Bah I no longer have a firebird and am going to sell my throttle ring to MF dude.
So Matt.........
He he. I've also have a "skyfly" which is basically the same thing. It flew terrible.

Maybe a nice pee wee would fix it eh?microflitedude wrote:nitroairplane wrote:shell shock wrote:hmmm... DO IT!

Possibly. The main issue was it took nearly whole football field to turn around. Do they make Peewees with brass driveplates?

No they don't but I'm sure if you know a guy with a lathe he can make Ine jingle you very easily and quickly.
Maybe if younkers an adjustable engine mount it would be easier to turn?

Should be a spirited flyer then
Re: Shell Shocks First Cox Build
Ok, so this might sound a tad odd, but is there any way to slow the flight of an rc plane with no throttle? Like do bigger wings decrease flight speed? Im sure i read that a bigger prob gives more pull and less speed? Is there any truth to this?

Yes a larger lower pitched prop could be good or you could use an exhaust screen to restrict the power.

There are other thing like simply running it a little rich.

Re: Shell Shocks First Cox Build
When nitroairplane saw the title of this thread nitroairplane thought that shell shock was going to be like thunderbirdjunkie and like nitroairplane when he is thinking of thunderbirdjunkie.

There is a guy on RC universe called thunderbirdjunkie always talks in 3rd person he has over 20,000 posts all in third person.
I sometimes do that and i though from the title that you did too.
Re: Shell Shocks First Cox Build
Shell, another way to reduce airspeed is to put the prop on backwards. This tends to kill prop efficiency/thrust but still allows an optimum needle setting for a reliable run. Ken Willard used to suggest this for some of his early .010 planes. They were rudder only and needed to be trimmed out reasonably close just in order to complete a flight. The CG, incidence and engine thrust angles had to be set up. It was considered prudent to reduce thrust for at least the test flights.

Yes this was also recommended for the Page Boy it was at one time the worlds smallest rc plane with a reduced wingspan of only 8".
Re: Shell Shocks First Cox Build
oh wow! 8"? my elevators are longer then that! X)
I will definatly try the prop backwards. Also PICS!

Re: Shell Shocks First Cox Build
Well tell us how it flies when you get it out.
Also make sure you cover those wings with something e.g epoxy or the fuel will effect them.

Re: Shell Shocks First Cox Build
i got the plane all covered in fuel proof epoxy. still has a beautiful wood, but will eventually cover in yellow and black (calling it the hornet)

Re: Shell Shocks First Cox Build
^_^ danke. Ok, so before i finalize everything, what is this thrust angle (and incidence i think) that i hear every once in a while?

Awesome! Can't wait.
I hope your maiden will be better than mine.
Re: Shell Shocks First Cox Build
Can't wait.
Don't put a hot prop on it for the first flight, or either put it on backwards. That way if balance or something makes it too squirrelly to handle it'll be easier to hang on to until the gas runs out. First hand experience.
