Cox Engine of The Month
Cox .15 Medallion with "pin" style piston/conrod?
Cox .15 Medallion with "pin" style piston/conrod?
We have a customer who bought 2 Cox .15 Medallion engines, both brand new in the box, that have the "pin" style piston connector like in the TD .15 Special.
He knows they are Medallions bcause the boxes state this and he also has other .15 Medallions with the "ball" type connection.
The boxes state part # 220... 1198
Anyone ever heard of this?

I'm being thick (Again) Bernie what's the question?
Is the part No correct?
Or do they exist?
They def exist cos My R/C version has a wrist (Gudgeon in Britain) pin.

Do they exist, as I was not aware they existed. This fellow is referring to a non-RC Medallion that looks exactly like others that have the ball style.

I have one .15 medallion with RC ring NIB. Piston is the ball type and stated parts numbers are 2275 (cylinder, piston and rod) and 2286 (with throttle ring).

How many bypass ports does that one have?

Looks like a full TD set then, I thought all the medallions only had one transfer?

I'm think I'm going to stop RIGHT now!
What a fantastic day
Coming up with a carbed tanked Cox that no one else has thought of
AND
Now
I find out I CAN run my 15 (MK1) cos I've got a spare cylinder
YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY

The ones in question are single port and not TD ones.
It has not been substantiated (yet) that these "pin" versions have been deliberately manufactured.

Yes they were but I can only confirm they came on the cox tee dee .15 special.Cox International wrote:The ones in question are single port and not TD ones.

The tee dee .15 special mk.2 and Joe Sesere's hot tee dee .049!John Goddard wrote:Which is the TD with the single ex port?

The Medallion and it's not the exhaust port; it's the bypass port inside.
Re: Cox .15 Medallion with "pin" style piston/conrod?
No he means the tee dee .15 special mk2 it has 1 exhaust port.
Re: Cox .15 Medallion with "pin" style piston/conrod?
The gist of my question still remains.
Has Cox ever manufactured a Medallion (non-RC) 15 with a piston that uses the "Pin"?
If they made an RC version that way there is a possibilty that the RC ring was removed before sale and that might explain it.
However, I have never heard of a Medallion box stamped with 220 - 1198.
Furthermore, the .15 Special piston was of different bore and stroke and would not have fit the Medallion cylinder.
As these engines were bought brand new at a hobby shop it is unlikely that the top end was swapped.
So, were these engines flukes or did Cox at some point make some like that?

This is how the part # appears on the box:
220:1198
He said he bought them in 1967-68

Yes, on the Medallion 15RC and on the Tee Dee .15 Special.
Question was, has anyone ever seen them on the Medallion .15 FF (regular)?

I have a Medallion .15 with that type of piston. It's a single bypass.

Re: Cox .15 Medallion with "pin" style piston/conrod?
So reading all this info. on the engines at stake here, less the regular Medallion .15..The Medallion RC and the Tee Dee Mark 1 , both engines have the same piston and cylinder make up..I think this is what I took away from this, I could be wrong beacause I'm kinda thick once in a while...that beind said, Would I be wrong to assume with the same cylinder and by-pass set up..these engines should be the same in performance? A Tee Dee Mark 1 is equal to a medallion .15 RC ????

Maybe close but, not equal. The medallion has a different, less effective crank. Not bad mind you just less of an intake cutout.

Re: Cox .15 Medallion with "pin" style piston/conrod?
Little off topic but the .15 Mark 2 special has 3 bypass ports!! Never realized this until I inspected the engine. It also has the pin style piston/conrod assembly. The RC Medallion .15 has double bypass with ball type piston/conrod. The regular .15 Medallion has ball type piston/conrod assembly with single bypass port. The Mark 1 special shares the same set up as the Medallion RC. Hope this helps.
