Cox Engine of The Month
Reed me.........Please
Reed me.........Please
One of my Cox chainsaws is missing a reed. It might has well be both as it won't run with just one. I thought someone here with the manual dexterity that I no longer have might be able to make me one out of a floppy disk or some other material? If someone is up to it, I'm sure I have an engine of your liking to trade for services.
Doesn't look to be easy.........Sorry, I can't find either my calipers or my micrometer. Thickness is the same as what you would find in a Babe Bee. Perhaps a shade thicker.
It goes in this little jewel.

Hi Bob, I’ll give a shot…..I think I have some floppy disk material… We’ll have check to see if it will stand up to gasoline…. Good photos and alignments

If not.. it seems to me that I've seen parts of electrical switches (or circuit breakers?) that use thin annealed copper contacts that might be large enough to make one..
Re: Reed me.........Please
Old relays and contactors have some interesting material in them Roddie…. Will keep that in mind

Re: Reed me.........Please
There is a ”proper”, or should I say ”bespoke” material available for making reed valves:
https://www.puchshop.de/en-gb/malossi-membrane-sheets-carbonit.html?gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAAD02mw3P-4b5nARi-XQDwcZ8hYDFO&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIqfin-o7XiAMVAEGRBR0R0xmiEAQYAyABEgK9o_D_BwE
The link is to a moped tuning shop in Europe, but most likely these are available in the USA too.

Re: Reed me.........Please
I suspect floppy disk material is too thin for a reed that size. This wouldn't be annealed copper, but spring temper beryllium copper.

Re: Reed me.........Please
I made a brass one first to use as a pattern ….Then traced it out on to floppy disc material…. The floppy disc is .004” thick so yes, Maybe a little thin but worth a try…. I’ll make a couple more then send them to you…. I’ll hang on to the pattern in case the size needs to be tweaked or we need to find a better material….
