Fred, my friend,
Just lost an entire page long reply to you, when trying to do a spell check on this damn laptop with Win 10! I'm about ready to push this thing out the window, and get my old Dell fixed!
Anyway, Steve said it much better (and in far fewer words) than I could!
No doubt in my mind, that you are strong enough to deny those base urges!
Best wishes beating the Devil! You have done that often enough, right?
Bill

If you get that desperate, send it to me I worked on dells for years. I started buying Lenovo which is about the same, but now using iPad and MacBook Air. The air weighs about the same as the 14inch iPad and only has a 256GB SSD, but my daughter needed money and I am happy except for the “n” key sometimes.
smooth_bill: I live down the coast if you are serious. Probably just needs an update and TURN OFF spell check.
And Phred get well soon, I sent a PM, but you probably couldn’t read it at the time. Offer still stands. I found parts for a Dell Inspiron 5000 and screen today. Not the same exact model. Dell made many in-between models with the same top number.
I love to fly. I am getting older, USA

Hi Fred I know it must be different than giving up smoking but at least I managed quitting that thing. No promises made or placebo addiction substituted. I just did it. With you having the determination to save important things in life - let alone health - I am positive you will make it. I wish you quick success friend.

Re: Fred Von Gortler update.
Fred,
Congratulations my friend!!
Anyone who has not been there, doesn't know what you are going through!
You are proving that you are much stronger than alcohol and the devil it serves!
Getting rid of all the temptations around the house is also a great idea (bless your wonderful wife)! Unfortunately, you may have to distance yourself from the friends who like to drop-in, with a 6-pack or bottle to share!
Took me about five years to build up the nerve to try alcohol free beer (caution: it is not really alcohol free)! The first 6-pack didn't last long, but the last one sat in the fridge for about a year!
I found that O'Douls makes an amber ale that I actually like with my favorite food (Mexican)!
Best of luck Fred, I know you are man enough to do this!
Bill

Re: Fred Von Gortler update.
While I'm no expert on the subject, a friend of mine tells the story of kicking the drink habit after it almost killed him, and ended his marriage. He was sober for a couple of years and one day saw "Alcohol Free" beer in the supermarket, thinking, that's great. I can still get the taste without the result. Well, the first taste had him hooked again worse than ever. He hit absolute bottom. It was only a spiritual journey that stopped him from killing himself.smooth_bill wrote:

I certainly wouldn't recommend anything that claims it's alcohol free and still retains the characteristics of alcohol. It's all designed to get you hooked.
Fred, we've had our tense moments in the past, but know for sure that I'm praying for your "rebirth" brother as an alcohol-free-zone.
Rod.

I am super proud of you Fred. You are not missing out on anything. Your brain just thinks you are. Each passing day will get easier! Go forth and conquer! Let your wife know that she did right by you. She is a good woman for sure.

Re: Fred Von Gortler update.
Congratulations Fred! Well Done Sir! Glad to hear you’re on the straight and narrow. It’s a tough row to hoe starting out, sounds like you’ve got the first month behind you. Don’t dismiss the whiners at the Local AA, you can ignore them and still learn from the others who are there to assist with keeping you upright and on track. I know I learned a LOT from watching others make and share their mistakes, so I didn’t have to!

I read this post while listening to "Let it Be". I love it when that happens! Hi Phred!
Re: Fred Von Gortler update.
Fred, good to hear from you, don't even mess with the near beers, your wife has the right idea supporting you with drink you love without the addictive sting; keeping yourself busy helps to keep your mind on the right things.
There's much more to life out there to explore. Keep the faith, keep busy, keep the Mrs. happy, find a small thing to help others with, and may be an airplane project or two is in order.
1st Corinthians 10:13 wrote:No temptation has taken you, except that which is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond that which you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape, so that you may be able to endure it.

Re: Fred Von Gortler update.
Good on you, Fred!!! I admire your tenacity and determination.
My father was an alcoholic and I'm more than aware of the difficulties that can be brought to a family. I'm also mindful that there may be some evidence of an inherited tendency toward alcoholism, consequently, while I do drink, I have abided by a one drink self-imposed limit throughout my adult life -- it seems to have been effective.
