Re: Building a 50 year old Comet P-40 Kit
Silk was an old technique even on planked surfaces, and done correctly is extremely light, lighter than Monokote and very strong, strengthening a stick build framework.getback wrote:What he said ... The old kits are old and need the extra patients that it takes to put hem back together , But can bee frustrating. And please remember to tell me this when I build a oldie but Goldie model Looks like a silk job would have been well easier than all the panels but would not bee original .
You are correct, Eric. I need to get back to my 1959 Berkeley Impulse kit build. Have it all framed, just need to complete fuselage upper and lower planking, join wings & cover, clean up fuselage elevator installation (hole for it is rough cut not exact) and radio installation with controls.
Berkeley is perhaps one of the worst earlier kits to build around. The wood cutting and quality makes the earlier Guillows and Sterling kits look deluxe. But, because I wanted it to be representative of what one can do with the kit wood, I proceeded.
I'd never seen die cutting that was crude enough to require considerable re-adjustments to make it work. The wood looks like that rejected by Guillows, Sterling and Comet.
Now I can understand why Duke Fox only retained them for a short while in the early 1960's, until they were basically bought out by SIG. SIG redeemed the situation and brought out better quality in the kits, renaming the best of the designs to Craftsman Scale series half-A F/F kits.
This is part of the reason why I miss the old SIG company under the late Glenn Sigafoose. When I was about 10, my father would order balsa from them, even made a scratch build rubber powered biplane from their wood stock. When in high school, I made orders from SIG on to my adult years. Their balsa, ply hardwood and music wire were always top notch.
Legacy continued under his wife, Hazel and Maxey Hester, IMO. Ah, the bygone days ...
I don't fault the new owners, times have changed and they need to maintain profitability in order to survive. I'm afeared that those days with SIG and their legacy supplies are now long gone.

It's coming together nicely Joe , was that cowl one piece of balsa that you shaped and why did it look hexagon before shaping ? I hope you had a band saw for some of the cutting

Re: Building a 50 year old Comet P-40 Kit
made the nose out of a 2X2 Balsa block with 1/4 thick glued on the sides and 1/8 hard balsa glued on the front, and trimmed it down with a little hand saw and then sanded the rough shape. It still needs finish sanded.getback wrote:It's coming together nicely Joe , was that cowl one piece of balsa that you shaped and why did it look hexagon before shaping ? Coming along Joe and looking good. Light at the end of the tunnel stage. I'm, not sure what you meant by "gunsight handle for the battery latch. But I looked through some of my old plastic kits for a gunsight that would apply. Didn't fine one, but maybe you can. Fussy thing to fabricate.

That is shaping up really nice. I like to see a scale model going together. Have not seen a P40 build for a long time or a Comet kit build. I still have several nice Comet kits with the print wood that I should build . Your P40 is inspiring me to buld one of mine.

Thank you, it’s been fun , but it’s more like scratch building . The die crunch parts in this kit were terrible.Mike1484 wrote:That is shaping up really nice. Thanks Bob and Eric, I’m going to fly it soon , it should fly pretty good , it’s the same weight as some of my foamies of the same size. The balance came out good without having to add weight.

I noticed that. Looks like a 1/5th scale from a P-51. Pretty neat. I was trying to figure out what was in the glass jar.

It’s super glue and kicker. Makes me wonder how I built this airplane back in the 70 tees without itrsv1cox wrote:I noticed that. Looks like a 1/5th scale from a P-51. Pretty neat. I was trying to figure out what was in the glass jar.

Spoils you doesn't it.
I usually tack with it then back it up with a drop of carpenters glue.
