Canadian Variant P-51 Build
Hey guys. With my scratch build back to the drawing board, i though i would post my current project. I'm currently working on a Guillows P-51 Mustang kit.
Here are some current Pics:
The frame is 98% done, just missing 2 spars that need to be cut

Re: Canadian Variant P-51 Build
I wouldn't exactly call it rough, Canadian Variant? is there going to be big maple leaf splashed on the side? Or a fleur de lis? Just kidding, I wonder if there are any Canadian P51 pilots? Possibly I suppose. My Grandfather pokes fun at me for joining the "Yank Army" even though I am Air Force. He also likes to point out the fact that he joined in 1939 and not 1941 like the US. It's funny to hear the rant. Anyway looks like you got the larger version. Be sure to do the "plugging" as Kim suggested, extremely strong and very light, I dropped my fuselage from the ceiling on the nose and it bounced about 2 foot off the floor. Good enough test for me. Keep us posted and thanks for the pics!

Sub'd! I bought a Guilow's Hellcat earlier this year, but it was missing way to many pieces to do anything with.
Looking forward to the maiden flight!

Re: Canadian Variant P-51 Build
Canada, in WW2 played a big part on many fronts, including the air. The Canadian P-51 variant features a different color scheme as well as a pilot who trained with some of the best (RAF, or the Royal Air Force). Yes We have some of the best Pilots here, and I am proud of our air force. Thank you for your kind words ^_^ I look forward to seeing more from you too.cribbs74 wrote:I wouldn't exactly call it rough, Canadian Variant? is there going to be big maple leaf splashed on the side? Thanks man, glad you like it. One problem i found with early Guillows kits is, due to being Die Cut, they are not 100% accurate. Also I found one sheet of parts, where the numbers were printed on the wrong side of the wood.Kim wrote:Beautiful framed-up build Shell Shock! Quoting Shell Shock:
"Canada, in WW2 played a big part on many fronts, including the air. The Canadian P-51 variant features a different color scheme as well as a pilot who trained with some of the best (RAF, or the Royal Air Force). Yes We have some of the best Pilots here, and I am proud of our air force. "
According to an article in Air Classics magazine, the first aerial victory by a P-51 was scored by an RCAF pilot named Hollis Henry Hills, an American from (IIRC) one of the Dakotas. I found this interesting because my mother's maiden name is Hills, and because Hollis Henry was the name of the heroine in William Gibson's last two novels.

Re: Canadian Variant P-51 Build
Well,
I learned something new today, not only were there Canadian P51 pilots and planes, but an American RCAF pilot took the first aerial P51 victory. Vey strange, on the other hand I think quite a few Americans volunteered to help those who were fighting already since 1939 (RCAF) (RAF)
Shell Shock, I hope you took my jesting in stride. For what it's worth my entire family is Canadian on all sides. I was the only American born sibling in my immediate family. I too have a great respect for Canadian military and have family members who served in Canadian regiments back to WWI.
We probably should get back on track though.....sorry for changing the subject.

Re: Canadian Variant P-51 Build
Reminding you that Americans served during BOTH World wars prior to the official American entry.
Remember the Lafayette Escadrille of WWI? Captain Edie Richenbacher and the "Hat in the Ring" Squadron?
Prior to Pearl Harbor Americans under Secretary of State George C. Marshall established the " Lend-Lease Program" to aid the allies in Europe and elsewhere. And there's more too lengthy to explain here
Don't let anyone give you an "flack" about American hesitation to aid our allies.

Re: Canadian Variant P-51 Build
Super Dave,
Yes I do know of Eddie Rickenbacker, quite the WW1 Ace. I was stationed at Wright Patterson AFB and Rickenbacker NGB is somewhat close to there. It used to be an active base back in the SAC, MAC and TAC days. Of course the BRAC took care of that. The only flack I take is from my grandad, only because he has flack still stuck in his body LOL, seriously you should see his x-rays.

If you got the plans then go buy some balsa! sure all laser cut would be easier but, you can intermix what you have already.

Re: Canadian Variant P-51 Build
I would love to build one like that. I wonder if it would be a decent control line plane. Maybe they make a C/L version. What kind of engine power and weight can it handle? Or would I be committing a heresy to make a control liner out of a beautiful plane like that.

Rusty, It is a CL version. The plans tell you how to make both.

It looks like a challenge to cover with Ultracote and an iron. I might look into getting a P-51 kit.

It did come with plans, but I don't think I'm quite ready for a scratch build yet.

There was a recent movie made about a Escadrille squadron in WWI. A excellent movie called Flyboys.

PV:
The motto of the Lafayette Escadrille was" "Lafayette, we are here!"
This of course a reference to the French assistance given the American Revolutionary cause by the Marques de Lafayette as a miltary advisor to the US.
The real question is the degree to which France sided with the American cause against the British with whom France was almost constantly at war. Further following the American Revolution, France became involved in wars the new the newly-formed United States i.e. The French and Indian Wars and the War of 1812. Remember Andrew "Old Hickory"Jackson in the 1814 "Battle of New Orleans"?
But I ramble because I love history.

Re: Canadian Variant P-51 Build
Shell,
I am still torn on ailerons. I will see how it flies without em. I boxed my elevators and rudder in with doublers to allow a place for the hinges/thread. Your P51 is coming along nicely.
