Hello from South Carolina

Hello from South Carolina
It's about time I did this...
Hello everyone. My name is Matthew, or Matt, and am 13. Many thanks to Jacob for starting the forum, it's nice to have one completely dedicated to Cox products - I learn something new every day. I found through RCGroups thanks to nitroairplane
I have always been an avid RC enthusiast, flying all kinds of planes. IC, electric, 3D, micro, etc. My first encounter with a cox engine was at an RC event 2 years ago; a vendor was selling SureStarts for $6 each. Then my brother wanted to try running one on hydrogen. (Yes, I know, a little, er, different) So my uncle proceeded to give us an old .049, some fuel, a glow clip, and a wrench. He quickly abandoned the project. I then bought the stuff from my brother for $5. I couldn't get it to run, later I found out you need all four backplate screws and the right fuel. A few months later I traded a small radio system for a few .049 engines. A pre-96 Black Widow, a postage stamp motor, a testors motor (Junk, never ran right) and some other stuff like glow heads. Me and my uncle got the right fuel, which had castor but only %10 nitro content. But the BW screamed, it was the loudest thing I'd ever heard. And it went from there...
I now have 7 engines,(three of those, I am able to run) two wrenches, about 4 heads and a couple props. I am also working on and electric to glow .049 parkflier conversion.

dude:
Thanks for the intro. Although you have been here for a time it's alway good to know something about posters. At 13 you seem quite knowledgeable an "Coxwise".
I can envision how well your hydrogen experienent worked out and it couldn't have been good. (You might like to reference the Hindenberg Disaster if you want to see what happens to hydrogen when ignited.

I try to learn as much as I can - they fascinate me. When I roll out my first completed plane, I bet there will be many upraised eyebrows. He made the stuff with copper and zinc sticks (I think?) in a jar and captured it in a ballon. The biggest problem is the glow head, it would ignite too early and blow the motor up. But if it wasn't for those crazy ideas I might not be here.

you hit the nail on the head there that is exactly what i was thinking even though one of the major factors of the Hindenberg disaster was actually the dope on the outside of the airship.
Mathew you are very good pilot for a !£ year old i am 48 and cant prop hang
keep meaning to try 3D but keep taking on other projects.
to get an engine to run on hydrogen you would also need a form of lubrication. thinking of alternative fuels i ran my G mark .03 on gasoline,Methylated spirits and olive oil.
Re: Hello from South Carolina
As to the 1937 Hindenburg Disaster, it's true that dope may have been an accelerant but it was not the source of ignition. It's generlly agreed that spark from static electricity ignited the Hindenberg's hydrogen. (The day was cloudy and overcast which are idea for same.)
Hydrogen used it the presence of a glo head is unthinkable. Glo heads "glow" contantly, either from a battery ot the heat of combustion rather than intermittenly as opposed to a spark plug which fires only when "told" to do so by some mechanism like a cam or distributor.

yes if i was going to use hydrogen i would try a spark plug or HIGH compression and heat to see if i could ignite it that way.
Re: Hello from South Carolina
Hey, could you guys move this over to the introduction forum? How did I miss that.

Hi Cayceboy. We live about 10 miles apart. We should get together and fly. I always need a ground crew. Sometimes my wife helps me, but I hate to always be asking her to come help me play with my toys. Are you going to be around tomorrow or sunday?
I can't remember, is it you or Nitroairplane that wants to learn CL? I've got a small CL field across the street from my house and I want to maiden my Satan.

Hello midlandman.
Sounds like fun. I am about to leave for a float fly event at Lake Murray, to watch RC planes fly off the water. I'd love to help with the plane...
Nitro was the one who wanted to, but I wouldn't mind either.
