cox tee dee 010 pulling a Roaring 20 I have reconstructed after the previous one was lost
Hi there,
Just in case you are interested in how COX stuff flies in Eastern Europe (the same as it does accross the big pond, anyway...) I have uploaded 2 videos on youtube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HyXYuogiKLE&feature=youtu.be and at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1k8YTLegTo&feature=youtu.be shot on a Samsung smartphone (sorry for the unedited quality).
This is my 2nd Roaring 20 Early RC model that I have reconstructed from the original plans after my first one was lost due to a loose radio receiver power cable...never recovered from the swamp behind the airfield in the outskirts of Budapest, Hungary..my heart was bleeding especially for the Tee Dee 010 that powered the lost one, having performed 50+ flight hours with original compression and balljoint clearence in the engine...nevertheless I have several new Tee Dee 010-s I purchased on ebay so it took me no time to remake the lost one in less than 2 days (after returning from the office and smearing CA glue on the kitchen table that my wife will perhaps someday forgive me....) and this new Tee Dee 010 is just the same sort of micro-devil with lots of power despite the decades it has been waiting for me on the shelf of a US ebayer...boy, ain't it fun??????? .

Excellent vid B.
What size tank do you have there and what fuel are you running it on?
It seems like a VERY happy engine.
Loving the fact you've got a Summer, we had ours on the 27th of March..........................

Thanks for the rewarding words on the video, my old lady will appreciate them.
In fact I have a 2-way rubber balloon tank that holds 20-25 cu cm fuel without getting pressurized thus the fule supply remains balanced all through the flight...see more here:http://www.micro-flite.com/page47.html
I blend the fuel to contain 50% methanol + 25% castor + 25% nitro..I tached 27000+ rpm on the Te Dee010 and this fuel will help the engine survive 50+ hours without any noticable wear on it...

Re: cox tee dee 010 pulling a Roaring 20 I have reconstructed after the previous one was lost
I returned to my 2012 post on my Roaring 20 that, since then, has soaked so much castor in its intense use that its empty weight has grown to 240 grams i.e. 8 ounces. While the TD 010 could still keep it airborne, it was really a distress for the engine so I decided to help in any way I can.
I removed the old Oracover from the fuselage and wings to see which parts I can recover from this beautiful lil bird...the fuse was soaking wet in castor and practically as soft as cardboard paper, so I decided to rebuild it based on the plans I received when bought the kit from Selecthobbies some 7-8 years ago.
The wing, stabilizer and rudder could be cleaned, sanded and covered again, but this time in very light, transparent white Oracover.
It took around 2 days to rebuild it, and here it is...some decoration is still missing, but the dry weight is just a tad more than 6 ounces, i.e. 189 grams..when fueled, it will stay below 200 grams:
This time I built the firewall to accommodate the TD 010 and TD020 as well. I also fuel-proofed the naked fuse and the center of the wings before covering them, using a spray varnish that auto parts shops sell for the protection of aluminum wheel rings. I tried this varnish on a few of my recent planes and it seems to resist fresh fuel as well as castor.
Weather permitting, I will soon maiden it and post a vid.
It will fly on 2 channels (rudder and elevator) but later I may add a PET throttle I got from the late and great Roger Freiheit who had passionately developed this unique 010 throttle.

Balogh well done on the new plane we look forward to
seeing you new one fly just as good or better than the other one. For sure will be nice treat

X2...........It's probably more than a few of us that have lost planes/engines due to fly a ways etc.. Mine is sitting somewhere in the woods of New Hampshire.
Enjoyed your videos.

Thanks Bob..I lost at least 2 incl. the said Roaring 20, and a Lil Roughneck powered by one of my first 051 (!!) reedies from 40 years back (thus leaving me with a particular pain) because of electrical failure..maybe 2 others powered by 049/051 TeeDee-s because I flew them over tall trees and inadvertantly lost sight of them...my stupidity...woods and bushy lands around Budapest are among the largest non-US graveyards for COX engines...

Roaring 20 with COX TD010 flight vid
As posted above, my many years old Roaring 20 balsa airplane underwent a major overhaul, and with late winter weather permitting, I took it to its maiden flight to the outskirt of Budapest.
Fuel is home-blend 20% castor + 30% nitro + 50% methanol of which the plane carries 1/3 oz in a rubber balloon tank for a 7 minutes engine run.. I have a 2-channel setup with elevator and rudder control.
While the Roaring 20 was originally designed for COX 020 size engines like the PeeWee or TD 020, this half-size COX TeeDee 010 pulls it with authority and is even powerful enough to spur this 189 grams (6,3 oz), 21" wingspan mini-monster airplane into loops, see at 5:52 and 6:05..
Here is the video I shot with my head-mounted Sony cam on a unusually mild February Sunday, yesterday, in the outskirt of Budapest...

Thank you Brad I already had cold turkey in lack of flying for so long ...I am not sure why my 010 stays below 27k even if 30% nitro is in the fuel..my 2012 vids shot on hot summer days had my TD010 screaming at 27k on the ground and unloading near 29k in the air...is it the colder and (~10%) thicker winter air that brakes the prop and overcools the engine?

Re: cox tee dee 010 pulling a Roaring 20 I have reconstructed after the previous one was lost
Yes exactly the dense compacted air molecules are slowing down the plane
and prop. I have flown my .010 projects in weather as low as 52F with quite
a dramatic loss in performance vs a 85F day. The engine in flight cools too
much the fuel burn is reduced / power is down. Trick is to lean it up as much
as possible on the ground to compensate for the extra cooling moving at speed.
There is another trick if you ran performance outrigger hydros you learn fast
the engine performance is better on cold days with no cooling fins on the glow
head so the glow plug stays hotter. If you can cover up the fuel tank it helps
keep the cold dense / thicker fuel more fluid. So you could make a hotter plug
for winter flying by reducing the cooling fins. Another trick is nitro reduction
to 20% as menthol burns hotter. Last effort is a cowled engine in the winter.

Thanks Brad for a bunch of good advice...I will probably try with the glow head put in a cap...I would prefer not to lean out the fuel/air mix as this may cause a wear damage?

András I like how the model goes !! great friend! .... I kept thinking about the loss you say of some of them! ... that's hard friend !.
I ask myself if there where you live does not have other colleagues and thus achieve maybe prepare a place for them to enjoy the flights.

Re: cox tee dee 010 pulling a Roaring 20 I have reconstructed after the previous one was lost
Thank you, Mauricio.
In my 20km radius neighborhood I am the only nitro flyer, there were a few electric flyers and heli-flyers in my area but they did not mingle with noisy-smelly nitro burners like myself. They migrated to other places authorized for electric flyers only because of the vicinity of living quarters there. They moved also, because where I still fly and shoot the vids, drone flying is not officially authorized or, at least nobody has ever applied for drone flying authorization. Every unmanned aircraft - drone as generalized by lawmakers here - weighing more than 8.3 oz or 250 grams requires, under Hungarian aviation law, an authorized airfield to fly. This is understandable of course, for the security of military or commercial airports with regular traffic. (Such airports are not in the 15km vicinity of "my" field, so I do not impose any danger on commercial or military air traffic).
I have reasons to believe a tough legislation was enacted because Hungarian tabloid media started to fly drones over the property of wealthy (and crooked) politicians and crooked (but influential) celebrities to peek into their privacy, and it finally blew the fuses...there has never been any commercial or military aircraft in jeopardy because of drones flown in Hungary, at least until recently.
This January I applied for the membership of Budapest Aeromodelers just in case I will be ousted from the present, unauthorized field and compelled to fly at a remote but authorized airfield located some 30 km-s away used by other model flyers with memberships and 3rd party liability insurances that come as granted with the membership.
To tell you the truth I prefer being a loner and fly alone, not having to adapt to the needs and schedules and noise sensitivity of others.

the social is certainly a topic ... a club brings people together, but not necessarily unites them, in the same club these people, not all feel the same for the activity, many only go because they are entertained with social and conversations that has nothing to do with the activity ... in my case, I have many friends throughout my country, there was a time when many clubs could go, today, my work and my schedules do not happen.
I now have other schedules with respect to the majority, but that does at the same time, that I can enjoy fully and with the senerity that I need to feel good. I enjoy the social, but lately I enjoy much more the connection of my hobby with the nature of my environment ... peace and well-being ... it's priceless!

Thank you happy to help!
If you are using 20% castor oil the little engine will do just fine.
Lean as possible is holding the engine level and tuning to peak rpm,
then hold the nose up if it starts to cough and sag you are there.
Soon as you throw it in that cold air it will thermally be corrected
suitable for the NV setting.
It's how I set a record speed of 130.4 mph with my TD .010 Nano
about 76F and breezy day in May. Prop 2.56 x 4N / 30% Nitro:
See vid note I peaked it to the hilt with a 4 pitched prop engine is
not screaming it's butt off because of the high pitch for a TD .010
as we know stock pitch nothing compared to 4P. Notice the engine
cooled a bit after launch it was continuous running at full throttle
that helped keep it warmed up enough. Of course down wind passes
helped to speed up the plane too.
See video of the engine start up procedure / notice no nose up checks
After learning what to do with the DART .09 I now know the TD .010 in
the vid on start up was maxed out / peaked with that 4N pitched prop.
DART max prop pitch, less rpm too at launch but lots of bite with a
APC 5.25x6.25E / 144 mph best pass at 21.96K
A DART .15 will be able to handle a 6x8N / 160 mph is possible
unloaded to 22K
Published on May 7, 2016
Prop 2.56 x 4N / 30% Nitro:
Static 28,858 rpm / 109.3 mph / .028hp / 21w / 1.5oz thrust
Unloaded best pass per prop calc 133mph audio tach / 130.4 mph per Doppler reading
and best pass on this vid @ 4:10 / 35,184 rpm / 3oz RTF / 2ch RC micro race plane.

Re: cox tee dee 010 pulling a Roaring 20 I have reconstructed after the previous one was lost
Yes I hear you Mauricio and Bob and agree that having yourselves in a team or club staffed with people of similar addiction may add to the fun...but COX engines are so much non-traditional here that what these lil critters would (and actually did) trigger among other nitro freaks is probably a truckload of doubts (will this thing really fly??? why the heck is it so loud? and greasy????) and angst because of its high-pitched noise that would suppress their muffled 10+cc high-end engines too. And the electric flyers is quite a different bunch...not so much into IC engines and enjoying the hobby much less to its depths of bruised and greasy fingers and half-deaf ears...
Anyway, it is what it is...as things go these days with IC engine based aero-modeling getting scarcer by the day around the world and even more so in my area, I do not think I or others will fundamentally change for the better in my remaining years.
Had I been born in the US where COX was the mainstream buzzword of aeromodeling back in the day, I would love to join you guys in your clubs (and I would love to do so even without having been born there, to tell the truth..hence my visit paid to SIG Skyray when I was in Florida...who BTW last posted almost 3 years ago...)
