Will be my first balsa build. Plan to fly it on a tether with a peewee .020 up front.

By tether do you mean string and stick as seen in the guillows plans or CL. If the former the 500 series is what you want. For the later the 400 series comes with a CL setup in the kit.

As to what flies the best maybe our seasoned members could fill you in.

Dude:

If you are not an experienced flyer or builder I'd stay away from Guillow's for awhile.

As a CL model for a PeeWee .020 I"d recommend a "Lil Toot" bipe by Brodak. (it is NOT a tether model per se)

I have one completed and sitting here in my den. It's a blast to fly with the PeeWee but it is overpowered with an .049 and glides like a concrete cinder block. Laughing

Thanks guys. I want to slowly ease in, and eventually fly CL. Not ready for CL, so thought I would try "tether flying". Is this easy? I know it is very easy to set up. These planes are relatively cheap, ($15) so it won't be bad if I screw something up. I am building a larger kit with my uncle now, and have built a few .40 ARFs.

There is a Hobby Lobby close to our house. I doubt they will carry the planes much longer, so I wanted to pick one up. They have the Cessna 172, and a few warbirds.

I will definiately fly over grass, last thing I want is a busted PeeWee backplate.

In the early 70's, I had a ton of fun flying a Guillows Piper Cub with a very sick .020. I cut the tail feathers from solid balsa (1/16th I think), installed a bellcrank with wire lead guides for the leadouts, painted yellow (of course), and flew it 'till the light siilkspan started to split open. If you fly it as a control liner, it will easily tolerate the weight of "plug-planking" it back, past the landing gear.

I could only fly it on dead-calm days, and "aerobatics" consisted of gentle climbs and dives, but the fun of rolling it's tires on the parking lot, then lifting off again was a hoot for me. The Aeronca Champ in the same scale would behave that way also.

You might be able to duplicate this "Scale Flight" by installing the prop backwards and running the Pee Wee a bit rich if it will tolerate it.

Just a thought...

My reluctance to recommend a Guillow's model to beginner is that they a time-consuming to construct and realatively fragile when flown by the "uninitiated". I recommend a slab balsa profile fuse and a sheet balsa wing for the "first timer".

Quick to build and rugged enough to endure the inevitable light crashes.

I will consider the idea. Thanks!

I bet we could have you flying C/L like a pro in an afternoon. They've got one channel - the elevator - up and down. You're welcome to lug my PT-19 around the sky next time we can arrange it. One Saturday or Sunday we can make divots in the church yard until you can fly out a whole tank, or until we run out of rubber bands. It's not that hard. Advancing to speed and aerobatics takes a lot of practice, but we'll have you flying flat laps sooner than you think. We'll get the handle in your Dad's hand too. It's gonna be a great Summer.

Thanks Mr. Rusty. You have now inspired me to cut up some coroplast sheets. Smile

Matt:

Do you understand that "tether flying" consists of attacthing a line to the plane's wingtip and then whipping it around in a circle?

It can be, but instructions in the kit tell you how to mount an .020/.010 for "tether" flying. That is how I understand it all.

Yes you mount it and then raise/lower the stick to ascend/descend.

PLUS, you don't need an engine to do this.

Pretty dull stuff which would soon bore all but the simple of mind. Wink
