Help Deciding on Kit
Hello everyone. I have had a Red Head McCoy sitting, doing nothing and my dad has a regular McCoy in the same boat. He said I can use his if mine does not run good (yet to test run it). His obviously was a runner in its day. Judging by the castor burnt onto it. I want to build a kit for one of these engines. My funds are rather limited so I checked with Black Hawk. I found two that I love the look of. The Giant King Pin and the Giant Stuntmaster. I am leaning more towards the King Pin as my engine will probably work better in it. Both kits are the same price. What do you guys think?
Rolla
P.S. I am looking for another stunt plane for when my Skyray finally gives out.

Woops, sorry. I forgot about the multiple sizes. The two McCoys I referred to are both .35.
Does anyone happen to know where a video is as well?

I bought a Red-Head" McCoy brand-new for IIRC $3.95 when they first were introducted. It was and excellent performer in my Veco "Chief" with a 54" wingspan. I flew in combo in AMA competitions and it lived a long life eventually being respectfully "retired" for rehab which never happened.
The McCoy "Read Head" .35 went on to serve in a "Miss Thriftway" hydroplane and eventully was traded off in a deal for a Torpedo .35.
In short, the McCoy .35 is a versitile, capable, reliable engine. Select whatever kit design that appeals to you most. The McCoy can handle it.

Re: Help Deciding on Kit
I must say Dave, you just gave me real confidence in my engine. Next to everywhere I look I read bad things about the McCoy engines. I read where one guy would buy a gallon of fuel and a McCoy engine every weekend. By the time Sunday rolled around, the engine barely had enough compression to run. He said occasionally you would get lucky and they would last multiple weekends. He swears he was not doing something wrong. He said he had many other engines that never had that issue.
My father's McCoy runs good and I figured he just got lucky. But with multiple success stories I think it is not as bad as it seems. I will definitely use the McCoy on one of these planes.

If an engine survives duty in a hydroplane what more need be said?
BTW, in the Veco "Cheif" the engine was mounted inverted in the fuse.

I have no experience with a Hydroplane. Is this one of those boats that skirts across the top of the water? If so I recall them bouncing around and giving everything on board a good shaking.

Yeah but those are both profile designs. Why do you like profiles?
Want some full-fuse .35 ideas?

I like profile because I am still learning (always will be) and it is easier to fix a profile than a full fuse (typically). The price also tends to be less (once again, typically). But I am all ears to any ides. I do have one full fuse I absolutely love. The Viking and and its little sibling The Vampire. I love the looks of both. I will probably end up purchasing one of them later in the year.

A hydroplane is a boat design that skims across top the water usually on three "points" and achieves high speeds. Full-sized hydroplanes are common across the country and include "classes" topped by the "unlimited" category.
In model form, much is the same. I have a caster-soaked 1/2A "Miss Thriftway" which some day I hope to duplicate. Essentially the engine in these boat run at very high RPM useing a marine prop. I ran my "hydros" RC and protected essential electronic components from "soakings" with rubber balloons.
Set up properly a model hydro is a lot of fun to operate.

If a connecting rod in a hydroplane motor survives, what more need be said. That thing is loading and unloading rapidly as the boat skips out and motor zings up, only to be hard loaded once it comes back down into the water and the prop bites.
The Conn rod on any Redhead motor is a serious chunk.
The Viking is a nice one Rolla, would be a good choice.

Ever considered a Shoestring or a Buster? Both still available from Sig and prices are real good.

Well I learned my CL skills on a full-sized S-3 PROFILE "Ringmster" so what can I say? Full fuse designs are probably best suited for the experienced CL flyer.
Full-fuses are definitely more expensive to build (and more heart-breaking to crash). But for those of us with lots of CL experience there is no equal to full-fuse. Once a pilot is proficient the most common cause of crashes is pilot error or careless preparation.
As mentioned previously my 54" span Veco .35/ Kenhi "Cougar" survives to this day never seriously damaged in a crash. It was last flown, IIRC, in 1978. Built in 1962 it was flown regionally in AMA competitions. The plane hangs, intact, in one of my grandson's bedrooms and everytime I visit I "flip" the prop over to prevent engine seizure.
But I'm being nostalgic again.

Re: Help Deciding on Kit
Ron: I have considered both but the Pin and the Master are both a little better within my budget. My dad has the original CG Buster. I flew the maiden. Tons of throws and an engine with crud in the fuel system. Full lean with 2 ounces. Could not have ended soon enough! It took all I had just to get it to go straight.
Dave: I love vintage style planes. That is why I zeroed in on these two (along with the price). Both of them look great. I think I will end up getting the Giant King Pin. It has a larger wing. Same size as my Skyray. Both have more wing area than the Skyray.

Help deciding on a kit
On the Black Hawk site, go to Finished Models, then scroll way down to British Giant King Pin. Click on that and there is a short (very) video and a couple of pictures of the model.

That is actually where I got that video that I linked to earlier. It is only 13 seconds long but it showed a bit of what it could do.

Both the Sig versions are .15 sized anyway. I must have been thinking the Goldberg versions. The Golberg versions are not affordable.....but I do know where to get them at a decent price.

I do not much care for the Sig version of the Buster. I prefer built up wing. I like Sig's new plane the Mini zilch.

When you learn CL with with a profile don't loose sight of the full-fuse designs for the future. Expensive yes but oh so thrilling to build and fly!

Dave,
Rolla has been flying CL for quite some time I believe. A lot longer than me anyway.

Re: Help Deciding on Kit
I started in October last year. I went from a trainer to a Combat Wing from Brodak. I learned most stunts on that thing. My first was a Lil Wizard with a RC Golden Bee.
Dave: I definitely will remember to build a full fuse CL model. I could do it from scratch as a winter build.

Yes a full fuse with an inverted, spinnered and cowled engine; there's no finer looking full fused ship.
Problem is nowaday you have hang a muffler on the blamed thing at some flying sites. Butt ugly, IMO!

Lol. I guess we are lucky. We own the property that we fly on. It is secluded in the woods. No muffler. No complaints as of yet.
