Cox Engine of The Month
Small Enya engine 049 with a broken crank shaft?

Small Enya engine 049 with a broken crank shaft?
I was reading here a few months ago of someone who has a small Enya engine (049 or 06) with a broken crank shaft.
I purchased this engine and it had a bent crank shaft. Though the seller didn't mention it.
I heated up the threaded part of the crank (the part that was bent).
With a small piece of tubing over the threads I tried to bend the shaft back when it broke.
I would like to know what he did with his Enya with the broken shaft?

Re: Small Enya engine 049 with a broken crank shaft?
All I can suggest in this instance (unless Ken Enya suddenly discovers an overlooked cache of spare parts languishing in some dark corner) is to dismantle the engine, chuck the shaft on a lathe (I'd be using a collect not a conventional chuck in this instance and drill out the broken stub to take a smaller diameter threaded stud or allen hex head cap screw. It won't be pretty-and it won't look original....but it will give you an engine you can actually use again.
If you have access to really good equipment, you could insert a stepped insert-the narrower thread inside the shaft, and get the outer portion machined back to the original thread diameter and rethread. You'd need quite good steel and good machining gear to do this accurately. I had this done for me on a late model DC Dart* by Jon Fletcher in Australia-effectively rebuilding the broken shaft to 'back to original' dimensions. Of course the shaft was hardened and ground, and he had to use a carbide drill to do it....
*the very last run of DC Darts produced ca 1983-4 quickly gained notoriety as having shafts with about the same strength as a carrot...and snapped just as easily. Anecdotally the entire batch of shafts had their hardening and tempering badly messed up. Whether this was a cockup at DC , or the job was outsourced.....has never been made clear. This batch of Darts are readily identified by their yellow anodised cylinder heads, rather than the traditional red or pink. The general advice has always been"if you have one-don't run it..."

Re: Small Enya engine 049 with a broken crank shaft?
I have a K&B Torpedo .15 which had the crank snapped in a similar way. I purchased it with a prop attached and didn't notice anything odd by the pictures. On receiving it I found that someone had made up a brass prop nut with an internally threaded sleeve on one side. They had drilled out the prop to suit the sleeve which was able to grab enough thread of the shortened crank.
Not trusting the set-up, I approached an engineer neighbour to see if he could help. I have read a very helpful article on modelenginenews.org where an Indian Mills had the bent crank drilled, tapped and a stud inserted. It only worked because the crank was so soft that it could be drilled and tapped with conventional tools. My engineer tested the Topedo crank and declared it too hard to drill & tap without softening the crank and rehardening when finished. He quite confidently attached the thread of a hardened Allen Cap screw by welding and machining back to original, then normalizing the crank in an oven. You can't pick that it has been repaired, although I haven't been game to run it. He was quite confident that the crank is now as strong or stronger than the original, but we will probably never know.
Chris, you mentioned Jon Fletcher, whom I have corresponded with quite a bit, but some time ago. I have lost contact and had suspected the worse. Do you know Jon's story?
Rod.

Rod- I haven't heard from Jon for a couple of years-unsure of his current status. Dereck ('fiery') might have more up to date info...?

Rod, your friend is a genius! I think it would be an honor for him if you did run it, even if on a test stand. I bet he is right, he restored that engine back to its native condition by his repair. I gather he knows his stuff.

Re: Small Enya engine 049 with a broken crank shaft?
Well, I got a reply back from Ken Enya.
No replacement crankshaft. I figured as much.
Will have to figure out my next move to fix it?
I'll take it to a machine shop I know, and ask to use their hardness tester to see how hard it is?
Then go from there?

Re: Small Enya engine 049 with a broken crank shaft?
Update:
Found a replacement crankshaft on the internet.
A guy in Germany had one for sale on eBay for about $26.00 plus $16.60 for shipping.
Crankshaft was in "Original Package"
He has a Enya 06 diesel crank for sale as well (same price)

Also found a Enya 06 or 08 for sale from a guy in Italy.

Below are the before and after crank replacement.
I'm one lucky guy to find a replacement crank for sale. Thanks to the net.
Anyway, here are photos of the completed rebuild of the Enya Reed 049 engine.

Purchased the engine for $14.50(plus $33.00 for shipping) on ebay from a Norwegian.
Then purchased a replacement crank from a guy in Germany on eBay for about $26.00 plus $16.60 for shipping.
For a total sum of $90.10
Not too bad?

Re: Small Enya engine 049 with a broken crank shaft?
$90 US? No, what is what that engine was selling for 15 years ago new in an on-line hobby store in Singapore, shipping not included. It is one of the rarer types and has been commanding more on E-Bay and other places.
Over the years I've bid on a couple, but bids started soaring beyond what I was willing to pay.
Another one I'd love to have is the OS Pet .06 C/L engine.

I purchased this 049 because it looked in good condition until I received it with a bend shaft.
Tried to heat it up and straighten it when it broke.
I passed up on the other Enya engine he had. It was a 06 rear reed induction.
In the photo I caught a glimpse of two broken fins on the head, and no prop nut and washer.
He was asking $28.50 (plus shipping) for that one.
Aussie friend gave me a heads up that a club mate is selling a Enya 08 diesel for $130.00 (us dollars).
used very little and has the box, wrenches, papers, the complete engine "stuff" for it.
Shipping should be $30 or $35?
I got a few of his club mate's Enya engines (049, 06, and 10) this year.
