Re: What is this????
Yep,
It's a Fox .07
$5 is a good deal for that. Especially since it has the tank with it. It should clean up well. I've wanted one of those you lucky dog.

It can be used without the tank if you wanted to fire it off. I saw a NV on Ebay for $10 if yours is missing.

Re: What is this????
hey Mitch,
It's actually the second version of the 'Comet' engine made by Fox, your engine was first built in '59-'61 and is the 'long stroke' version with the aluminum spacer used on the P-40, designed to keep plastic from melting. Yours have the second version of tank, so it's probably 1960ish?
They're pretty good engines, like Ron said, cut tank off and use as beam mount, Fox actually did this with all the engines they got stuck with when Comet filed bankruptcy, more power then a Babe Bee

Re: What is this????
I'm not so sure that's the .07. It could be the .049. George GCB on the forum has several of the examples and gave a detailed description of those engines some time ago. The reason I'm curious, I believe the .07 had a triangular web casting supporting the front of the case from the bottom. There's some other differences and he's quite knowledgeable in regards to them. I also may have my thought process reversed, That left handed mentality I suffer from. I do own a .07 and one thing that I do recall that stands out from memory without digging it out of the box I have it stored in was the metal ground off of the case. The Comet logo was cast onto the case and then ground off leaving a distinguishable mark. Plugs are also getting harder to locate on these engines. Ken

i think it might be the .07, i compared the piston size of one of my cox .049s with the one in this engine and it is definetely bigger

Re: What is this????
Looking at Mark's engines, I have the same styles. My engine on the right is the .07, no triangular web casting like I originally thought. The cylinder base is considerably thicker on the .07 compared to the .049 on the left. This is noticeable in Mark's pictures as well. I did notice though that both cases have the grinding marks on the side of the cylinders where I thought this was just on the .07 only. Ken

Re: What is this????
The .07 was designed for Comet by Fox to give more power to the heavy plastic Comet RTF's, the .049 came after and was sold as a 'Hobby Engine'.
If you look at Ken's engine you see the one on the left is a Comet redo, where the Comet logo was ground off. Note: both engines are the same size.
A couple winters ago I spent alot of time researching/studying the Comet/Fox engines and with the help of Bill Mohrbacher and old notes from John Krickel, we pretty well got'er figured out. It's all posted on the 049 Collectors forum.

Re: What is this????
Ok, here's your baby: Yes, I think we can call it a 1959! Aluminum spacer under cylinder and new for '59, heavier cast fuel tank.

Re: What is this????
They're pretty nice engines, like a Cox, use lots of oil, 6x3 prop. Here's a photo of a old photo of a Nobler i designed for a 1/2A contests years ago, i built it with a flat wing for 20 more points...but put flaps on it, the Fox pulled it around pretty nice!

Re: What is this????
It appears I have my engines backwards in terms of .049-.07. Thanks for clearing that up. Ken

nope, the plane was built probably 11-12 years ago. I used it to fly in a 1/2a contest held yearly in Sandwhich, IL. We flew the PAMPA beginner pattern and the rules gave you 20 point for a flat wing, it flew pattern, but the third loop was pretty iffy!
Here's the Beginner pattern: http://www.control-line.org/DesktopDefault.aspx?tabid=35
Re: What is this????
thanks for the link Mark, those patterns look really cool and I will try them once I learn to fly cl planes. Looks like a very good plane
