Re: COX engine throttles
I will make a proper video, of high and low RPM, when i get my new fuel... its been two weeks and my lhs still has not received it.. should have just ordered my own.
And i will make a proper throttle arm and mount a servo on the text stand... should get better results that way.

nice work!
should work well with a servo attached.
looking forward to seeing the next vid.
do you have some details on Dave Robelen's 010 carb.
i dont think ive seen anything on it before??
cheers

Re: COX engine throttles
Thanks guys, much appreciated.
Here's the carb plans, its all there.
Dont remember which forum i got it from.. but its been posted several times in the many 010 throttle threads.. could have even been on here.
Im thinking on simplifying the design... since i dont have a lathe anymore.

Re: COX engine throttles
Well im loosing my patience with my lhs... now they say to wait another week
So i was anxious and decided to mount a servo and test it. too anxious, hence the crappy linkage rod... couldn't get the length right quick and dirty setup.
Works good, it does flood easy... im still fine tuning everything (needle, throttle, radio) cant wait to fly this thing, now that i finally have control over the little beast should be a blast!
Its quite sensitive to input as can be seen, that's when having a decent radio really becomes handy, im using helicopter mode on my DX7 as it lets me use throttle curves to fine tune the travel.
Im going to modify the needle as mentioned in a previous post by removing the shoulder, i will also probably drill the top to accept an M2 allen bolt... like the MF version.
After fiddling with the needle settings.. i did get it to run at a very low rpm for about 30 seconds, but it died as i got the camera ready.
Better fuel would help.. this stuff is old.
Here's the video of today's test... still room for improvement with selective tuning

I could upload the pics for you if you want, or im sure the other members wouldn't mind helping you out, im interested to see what you developed.
I would like to see more on throttling at the intake... so far i have only found one video of a 010, by a guy whos building an rc truck, what he had seemed crude, but worked quite well.
I noticed today my throttle was quite loose after yesterdays runs, a 1/4 turn on each nut made it perfect.. when properly adjusted, a little resistance is good,(smooth rotation) when the engine warms up it becomes as smooth as butter.
If there is any notchyness then both sides aren't adjusted evenly, i use a digital caliper at the gaps to get it as close as possible.

thanks
But I did finally manage to get picsto load. Adding a intake throttle may actually lower and stabalize your already nice idle if idle is erratic.mx862 wrote:Jaspur_x wrote:I had issues figuring out how to get home to work, but at least I tried. Re: COX engine throttles
I found a way to start a new youtube account and bypassing all the google+ BS. here's a new video running rich... rpm seems around 10k maybe lower?
Yeah idle is funny, had to re read this thread http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_10820493/mpage_1/key_/tm.htm specifically AndyW's posts, on throttling at the exhaust.. on how it goes lean on idle, so running rich gives a lower idle.. but top end suffers.
Its more than good enough for my plane the way it is now, but ive been trying to get more 010's of ebay but i keep getting out bid at the last second would be fun to have multiple engines with different throttle configurations.
EDIT: i have now uploaded all the previous videos, all new vids will be uploaded to this account.

Seems the TD .010 engines are hot now and snipers are scooping them up. Have to search for the hidden engines on ebay or may be mislabled or incorrect spelling and such.

That's how i found mine, it was a buy it now auction, almost mint for 100$ with free shipping came with the tank but i removed it.
The "snipers" are also finding the hidden ones, oh well, if i see a decent priced one with a buy it now option i wont hesitate.

Re: COX engine throttles
Well here i am again with yet another update.
I think i got it to where i like it now, should be fine for a plane, i forgot to setup the throttle curve for flight mode 2... you can see my boney hand flipping the switch with no effect.. so i pinched the fuel line to kill it I was going to setup throttle hold also... but decided that the flight mode switch will be fine.
Servo geometry was redone to make it the way it would be in a model.
On a different note, i took the engine apart for a cleaning today.. after running it for 2 months almost everyday... looks like this piston is getting worn out, compression without castor is not what it used to be, and it does leak around the piston, evident as bubbles appear at the ports at tdc or close to it. The cylinder looks good, no evident signs of wear.. so evenly worn.
I got a new piston coming hopefully next week, will see if the fit improves.. if not i will just buy a nib engine.
Im quite happy with this throttle, it works better than i expected, then again until this i had no experience with throttled cox engines.
If i make any more, i will photo etch the brass parts, no cutting/drilling/filing, perfect parts every time. If anybody wants to try to make one, that would be the route to take. Although it sounds complicated.. it's really not, much simpler than doing things by hand, mask could be bought online, chemicals arent that hard to get... or just buy the micro mark kit http://www.ebay.com/itm/Micro-Mark-Photo-Etch-KIt-/321064623357?pt=Model_Kit_US&hash=item4ac0f15cfd Everything one needs, forget the heavy tools.
Now lets see more throttled 010's!
Cheers

You can watch all the vids posted up till now.. as i have re uploaded them all.
I could never do control line... three rotations and i throw up... my first cox plane was a pt-19 rtf, in 1992, Did not last long all my experience back then was with free flight.. i got the electric F8F Bearcat back in the mid nineties that was probably my favorite cl plane, i never got beyond that.

He is a great guy and has tons of knowledge on the subject of 1/2A engines etc. We must have swapped a cople hundred messages over the years.
He managed to make a great throttle for his COX TD 010 but had dificulty reproducing it after selling off his first. We got into the idea of studying the dynamics and making a comparrson of the trickiest to throttle engines by comparrison to the best running/throttling (1/2A of course) engines to compare volumes, porting, timing, and a slew of other variables that lay key roles in throttle prformance.
Sadly, this is still on my to do list as it is awesomely time consuming.
I managed to get a little better video of one of mine, uploading as I type this

Looking forward to the video... Seems he hasnt been around rcu in awhile, would be great to have him here, but as time goes on our priorities change... i have some time to play with this stuff for the next few month's.. then motocross season starts.. and im occupied for the next 8 months

Finally! Very nice!!
Its hard to tell from the vid... but from what i can see, exhaust restrictor with a carb? seems to work very well! Can you post a picture of the carb? or some more details?
Once again nice job!
