since I am not exactly a kid anymore, I know it will take some time and crashes before I can take and fly a proper stunt plane (for more than half a lap anyway ).

Yes Mauricio...they still exist but I do not suppose their warranty is worth anything

Ok, I just bought two motors and accessories, I'll send this link to see if they take care of your problem.
I'm waiting for those engines, I hope I have no problems!

Ahhh Mauricio thst is an old story but thanks.
Kari sorry for derailing your thread..I encourage you to fly this beauty, I started my modeling hobby with CL planes as a kid and after learning the basics of takeoff and landing I could fly at least level within short. I am not sure though whether I could fly CL again without immediately rekitting it...I am a lazy RC flyer instead that takes much less physical drill than spinning with a fast CL plane

Thanks Mauricio
I did not have illusions with the credibility of this US NV engine distributor, but here is a part of my correspondence with a guy called Dimitry who in 2014 was manning their customer service (????) and did not provide any useful technical information nor gave me a real address for warranty repairs...
Anyway, I will never do business with them again and am happy with my COX engines, so will probably never experience the "NV Big Mig quality" others here were/are lucky to get...

In agreement András, I regret the bad experience that has lived, given the circumstances, I am waiting to receive my engines.
I hope to have "luck", or that what happened to you is an atypical and isolated case.
I understand that Norvel engines work very well, so I pray that this will happen with mine.

Finnish Space Bug Jr. restoration
"There were no gasket between the tank and the crankcase, not sure if there should be one."
Yes, there should be a paper gasket. Mfg. part # 314-J. It should not be all that critical to just make one out of kraft paper or maybe you can get away with just some RTV sealant.

Re: Recent engine acquisitions
Yay
The "Hot Rod Hopper" arrived!
It has a late-model #1 cylinder, Killer Bee crank and a Valentine-style spinner. Topped with a Tee Dee head. I think I'll find a thin-wall #1 cylinder for it to make it look a little more "period correct", but it is pretty cool as it is now.
As a bonus, there was also a nice long-beam Tatone mount, something I have wanted for a while.
Me happy

Hey KariFS very good engine, you do not want to build an RC model for him ?, that silindro I would put a regulation ring and manufacture r / c a moelo to enjoy it! Congratulations, friend!

Re: Recent engine acquisitions
Andras, I am pretty sure the needle valve assembly is interchangeable. I have an unused (NIP) Space Hopper carb assembly, I previously compared it to the NVA of a Tee Dee, looks the same externally but the tips of the needle valves were different.
See the pic below, the Space Hopper needle has a lot thinner tip, so probably the needle bodies are internally different. But, as I said they are interchangeable as units. Not sure if a SH unit would work well on Tee Dee or vice versa, the differences probably have some effect to fuel flow.
Mauricio, I think this engine will end up polished in the display cabinet I do have a dream that I would at least bench-run all my engines (maybe 50 of them total), building planes for all of them would be great, but not very realistic... This is my first Space Hopper, so I will be extra careful with it

46 y/o and never flew a ukie?
I would suggest starting with some sort of quick and dirty .15 to .19 powered plank wing trainer design from 1950's to 1960's. (maybe even with coroplast wing and spruce slab fuselage subbed for balsa, which I imagine is extremely expensive in Finland)
They are not as jumpy as 1/2As, have far more positive line tension and you can really dial the lap times down to reduce beginner's dizziness.

Re: Recent engine acquisitions
Tico, yes, guilty as charged
When I was a kid we moved around a lot, and only one of the towns had a model airplane club. During those two years I moved on from free-flighters (gliders and rubber power) to basic R/C and shortly after that it was time to move on again. I never got exposed to C/L, never even thought about it until about 4 years ago when I ran into my old Babe Bee and started dabbling with engines and model aviation again.
Spruce is certainly cheaper around here than balsa, but the price of balsa is not prohibitive. A 4x40 sheet of 3/8 balsa is around 5 or 6 euros. The reason I am building these little planes is that I have a bunch of beat-up but airworthy Babe Bees, but only one operational .15. Sort of want to preserve that, it’s an OS MAX from mid ’70s, not sure if it has ever run.
But I’ll get there, as Carole King would say, ”Eventually”

Re: Recent engine acquisitions
Just could not resist... here is JPVelo’s ex-Hopper. I took a thin-wall #1 cylinder and a standard crankshaft from a donor product engine, polished the case and added a NIP carb assembly that I had around. The spinner is not the correct one but will do for now. The hop-up parts I removed from this one will be used on some future performance build some day.
Not 100% correct but I like it.

Re: Recent engine acquisitions
Another box of treasures arrived yesterday
A fellow hobbyist donated (or rather wanted me to ”adopt”) his old engines. He wrote a letter that he considers this as a donation to a museum, rather have the engines end up to someone who appreciated them than to have them end up in scrap from his estate. Well, I sincerely do appreciate this donation, and I told him they will stay in my collection or use, never will they be sold. Nor will they be traded to anyone but another collector! Eventually they will be donated again of course, hopefully to another collector or a museum. I know most collectors appreciate NIB stuff, but I myself like used engines with the signs of life showing on them before I clean them up and put on display. All these engines have flown in various planes during the years from 1969 to 2004.
Here is the Cox stuff, there was a bunch of new and used parts included too:
Tee Dees .020, .049, .051 AND a .050 R/C! Two disassembled Dragonflies, a Pee Wee, Medallions in standard and R/C versions and a Babe Bee from 1969. Among the spares were a TeeDee back cover with a pressure outlet and a muffler that I had not seen before, any info as to what brand or from what era it is?
As a bonus, there were three G-Marks. Two .061s and a very Charming little one, .020 I think.
Anyone know the difference between ”glow heads” and ”grow heads” There were two of them in each box.
These will keep me busy for a while

You received a very nice assortment of engines, Kari, from your friend. He is correct, I've been seeing a lot of estate sale engines on E-Bay lately. Some are nice and go for next to nothing. Very few of the younger generation is into model airplanes these days. Those that are fly electrics.
I imagine that you'll probably not leave those Dragonflies unassembled for long. Those extended capacity tanks on them give a decent run length for half-A flying.
It looks like a Tatone muffler for Coxes of the 1970's, may be 1960's, sort of Calumet style.
As you probably are aware, the Japanese language lacks the "L". Converting English to Japanese syllable writing characters, they equivalence the "L" with "R". Apparently it was a mistranslation back into English alphabetic characters, then someone corrected them, hence the two different spellings.
Once in a while I have seen the same thing with Chinese. They have the "L" but not the "R". (I remember an English cartoon, may have been a US Stars and Stripes one from the 1950's. An English speaking patron tells the Oriental chef he wants, "Fried Rice." The chef is confused, thinking, "Flied Lice?", a swarm of flies. )
These will keep me busy for a while
You've got a nice cache of engines there. The nice thing about the Coxes is that at least most parts are still available, so the worn out ones can be rehabilitated back to life.

Re: Recent engine acquisitions
Thanks George. You are right, the first thing I am going to do is clean up and put the Dragonflies together. The better looking will end up to the collection (did not have one before these) and the other one will be a runner some day.
Thanks also for the info on the muffler, I think I’ll mount it on a Medallion and try to find a Tatone mount for it also. Again, this one will end up on display too. I am not much of a pilot so I’ll practice with ”expendable” stuff first
I was aware of the Chinese getting confused with R’s and L’s, did not realize it was similar for Japanese too, before I saw the box. Found it kinda funny, and wonder if there were a lot of boxes like this made and exported before someone caught it
BTW I did try to learn Chinese once but found it quite impossible, as (among other things) the changes in intonation change the meaning of the words, and some of the sounds that are required were physically impossible for me. I actually got spasms in my neck/throat area trying to pronounce some of the words. Fortunately most of my Chinese colleagues speak English, although some have a very thick accent that makes it almost a language of its own. Japanese might actually be easier to learn and might suit me better.
