Lil Snip build

Lil Snip build
On New Years day, one of our members left some kits on the picnic bench for everyone who wanted them. It's no surprise to me that hardly any of them found a home. Very few are building and these kits weren't entirely complete. When it started raining my buddy Dan tossed a Ringmaster kit and a Midwest Lil Snip kit into my front seat. This weekend, I already have the Ring wing framed up and I completed the Lil Snip. The last time I had a Lil Snip was probably 1983 and it was Black Widow powered.
I took out the kit, noticed certain parts were needed and gathered up the needed supplies. I got out the wax paper, pins, Sig Bond, etc. Remember that stuff? No motor mount material was in the kit so I cut up some maple. No bellcrank, I had a few Carl Goldberg nylon versions which were bigger than what was spec'd on the print. No worries, grind out the ribs and carry on. The bladder tube is excessively skinny and I have to use latex in it and not my standard surgical tubing. I'm not a big fan of latex because it's weak and is subject to rupturing especially when exposed to the sun on a hot day. When I have a bladder under pressure in the wing, I generally cover it with a shop rag to shield it from getting hot.
I was able to get it completed tonight
I cut the nose a bit short and opened the beams slightly wider to allow for the VA MK 1. A also have a TD .051 to try. The TD sharers the same bolt pattern as the Norvel and others. I used Sig Lite Coat on all exposed wood. Hinges are from Tom Morris which is Dacron and they're extremely strong.

Re: Lil Snip build
Eric, the covering is yellow transparent Monokote and the orange tip is as well. I had just enough on the roll so I gave it a go. The Ringmaster didn't have a fuse. I have a new unused fuse.

My guess would be for a bladder fuel system... on Kens you can see the hole in the sheeting aft of the nacelle for fill/feed tubes. I could be wrong?..

Re: Lil Snip build
The tube is for a bladder. I didn't cut out my covering yet but as noticed the sheeting is cutout. Unfortunately, due to the low profile of this wing, the bladder tube is very skinny. This doesn't allow for the type of tubing we use today. Conventional bladder material inflates fairly wide and narrow whereas a long skinny bladder would be needed almost hot dog like. Pen bladders were what was used back then and I'm certain there not easily available.

Re: Lil Snip build
Back in the day we used 1/16" ID latex tubing for the bladders on 1/2A speed planes. Tied a knot on one end. It would inflate to about the diameter of a finger or hot dog wiener. It fit inside a Cox 1/2A pan and fuselage, and I think we put 15cc of fuel in for a proto or speed plane if that sounds right. I seem to recall 3 marks on the syringe. That tube looks much longer, so a longer run would be possible. That tubing is widely available at most better drug stores still, even now.

Re: Lil Snip build
The problem with pen bladders, pipette bulbs, latex is that they fail and they do so fairly quickly. The other problem is that unlike reinforced surgical tubing, they break down even after one filling. Therefore, the squeeze or the push they offer isn't the same as the first filling. In colder weather, this condition becomes worse.
