English as a second language
This is a receipt from Dade Co. traffic court. Not long ago they were painting the word "school" in a cross walk in front of a school and spelled it wrong too.
This place is nuts!!

Re: English as a second language
I am not amused... and as a near 60 year old man who lived in over fifteen foreign countries and many of the United-- States it annoys me greatly how many of my fellow citizens are so fast to excuse the English as primary language as not progressive.
Or all the youth who are obviously NOT getting a PRIMARY education as our most precious resource...seriously...
BTW if you think my rant in the for sale thread was bogus, then get off your butt and read carefully all 5 posts from that so called 11 year old and tell me I am full of hooey
Much of the problem is apologetic and apathetic citizens

Good morning.
Not at all sure what prompted Fred von's rant.
Multi-lingualism is good within a country is or is it a negative influence?
"Progressive"? In whar sense?
Or is it a subject better left out of discussion on our forum?

Re: English as a second language
Reading......
I think that's the main problem. Kids do not read anymore. My daughter was an atrocious speller. I constantly pushed books down her throat and she is much better now. Kids that don't read spell phonetically as in how the word sounds in their head.
I am on the fence about the ESL subject. I don't think it's a bad thing to be able to speak more than one language. However, if I go to Europe I don't expect them to speak to me in English even though most Europeans can speak English fluently.
Just my thoughts.

Ron:
Our grandchildren, ages 11 through 16, are proficient readers and excellent students and are involved in all sorts of productive activities LARGELY because the ywere raised to be that way.
The critics of the efficacy of public education like paint the education picture with a very broad condemnation of CHILDREN and never mind parents who don't lead by example passing off their responsibilities to the public schools.
"I'm a TAXPAYER" I DEMAND results!" How often that lament is heard? To most people who have actually been involved in their children's education, proactivity in educational matters is a more common behavioral pattern.
Parenthood is much more than a biological fact. It's a RESPONSIBILTY understood by too few parents (note the plural).

Re: English as a second language
SD I can not find one thing to disagree with in your post. As much as I am profoundly disappointed with the public school system here in Texas, I am thoroughly disgusted with the sever LACK of parenting by my fellow citizens. Not a danged thing wrong with being Bilingual or Multilingual. That said, I truly believe that most of our angst about the "press one for English" is born out of the multitudes of non American citizens invading our country and actually demanding accommodation while openly celebrating their native heritage as primary. I am not anti immigration. In fact over the years I, as my father did, have sponsored several former Iron curtain families through the whole gauntlet of getting here and eventually becoming American citizens. This experience motivated me to learn more about American history and our Constitution. An endeavor I strongly recommend to all who live in this great country
