Re: Wanted TD 051 Piston & Cylinder
That's going to bee hard to find / the .049 w/SPI TD style are at Cox Inter. and they are strong runners from what i have experienced https://coxengines.ca/top-end/cox--049-tee-dee-cylinder-and-piston.html Not tapered though

So all the OEM .049 cylinders and pistons are gone now? What is available now is new manufacture? Has anyone tried the new yet?
Good thing Im a hoarder er collector.

I see Cox has new pistons and cylinders for the Tee Dee 049's but not the 051's.crankbndr wrote:So all the OEM .049 cylinders and pistons are gone now? What is available now is new manufacture? Has anyone tried the new yet?

I got lucky through our club members who offered up their 051 parts and engines though.

Re: Wanted TD 051 Piston & Cylinder
Oh sorry first cup O joe ,,, i have ran them and was very pleased with the performance of the new remake #4 cly. sets They do have the 2 boost and flute ports so you get the same as the original .049 TDs witch to my understanding never had a taper witch is so tight the piston will not come out the top of the cly possible till it warms up and are very tight when cold because of the tapered cly. this is more a non wear factor = you have more to wear down in the cly before its trash . ( hard to start /not performing as new .) https://www.google.com/search?q=cylinder+taper+engines+in+performance+engines&sxsrf=ALiCzsb8ejorBQlxdc6l0n5tYVos4SioMw%3A1656931219237&ei=k8PCYtSVDpG5qtsPrP2v4As&oq=+cylinder+taper+engines+in+performance&gs_lcp=Cgdnd3Mtd2l6EAEYADIFCCEQoAEyBQghEKABOgUIIRCrAjoICCEQHhAWEB06CgghEB4QDxAWEB1KBAhBGABKBAhGGABQAFjskQFg56cBaABwAXgAgAF4iAHbDpIBBDAuMTeYAQCgAQHAAQE&sclient=gws-wiz

Re: Wanted TD 051 Piston & Cylinder
No worries. takes me 2 cups of coffee to wake up. Anyway, a club member has an 051 parts engine for me, so im good on pistons again!getback wrote:Oh sorry first cup O joe ,,, i have ran them and was very pleased with the performance of the new remake #4 cly. sets They do have the 2 boost and flute ports so you get the same as the original .049 TDs witch to my understanding never had a taper witch is so tight the piston will not come out the top of the cly possible till it warms up and are very tight when cold because of the tapered cly. this is more a non wear factor = you have more to wear down in the cly before its trash . Did you just need the piston ? You get a chance to read through the engine test ? Glad you were able to get the parts .

Re: Wanted TD 051 Piston & Cylinder
I am an advocate of old stock tapered bore cylinder piston combos, that I see perform excellent for very long times, hundreds of hours.
I am unsure though whether taper bore cylinders came with tapered pistons too. Some threads here claim only the cylinder was tapered but the piston is straight in old stock TeeDee-s and thin wall cylinders.
I once combined a tapered old stock 051 cylinder with a later production 051 piston and the result was very discouraging: the engine struggled to reach rpm-s common with old stock TeeDee-s, and the piston top 3rd was visibly worn.
This has not been observed with old stock tapered bore TeeDee cylinder combos, that alludes the piston should also be tapered.
So I would recommend you combine taper bore cylinders with taper pistons only, or do not swap these components unless you are sure all parts swapped are tapered.

Hi Andras, what are the overall diameter of a tapered piston at top and bottom end? For .049 or .051 engines.

I think that it isn't easy to read the diameter difference.

Yes, i got a piston and just need to pick it up. Its coming off an 051parts engine, and yes i did skim through the engine test link. Thats quite a volume of info!getback wrote:Did you just need the piston ? You get a chance to read through the engine test ? Glad you were able to get the parts .

Thanks Levent, this was the thread from 2012 that I remembered and I confirm that later production TeeDee-s with thick wall cylinders in my fleet are non-taper. All older TeeDee- s with stepped and thin wall cylinders are tapered. I do not have the fine tools to measure the piston top and bottom diameters unfortunately, but the pistons of tapered bore cylinders all stick at TDC.

Thanks Andras. It seems that a different process need to be used to manufacture tapered pistons and cylinders.
