Cox Engine of The Month
Golden Bee

Golden Bee
When did Cox switch to the screen over the venturi on the golden bee? I won one on ebay last night and I am trying to figure out a rough estimate of when it was made.

Re: Golden Bee
The pinned in screen appeared (I think) about '61-'62 and the U.S.A. on intake groove about '64-'65. Thimble-Drome initially simply pressed in the in screen for a year or so (1960-'61), but most of those are now missing. Also, remember the stepped cylinder in early seventies.
Re: Golden Bee
Ok,
Thank you, when it arrives I will post a picture of it. Looks to have a pinned in crimped screen, made in U.S.A and possibly a stepped cylinder. Not sure about the step as the pics are fuzzy.

Re: Golden Bee
Not sure from the tiny pics but looks like it has a straight neck case so most likely 1970's.
Re: Golden Bee
Ok, didn't think it was anything spectacular, the price was right though.

Re: Golden Bee
Indra,
Funny thing is I saw the auction last week and missed the end time by a couple mins. Since there was no bidders I contacted the seller and told him I would be willing to pay the asking price of 14.95. I also told him we could do it through PayPal to make it secure and to prove I was legit.
He said no and that he would relist it at a lower starting price to attract more bidders. I ending up sniping it at $8.05.
He would have been better off to take my original offer........

Re: Golden Bee
That's exactly what I was thinking. Of course I didn't tell him it was a Cox Golden Bee and not a vintage tornado engine......

Re: Golden Bee
And then you get the ones who say 'I think eBay deserve to get
Their cut'.
Get in line.

John:
Curious comment.
Why doesn't E-bay deseve a a "cut"?
So far I have been able to acquire the engines that I wanted through private party transactions. This keeps me for buying on impulse.

Re: Golden Bee
As per Rons comment above Dave, sometimes aproaching a vendor results in the 'I must relist as I want ebay to get
their share' response. No I don't understand it either.
They will have had their cut in the form of listing fee but as it hasn't sold via their medium
I don't think they are entitled to any more.
But that's just me

Re: Golden Bee
John,
I have yet to hear that one yet, it doesn't surprise me though. I usually don't contact sellers offline except in this case I was upset I missed the end time by 2 mins.
Ebay has grown into a monster and as a part time seller I believe their "cut" is substantial.
They do offer a service but, at a high cost IMO. Ebay has every right to take their cut as it's no secret and they are not shifty about it. Sellers knowingly post auctions........If they don't get their cut I am not going to lose any sleep over it either!

Re: Golden Bee
I have contacted a seller about his unsold item before. He re-listed it for me and I bought it.

Matt,
Glad he did! There is a good possibility that his motives weren't genuine as in he wanted more bidders. Unless it was a BIN then maybe it was just for you!
