Socialism: the myth and the reality

Socialism: the myth and the reality
Most every country has socislistic intitutions:schools, public works, civil service etc. Yet no country has survived, for very long, with full Socialism in place.
Socialism is the seeming "impossible dream" because it denies the fundamental self-serving nature of mankind. Given a mass frontal lobotomy for mankind, things might go differently.

Re: Socialism: the myth and the reality
it is true people think it will work every time they try it but it all ways fails.
communism tends to last longer but at the end it never dissolves it goes out with a bang (literally sometimes)
as does fascism all systems fail.
Monarchies have worked in the past but are nearly always overthrown when a 'bad' one comes in.
so really no system works but i still kinda like the theory behind socialism the best.
Anarchy would be an intersting experiment as some people seem to want i would like to see them get it and then get scared.

I propose an experiment. Gather group of anarchist and have them inhabit an island run by the methods that they propose.
Any guesses what would happen? I'd bet the island would self-destruct in short order.
How about you?

Oh, yes! And then there's George Orwell's "Animal Farm".
Interesting because Orwell himself was an avowed Socialist (note large "S" rather than small) The animals in AF run the whole cycle winding up much as they started.

yes the thing that happened with him has happened to us over here.
everyone wants the prime minister to answer some questions but he keeps sending the deputy PM to do all his dirty work.

Somewhat similar to "Squealer" (the pig), Napoleon's underling, who did his bidding.
IMO, "Aminal Farm" is Socialism's ultimate critque.
Remember when Napoleon wrote "The Coomandments" which were later modified to suit his purpose?
"No animal shall sleep in a bed" became "No animal shall sleep in a bed without sheets."
Note: I have a lot of time to write because I am home-bound with a medical condition.

My condition is temporary but inconvenient and not unusual for my age.
My wife and I celebrated our Golden Wedding anniversary on August 19. And what a GRAND celebration is was! (Imagine 50 years with the same woman!)

Re: Socialism: the myth and the reality
Congratulations on your golden anniversary
One thing that I heard a long time ago is that each is an empire to some extent, and every empire fails...eventually.
The USA is only a tick past being 200 years old. It is at that age where all new, emerging empires either fail and disappear, or become the world leader. We had the chance I feel but now we're losing it in a big spiral.

Yes for the past 50 years the USA has been THE country all global pop culture came from there but now every country and city really has it's own pop culture. Hell I remember when English singers and rappers did fake American voices now they have their own special thing going on.
I believe it is the Internet as it means people can share whatever they like and people can watch whatever they like without embarrassment as everything is anonymous.

Thank you!
That observation more correcly applies to democracies rather than empires. In actuallity the US is not a democracy, but a constitutional repubulic run along democratic lines.
Greek democracy endured for many years until Greece fragmented into city-states which eventually fought each other in the Pelopenesian (sp?)Wars. Weakened by thse conflicts Greece was open to attack by outside barbarian invades. Never engaging in democracy, Rome overextended it's empire to the point of exhaustion. The presence of the remnants of Roman structures like Hadrian's Wall and the aquaducts in Britain stand as mute evidence of Roman occupation. Rome was ruled by an autocracy.
If the US were to fall I believe that it would come from within and for reasons that I would sepuculate if desired. President Dwight D. Eisenhower once said: "Only Americans can hurt America."
This I believe.

Extremely insidiuos but also helpful and entertaining as we all know as we all use it on a daily basis. But I think kids would be better off without it then there would still be a Market for cox engines but that is a other subject.
Re: Socialism: the myth and the reality
Nitro: And I think we should leave the topic there as it a has "drifted" off course.
But I believe by orginal subject line was worthy of a free-flowing "off-topic" discussion. To me Socialists (capital "S") are starry-eyed dreamers long on "vision" and short on the understanding of human nature.

As a very brief reprise, I'd just say the humanity is like the Earth upon which we live: unsettled and ever-changing.
