The other evening I was having a bite to eat and needed something to look at for a few minutes while I chowed down.  So I decided to check out the classifieds on RCG, even though I wasn’t really looking to spend money at this time.  But an ad for some TDs and accessories caught my eye.  Now, normally, when I see a good deal, someone else has already jumped on it.  But I was the first to reply so I got it.  The ad was for:

2 Cox TD .049 engines
1 Cox TD .051 engine
1 Spare Cox TD High Compression Glow Head - New in Package
1 Spare Cox TD Needle
1 ACE R/C High Performance Needle Valve - New in Package
1 Kamtechnik Backplate Radial Mount for TD .049/.051
3 Spare Mecoa Black Plastic Venturi Mounts
3 Cox engine wrenches

The asking price was $100.00 shipped.  Naturally I wanted it.  The pic showed the above, but I noticed that not only was there a NIP ACE R/C fine needle valve, but one of the TD .049s also had an ACE R/C fine needle valve already installed.  Better and better.  All three engines were well oiled and in individual bags, ready to go.  I haven’t checked the glow heads, but if one or more aren’t good, I’m still happy.

When I went to PayPal him, it said that he’d be charged a fee for ‘Goods and Services’.  I’ve never sold anything through PayPal and I don’t know how much is tacked on, so I sent $105 instead of $100.  When he got the PayPal, he thanked me for helping with the fees and said he’d add a couple of extras.  Very nice of him.  I figured he’d throw in a prop or two.  He did slightly more than that:

Props there were.  Two new Cox three blade props, left and right hand.  Two Cox grey 5x3 competition props, one new and one slightly used.  Two new Cox 6x3s.  And two used Tornado props, a 5x4 and a 5 ½ x 3.

Also, two Babe Bee crankcase and piston/cylinders, oiled and in baggies.  Two late model product engine backplates.  Two throttle rings.  A Charlie’s RC Goodies .049 glow plug adapter head.  An .049 turbo plug adapter! And a Diesel glow head adapter.  I am not familiar with the turbo plug adapter, maybe someone could tell me who’s it is.

A Norvel tank mount and some prop nuts and spinners.

And this very interesting purple anodized aluminum engine mount.  Very well machined.  It looks like it’s designed for a used film canister for the fuel tank.  This somehow tickles a memory, but I don’t quite remember the details. I can't quite figure out why the upper right screw hole is dished in, though.

All in all, a fantastic bargain for $105.00 shipped.

Hello batjac
Great buy. on that purple engine mount I have a new one in the bag. but mine is the flat mount version. all you need to make yours work is a 35mm film bottle to snap onto the back of it. some fuel line with a clunker  let me see if I can get a photo up here of it.this model is for the fuel tanked cox engine.

Its basically a huge stunt tank extender.

Congrats on the good catch, Mark. Looks like someone wanted to do a quick sale not interested in gouging and you really benefitted. I believe that when the maker was still selling these, that he based it on using 35mm Fuji-film canisters (verify needed). The upper screw recess was to clear the Norvel .049/.061 Big Mig muffler, I think. It has the filler and vent tubes in place, just needs the fill tubing at the bottom. That and some flex fuel line and clunk, you have the makings of an R/C stunt tank.

Whatever you do, DO NOT USE the film canister that comes with it. In very short time it fails. It's not the fuel that does it. They split lengthwise and this can ruin your plane if full bodied. I've had it happen twice. I no longer use the stock version. Black 35 mm canisters don't fit tight enough so I search out the clear whitish versions. JK made r/c ARF's that were used for 1/2A rc combat and the mounts were made for those planes. The made a Mustang and Corsair not too mention a few others. I have two of the versions for Cox horseshoe backplates.

That is a great score, and I too really like the purple engine mount. Looks very well made, and well, very pretty too....

Congratulations Mark! You can never have too many propellers.. and those 5-40 spinner nuts are great for when you need to press a crankshaft out of a Bee's case. Do the throttle-rings fit the cylinders on the the reedies?

I recall those machined mounts for film canister tanks being advertised in 'Flying Models' back in the mid to late 90s IIRC...wish I'd bought a couple now .......in these digital days of course even film canisters are an endangered species.....

I reflect now-literally 50 years on-my first R/C model-a David Boddington 'Tyro' powered by an OS Max-10 R/C used an Ilford film canister for the tank-these were drawn aluminium, with a screw on lid-and I simply araldited the lid and feed/vent tubes in place.....it never failed in use .....the plan showed a clunk tank-but these were very thin on the ground in NZ in those days-and the few you could buy were way too big for that model....so necessity was the mother of invention.....which I imagine was also the case with the film canister tank mount...

Not sure. Haven't looked into it that much. Been feeling a little woozy this week so I haven't been doing much modelling.
