Guillows Cessna 150 build circa 1970 (Build Log)
I find myself once again stuck in a hotel. This time for 30+ days so......instead of frittering away my time I decided to do a build.
A trip to a local hobby shop netted me a 1970 designed Cessna 150 of Paul K. Guillows fame.
I have framed out the fuse and the power plant of choice is a .020 Pee Wee with a Cox Ryan mount so I can run an external tank. 2 or 3 channels.....not sure.
Pictures as soon as Indra uploads them I have no PC, only my phone.

Some kind of plastic like composite. It was provided in the kit for use with .020 power. Hope it works! Seems plenty strong.

yeah, in guillows kits they say the supplied firewall is not plywood but in some cases better than real plywood

Ok,
Here is the mock up, plenty left to do still. Not sure wether I want to go vertical or horizontal with the cylinder. Horizontal will be cleaner but it will barely extend out of the cowl.
Plug blanking tomorrow!

Negative good buddy..... I got caught up in the moment and was just enjoying the build. Tomorrow I will get serious and cut out and fill the control surfaces.
Good eye!

Day 3!
Plug blanking a la Kim Stricker style. Took me most of the day to do this and modify the cowl.
Tip for those who have never done a guillows mod, the cowls are very flimsy and will split easily! If you need to modify it make a pin hole and slowly enlarge to hole with sandpaper wrapped around a dowel or cylindrical tool. Anything else and you will surely be buying a replacement cowl.
Hopefully I will make moveable control surfaces tonight.

That is looking really good! I am suddenly feeling my first urge to but an .020 for a project like yours. I am anxiously awaiting the flight report and hopefully videos.

How does one "plug blank" or what ever have you a model? The better question is, how do you get yours looking so nice? Is it just trial and error, or is there some way to get the right sizes for the lil rectangles? Other then that, WOW LOOKIN GOOD MAN!

Well,
Basically you fill the blanks with plugs, not sure if it's called plug blanking or not. Anyway it does take some time, I used 1/8 balsa sheet and cut a piece to roughly the right size by eyeballing it then I sand it down till it fits snug in the blank. Don't push the plugs flush with the stringers you need to have them raised up some so you can sand it to shape.
It's a tip I learned from Kim and it really strengthens the forward area of the fuselage nicely.

Thanks Bob,
.020's abound on Ebay, if you can't find one give me a shout. It really is fun to do these small builds as there is a lot of fabricating to make things work. It's a great way to spend your spare time.
I have yet to fly my Guillows Spitfire as I was too afraid it was more than my skill level would allow. I figured a nice slow tricycle geared high wing would help me work up to it. I will be sure to post a vid or two and give a flight report.

Thanks for that advice! Im with yah, I have my p-51 almost done, but I'm a tad afraid to take it out with my skill level. I might actually take after you and build a High wing first!

I love those kits. I would like to find something like it for control line.

looking good Ron, i was just thinking about your comment on the flimzy guillows cowls, could you do all the trimming for the motor and etc... and then line the inside of the cowl with light weight fiberglass cloth and epoxy resin? should make for a pretty darn tough cowl that should last longer.
p.s. the fiberglass gcloth i have is 1 yard and weighs 3/4 of an ounce
