Cox 051 Piston SHAKEDOWN
Ok Guys here we go.
This one of those 'why we need a Reference Library moments (again).......!
The first 3 shots are of my November 1975 051 which only had the wire untwisted for these photos's
Hopefully you can see the Litho date on the bottom left of the manual.
The next 5 shots with my not cheap Blue Point Snap On calipers show that the skirt is indeed larger than the crown on a
75 TeeDee 051 Piston. Before anyone crys 'Foul' look closely and you'll see I''ve placed piston both ways up 'just in case'
the jaws are not parallel.
Lastly I thought you'd all like to see one of Toms NFFS 051 pistons that are what he's always said they were i.e.
completely cylindrical and not tapered.
I might get the scales out later
But
I think that's it for a while I need to Lay down for a bit DR Feelgood will be along with my medicine shortly...

So why are you selling tapered "NFFS 051 pistons" on ebay, if the originals were not tapered?

Funny, I have the same exact caliper, but without the fancy Blue Point sticker, which costs extra. Good calipers, with or without the sticker. I have double checked them against a multitude of others, including the Holy Grail of calipers,,$Starrett$.

Re: Cox 051 Piston SHAKEDOWN
Wouldn't it be better to get dimensions of the crown vs the skirt? I really couldn't see a difference.

Wing:
Fact is both the bore and the piston are tapered on both the TD .049 & .051. Ask Paul Gibeault.

Yes tat is what I believe but it is only the early number 4 sets.SuperDave wrote:Wing:

No worries Travis
The shots were to demonstrate that the TD piston when inserted between 2 parallel points would swing/pivot
from one end (ie the widest) and I've inverted it as well to show that the jaws were parallel and it swung/pivoted
from the same end.
As for measurements the Battery is 'somewhere' on the floor......

Re: Cox 051 Piston SHAKEDOWN
We are in possession of the TD .049 drawings as well as drawings for several versions of the pistons and cylinders.
Cylinders were tapered until somewhere late 80's / early 90's. After that the #4 cylinders were not tapered.
Pistons in general were NOT tapered and, when they were, certainly not on the bottom. The ones that were tapered were not conical but rather had a "ring" at the top. Those were only made for a limited time.
NFFS .051 pistons are different than the TD and KB ones in that they have a bigger bore. They are untapered.
"Real" KB pistons are untapered but lightened.

2 Reasons this can happen.
1) Piston wear
2) Manufacturing tolerances (.0001" length-wise)
