Re: Follow Rusty's Memorial Traveling Engines!
Ok,
I am going to send off the Engines this week. I was able to take the Fox .35 Super Clown and the Li’l Jumpin Bean out to the field this morning. The Fox definitely needs to be broken in more. Hopefully by the end of the list it will be! It kept going lean and cutting out on me, I finally got one half decent flight with it and even at that it didn’t like inverted flight. It’s a shaker too which compounds the issue.
The RR1 ran better, but I really wanted to use Rusty’s handle to fly it and it was set up for 40’ lines. Too much, it too didn’t like inverted.
However, I flew them. The cool little .020 will have to wait for the next guy to do something with it. Here are a couple pictures and a couple videos. No need to watch the whole 7 minutes of the Super Clown. It gets pretty boring as it wouldn’t do transitions and it was lean so I kind of just flew the tank out. Some stunts, but not many.
If anyone was a member from the beginning they will understand the significance of these two planes selected for Rusty’s memorial. Also if you look closely at the handle you can see why it can only be Rusty’s. Tight lines brother.
Edit: Forgot to mention, that’s Rusty’s prop on that Bean.

Nothing like a well seasoned Bean. My dad built his in 66 and I'm still flying it to this day even though pieces fall off of it now and then.

Heart stopping moment when the Fox cut out during a loop early in the flight. Amazed that it caught and continued on. Rusty would be proud. Nice flying Ron.

Re: Follow Rusty's Memorial Traveling Engines!
Yeah, both engines needed some fiddling. Nothing wrong with them though. If I had more time I could have made them run perfectly. I always harp about bench running and running in the air are two completely different things. This is a good example of that. Totally my fault though for not checking things out first. I bolted on and flew. You get out of it what you put into it!

I couldn't think of a better way to honor Rusty than putting a Clown and Bean in the air with his memorial traveling engines! Great work Ron.

Yes, a good and fitting tribute to our great friend. Rusty would approve.

Re: Follow Rusty's Memorial Traveling Engines!
I'm breaking my own rule by hanging onto these engines longer an a week. Sorry Kim. I got a chance to mount and run the RR-1 today after putting a piece of fuel tubing on the needle to help seal any air leaks. Initially, when I ran it last weekend, it was difficult to start and the needle was very touchy. It ran better this time, but still not as smooth as I would like. I'm sure Kim will get it to be perfect.
Re: Follow Rusty's Memorial Traveling Engines!
Seems strange. One drilled out backplate and one OEM RR-1 backplate and they both run like hammered crap. I never looked at the tip of the needle. Is it bent or broke off?

No, the tip looks perfect. However, the needle seems excessively loose in the insert, the reason why I thought it could've been leaking air. I'll try a few different needles and see if the fit is better.
Re: Follow Rusty's Memorial Traveling Engines!
It was running a little funky when Ron had it too , but not that bad ? Went back and looked at the vid. and mainly when inverted . Maybe it picked up a piece of dead grass ?

Hey Jacob,
Take your time. I've got the planes picked out for the engines, and may pack them to Summer S.M.A.L.L. if the time frame works out.
Hope the RR-1 is feeling OK when it gets here...my trouble shooting will probably be limited to flushing and a few Voo Doo incantations!

I never ran the drilled out backplate. Just the OEM one you sent after the fact. There is nothing to stress over and I wish I would have taken the time to look it over. Just too darn busy these days. Along the way it will get sorted out. In the air it flew well for several laps, inverted not so great, but kept running . When I did a tight loop it cut out. Too soon, yep, that has always been my experience with tanked bees. I have spent the time to make hard pickup lines, pressure testing, NV sealing and tank sealing. Even the best running ones seem to falter in the air. They run like a dream on level runs. Stunting has always been a pain for me with an integral tank.
I know it can be done, just haven’t mastered that yet. Ken seems to be able to make it happen. Again, the engine may need a couple tweaks. I can’t remember if I replaced the venturi seal or if I re-used what was in it or even looked to see if one was there at all. It may be a good starting point.

Ron, it's been a painful journey. When you achieve Nirvana, it all goes south again.

Re: Follow Rusty's Memorial Traveling Engines!
Rusty's Traveling Engines are wrapping up their visit to Roseville. As probably the same for most of you, the RR-1 was the center of attention here. Mostly trying to iron out the kinks. Although I did have the .020 running for awhile. I would've ran the Fox if I could've gotten myself up to the task of rolling out my took cart that has all the larger engine mounts on it.
Here's Rusty's Traveling Engines with the original Traveling Propeller. Dead center on the signature card is Rusty's signature.

Re: Follow Rusty's Memorial Traveling Engines!
I really wish I had something built for the .020.
I still have the Scarinzi Queen Bee and the little combat airframe, but both would need too much time to have made airworthy.
Glad you were able to have some fun Jacob.

Re: Follow Rusty's Memorial Traveling Engines!
Rusty's Engines and their support equipment arrived safely this afternoon!
I plan to take them to Summer S.M.A.L.L. this coming Tuesday, flying them at that wonderful event, and then get them on the road the following Monday.
My Plane List, at this point, is to fly the Fox on my Uncle Wayne's restored Goldberg Wittman "Buster":
The .020 will fly in the Scientific "Kingpin" built and given to me by Breezy Hill Flyer Billy Lang:
The RR-1 will probably go on the Q-Tee...the second time the little parasol has been hauled aloft by such a cool engine:
And that's the PLAN at the moment!

Good to hear they're safe and sound.
I can't wait to see what you do with them, your plan sounds good!

Re: Follow Rusty's Memorial Traveling Engines!
Just a check-in with Rusty's Engines.
Gonna need s few extra days. They all went with me to Summer S.M.A.L.L. All got a bench run on their respective planes, but only 2 actually flew...which I intend to remedy this week!
I want to do the whole thing in one post (which can be difficult for me and my need for rambling), and will the final flights and note writing in this week.

Rusty's Traveling Engines
So,
I'm on the verge of packing Rusty's Engines out to batjac Mark in Oregon, and STILL sifting through the footage and photos of their two-week+ visit with me. They ALL got some flying time, and I'm very honored for the privilege of being part of this tribute.
I put in three last flights with the Fox .35 late yesterday, and am cleaning them a bit before they hit the road.
Got to write a few notes in the Log Book, and they'll be heading west.
My full set of notes will follow.
Thanks again to Jason, Jacob, and everybody participating in this salute to our bud!
