It’s tough Fred, keep after it. It gets a little better every day. If you can make it a month it’s all downhill from there.
Proud of you!

My older brother quit smoking and drinking permanently at about your age Fred. He's 85 and counting now. Not a light smoker or drinker either. A two pack a day man and maybe a case of beer would last him a day or two.
Yes, Hang in there and Happy Birthday.

Fred, hang in there, you can do it. My old man was a pack a day type of person supplemented with pipe and occasional cigar. He was also obese. Early 50 YO had a triple bypass heart surgery. Then needed it 20 years later, was advised not to do by VA doctors in SC, died in surgery in HI from a doctor eager to operate.
Autopsy: emphysema, probable lung cancer. Had he laid off the cancer sticks, he might still be living today. My mother quit when he should have, she's now 85.

Re: Happy Birthday Fred Von Gortler!
happy birphday Phred.. I hope that your birphday was phrickin' excellent! Phred... I'm grappling with quitting cigarettes too. The last time I lit one up was sometime this past mid-December. Lynne and I were celebrating our 10 wedding anniversary.. and had booked a weekend away in nearby Sturbridge, MA. I came down with the "FLU" during the course of the weekend while we were away. I also scored a bagful of 2nd-hand Cox engines (on consignment to a local hobby-shop) for short-money.. which really made me happy.
Butt.. I've been off the butts pretty much since then. There's been a few times Phred; where it's been phriggin' hard.. LET ME TELL YOU. You just need to tell yourself that it's a deal that your making. It's a deal that you're making with yourself Phred.. and no one else. You're strong enough to quit smoking cigarettes Phred. If I have made it "seven months"... so can you.

All my CEF pals are so awesome! Thanks so much for the encouragement...day three is not as bad as yesterday...grin
Some additional info....early this year diagnosed with Crohns or IBS or what ever you want to use to describe a serious Bowel problem... one test was a contrast MRI that was both good and bad...
BUT as I worked through through the medical system on Doc told me I was developing COPD and I needed to stop the insane smoking..
Environmentally we have had two Sahara dust clouds over Texas from several months... This triggered allergic reactions well above my typical seasonal allergies...Doc said the COPD and eventual need for Ox Tank was far worse...got my attention!
Humidor gone...Pity too as it is beautiful, large and used to manage over 300 pretty high end GIFTS from co workers and family
Fuentes Opus Opus XX ( 4 at $75 each)...Lots of Drew estates Acid flavors ( Java a fav in the morning)
I actually planed this Birthday Quit back in Feb so had several patio events to drain the Humidor
I will not miss the two to three packs of cigs every day, but the loss of the Single malt Scotch DrinkyPoo and Very Good cigar is sad for me.... I could not afford to have that habit most of my life, and when I could finally afford it I liked being the BIG shot in my smallish circle of friends
Gastro doc is NOT very concerned with my Alcohol intake but suggested some moderation as we explore what drugs will be most effective
I know there are guys here who have history of Alcoholic problems in family...and I respect their point of view
So That said... as long as my liver (so far) tolerates my indulgence with Beer, Wine, and Booze...I will probably still post the odd slightly inebriated off the wall and controversial crapoola on CEF as I seem to now be the curmudgeon....grin

Re: Happy Birthday Fred Von Gortler!
You Know It Brother... I am near a day or three from pitching the Patches in the thrash
I am so motivated that this cold Turkey is not quit as bad as I imagined...yea it sucks...BUT
I bought a super Cheap Amazon Fire 8 during prime days for $19 and down loaded a bunch of Sci fyi books for loke 0.99 each...actually found a few authors I like and spend way too many hours absorbed in a good read..... with TV I was mostly going for a smoke at every commercial break...
Glad to be back to reading....
Side observation.... in my life I have read several hundred hard and paper back books....Clancy, Brown, King, Mcafferty, Cherry, Asimov, Hubbard and many many others...... at age now my eyes will not work for paper back fonts....
E-readers with ability to adjust page brightness and font type and size is a MAJOR plus
Crap I have read 13 books in the last 10 days....

way to go bro!
. You are doing the best thing you can do by quitting. Hang in there you Will get thru it and feel much better than you did before.Hey! Check out your "local library " if you have one available. Our county wide library system has a multitude of "books on tape" old school "CD" cassette tapes and readers.
My wife has "won" all sorts of sillly trinkets for reading 10 books a month, mostly Murder Mysteryies, Clive Cusslers or Steven King novels on CD's she listens to on CD players we buy at thrift stores for $2 or $3. I'm trying to get her to upgrade/update herself to the "downloadable" media so she can hook up to the library and download free books to a I pod or cell phone. I know her brother won't go anywhere with out a fully loaded Kindle fire!
You can keep the liver moist, no problem there!
