What glow head is this?
Hi
I found this glow head and I was wondering if anyone knows what type of glow head it is? Thanks!
It has 3 cooling fins and has a ringed pattern on the top

a ringed pattern...that's a high compression glow head, nice!
to double check, look at the inside of the head, is it shaped sort of like a bowl, or more like a coneß
If its cone-shaped it definitly is high comp.
welcome to the forum, Bradders!

Hi Beez
Thanks for that! I just put it on a cox engine but it seems to have much lower compression that the normal head, any ideas?
Thanks!

Re: What glow head is this?
hm...i think i've got the same issue with my super bee, which comes with a pre-installed high comp head. it does seem
as if the compression is lower. but i beleive the actual high compression occurs when the engine runs. what happens is that the fresh mixture gets forced up that cone creating a temporary high pressure zone where the platinum glow element is. in a normal bowl shaped head, the pressure gets distributed thoughout the combustion chamber, and not concentrated on one single point. so, what engines have got? pictures are always welcome!

Well, I have tried for an hour following the instructions to upload a picture but it just won't work. I've got a diesel bomber from Bernie, a product engine and a babe bee with a mangled cylinder. All are very, very hard to start

Can't tell for sure by the photo, but you may have a "W" filament head, which are somewhat collectible. They're not high-compression, but a standard head with a different filament style that Cox tried for a while.
They are marked by a ring on the top of the head.

Re: What glow head is this?
I don't think it is a w filament head, the coil is sort of messy, it only has 2 turns to it, both of different sizes, it's really wierd!

Re: What glow head is this?
Hi Bradders
The Bees are very EASY to start.
If not something basic is wrong.
Have you got (ideally) a bright almost whitish orange
Glow on your g plugs if not your battery is a dud.
If you have than it's your fuel. Either wrong type or
More likely old/contaminated.
Have you 'primed' the exhaust port?
Have you had a brief braaaaaP? Open the needle valve
More.
Have you got head gasket(s) between head and cylinder?
You are using proper cox spanners aren't you?

Re: What glow head is this?
Well, the fuel is newish, I've primed it, I've tried 3 different glow heads, 2 standard compression which are hot when the battery is applied but nowhere near glowing and the glow head I've posted about which glows red but compression is way low and still nothing happens!

Re: What glow head is this?
huh, sounds like the piston of your babe bee has had it...if it won't get any sufficient compression, then you'll have to swap the piston or buy a new piston/cylinder set :/

Re: What glow head is this?
I'll try the one from the diesel bomber, it runs so well on diesel but not glow, also how would I make a new diesel disc? What diameter do they need to be?

Re: What glow head is this?
Hi Bradders
I take it you're having trouble with all these engines?
If so that would suggest to me it isn't a piston prob
Not unless you were unlucky enough to have several
Engines all with knackered pistons.
No, I'd think it much more likely that it's the same issue
Outside the engine. Either glow/lack of one.
Fuel/just because you bought it last week doesn't mean it's
Fresh/ I bought some last year and the shop must have had it
For 15/20 years because of the price stickers, at least 2 of the
5 bottles I bought were no good as model engine fuel.
Or perhaps your technique is wrong .

Re: What glow head is this?
Well, I fill the tank, it's a 3 ml syringe I've strapped onto a piece of wood, I then block the Venturi and turn the engine over untill the fuel just meets the brass pipe, I then prime the engine with a few drops from a syringe, attach the glow leads and turn the sping starter back 1 1/4 turns and let go. If that fails several times I do resort to the electric starter but with no luck. The fuel I'm using is model technics 16% nitro duraglo. When I got the fuel it was clean and the container was too, the fuel still is clean. Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks for all your help!

Yo B
S T O P!!!!!!!
Dura Glo is good for one thing
Starting barbeques
Throw it away.
PM me your address and I'll post you a small amount of
SMC 20
It was made in March so it is Fresh
I doubt your BBQ lighter is.
Cos it's clean doesn't mean it's any good
It degrades over time also it absorbs water
From the atmosphere. Thank your
Lucky
Stars that it didn't start cos there ain't enough
Oil in it and if if had started you'd have a nice
Paper weight instead of a engine by now.
Best

Re: What glow head is this?
Well the bomber engine now runs a treat thanks to John and the fuel As for that glow head... I've followed the instructions on uploading an image and I get to the 'host it' button and nothing then happens. That first image I uploaded must've been luck! The ringed pattern on top looks stamped with lots of small grooves coming from the centre and the actual inside is a steep cone down to the filament. Weird?!
