Cox Engine of The Month
Rhino vs. Beaver
Rhino vs. Beaver
Does anyone know if the Cox Rhino was made by Cox as an airplane engine or if it was modified by an outside vendor? I thought that it was just a stripped Beaver chainsaw engine until I disassembled one and found some differences. I thought it was odd that they would mount the propeller on the flywheel side of the crank because it's the "floating" side, whereas the PTO side has the crankpin (just like their smaller engines). The PTO side rides in its own bearing housing that's removeable from the engine block. Upon closer examination of the pictures I noticed that the Rhino case has been machined to accept the PTO bearing housing on the other side of the engine, so the propeller really is mounted to the PTO side. The other side of the crank is probably excluded on the Rhino engine. Look at the pictures (the first one was "borrowed" from the web).

I ran across this video recently, which has an explanation of how the "Rhino" came to be.

Awesome video. Thanks roddie! I don’t even remember posting this but I do still have several of these engines. I have a couple Beaver chainsaws and a few Roper branded 140’s. Well I guess I don’t have a Rhino, that’s probably why I was asking if Cox sold them as model airplane engines or if they were modified by someone else.

I've had one for about five or six years. I'm just waiting until I have the time to draw up and build a 1/4 Scale Q-Tee. Nothing else would do for the engine, in my opinion.

I don't believe that Cox ever offered it as a model airplane engine but an aftermarketer did. Somewhere in my files I have information regarding it but I can't locate it at the moment. The one that I have came with a broken 20/5 Kolbo Korp/Corp propeller but ebay has the same propeller for sale and I just ordered one. It's the same basic engine minus the pull rope starter fitted with hex drive machine screws insted of the fillisters of the original and a glow plug not points and a magneto. The PTO is fitted with a propeller drive. Somewhat different from the Beaver chainsaw and the Bronco bicycle engines.
ebay prop. $8.39 USD - Canada sale

These two engines remind me of a engine I own which is the Tartan single. My Tartan was purposely built for airplane use. It came with a glow head which is currently configured for. It has this large head with this little glow plug in the middle. It's comical looking. I know somewhere I have a diesel head for it as well.
