Help! Cleaning Chromed Plastic?

Post  transbian Fri Nov 25, 2022 3:36 pm

I'm considering buying a Wen-Mac P-63 and while the chrome is in good shape, it's quite dirty. I'm unsure if it's just dirt or fuel as well, but the only thing I've found that removes fuel is rubbing alcohol and I'm really worried about it removing the chrome or ruining the shine. Does anyone have experience with these? What chemicals can be used without damaging anything? I couldn't find any threads on this specific topic, but sorry if this is a repeat.

If it's just dirty, a mild dish soap and warm water will clean it.  Microfibre towels help.  Fuel, remove the cowl and soak it.  70% alcohol used carefully and tried on a small spot first.  Use no solvents or abrasives.  If any yellow is showing, it's down to base plastic and nothing will help.

Alternative. Find a cheap junker with a good body, disassemble completely, spray with Easy-Off oven cleaner removing all the finish and respray with a good quality chrome/aluminum rattle can finish. Remove and rebuild the engine. These can turn out beautiful. Fun and rewarding.

Good luck.

I have used Dove dish soap for dishes - that has the part that cuts grease.
It's the one where you see in the commercial, they do one drop of it in greasy water and the grease disappears.

And of course, warm water which helps soften up the crud. Not cool water.

Just watch out if there are decals on the parts as they will deteriorate from the washing.
