Re: Follow Rusty's Memorial Traveling Engines!
Thanks! I wrote in the book and enjoyed reading all the other entries as well. The engines pictured are just some of my favorites that I keep on a bookshelf lately. There are so many more that I’m almost embarrassed to admit it. Boxes full of them. New ones. Worn out ones. Parts for them, etc. Not to mention those mounted on firewalls. It has started to weigh on me lately how many I have hoarded over the years. My mother had become a hoarder in her last years and my wife and I have been cleaning out her house lately since she passed away. It has made me stop and think about what will happen to all my “stuff” when I’m gone. It rarely means as much to the next generation. My kids will never run and fly any of them and certainly have no interest in a giant collection of Cox engines and the planes that go with them. It has brought me much joy and is quite sad to realize what will happen to them once they reach new hands. I have spent a couple of months trying to sell, give away, and re-home my mom’s stuff that no one in our family wants. Numerous trips to the dumpster! I bet a lot of members in this forum have been having those thoughts.

Re: Follow Rusty's Memorial Traveling Engines!
Wow! Troy, you have a treasure trove of Cox powered fun flyers! Especially love your Shark Face with rotary valve .049 RR-1 with form factor of the Golden Bee reedie. I bet that the Shark Face really hauls as a sport flyer under the extra horses of the RR-1, good way to bring in the groceries. And, the TD .010 powered Wee Stick, too.
Good going on doing a nice photo presentation prior to forwarding to Ron, in memory of Rusty.

Re: Follow Rusty's Memorial Traveling Engines!
Troy, your Shark Face with the RR-1 moved out like it was a pylon racer! In glide it slowed down, glide reminded me of my rudder only and two channel planes.Tee Bee wrote:Thanks! The Sharkface is a hoot!
From what I recall, the S.F. had a slightly smaller wingspan, as a rudder only, built light probably a .020 Tee Dee would be a good ticket for it. Of course back then, there were the lower powered British half-A glow engines, and a bunch of suitable diesel half-A's to suit, along with on our side of the pond, the US OK Cubs and other's offerings.
Your field has something we lack, very nice full grass. Ours is hard packed clay earth and shrubs. That is what we call grass here. Plus, your field has wide open spaces with the surrounding farmland, it appears, not much different than ours.

Very nice pictures Troy. Glad you managed to take part, even with everything going on.
Re: Follow Rusty's Memorial Traveling Engines!
Speaking of these memorial travelling engines, for those unfamiliar, this was done in remembrance of Rusty Knowlton, 1956 - 2020. He was quite an individual with his knowledge and experience with model aircraft and engines with a background of electronics engineering and a corporate trainer. Even though he suffered from kidney disease, he did not let that slow him down, always on the upbeat, quite a testimony.
Here is his obituary.
Thanks to @Jason_WI donating the engines and accessories for this competition, Jacob @Admin sponsoring, and others providing corollary support, these travelling engines gave the impetus for various CEF members to express their gratitude to Jason's family and friends by participating.

I still come across plenty of Rusty's posts in old threads. He'll always be missed here.

Yes, I'm happy to see that Rusty is still listed as moderator of the Redneck zone. Gone but certainaly not forgotten.

Perhaps one way to ensure posts are self moderated with respect towards other's views considered disagreeable, is to rename it to Rusty's Memorial Redneck Zone?rsv1cox wrote:Yes, I'm happy to see that Rusty is still listed as moderator of the Redneck zone. Gone but certainly not forgotten.
It would be a way to continue to honor him plus perhaps help others mindful of how he used to moderate.

Re: Follow Rusty's Memorial Traveling Engines!
Hello everyone, this thought written by Tee Bee about: "what will become of things when we are no longer in this world"... is when you become aware of how fleeting our time is and how valuable it becomes when you really realize it.
It is true that, present and future generations have other types of incentives today, other things to do and that a large number of people of the new generation are not attracted to these beautiful engines and models, it is part of life itself and the process of change.
For all this, even more so many times I cling to groups like this CEF, that keep time or make it not go away too quickly.
It is not easy to express sentimentally in language all that it means, but, it is beautiful to know that many preserve and enjoy these times by making these wonderful engines work.
I have often thought of people who I don't see active on the forum. I honestly wonder what's happening with them. Maybe I'm not informed, but I'd like to know. For example, IAN, Jason-Wi, among others... a hug to everyone.

Good suggestion George...........Rusty's Memorial Redneck Zone.
And Mauricio, nicely said. Also, you can go to the Memberlist above on the tool bar to find members last post. Jason checks in occasionally but IAN not since 2022.

Re: Follow Rusty's Memorial Traveling Engines!
I haven’t built or flown any models in a few years due to life moving me in different directions but I still check in here from time to time to, hopefully, see some posts by familiar names. I still have all my Cox engines, parts, and airplanes. I haven’t left the hobby but have been on a hiatus for a while for various reasons. I’m still fascinated by the little engines and the small planes that use them for power! I also have many fond memories of running and flying them as well as of the great people I’ve met while doing so. My local club has done all but dissolved lately with old members passing on and a lack of new members joining. It has been a sad process to see. Most of the great guys I once flew with are no longer around. Our flying field is falling into disrepair due to lack of active members. Mauricio is right. It is a natural process but a sad one. All the little “outlaw” fields that I was flying at have turned into alartment complexes, subdivisions, and even a bus barn for the local school district. I can’t make things go back to how they once were but am struggling to sort out how I will approach the hobby going forward.

Hi Tee Bee, it's sad to read the reality of your environment, but it's starting to be common in many places... also, part of the formula is to share with other fans... so how to approach the hobby and keep it entertained... it's starting to be stronger and stronger to share in this way, with people who are geographically in different parts of the world but who have the same desire, you're accompanied and you can share, also, the work in the workshop becomes more intense, the assembly, playing with engines, restoring models, starting engines and filling up with the smell of fuel and when it starts to get scarce the place to fly, when you go out on your motorcycle you find just a place where you can at least distract yourself for a couple of hours, film and share the whole adventure on the forum, I'm sure that you'll find a way to have fun and even get excited... one way that I also started to enjoy is observing my models, as if they were a painting and when the planets align, I'm going to fly it, even if in my club I'm alone for different hours, or also in some remote place in my city in the same nature. It's a beautiful hobby, you just have to rediscover it! Hugs, friend!

Re: Follow Rusty's Memorial Traveling Engines!
Hi TeeBee, Glad you stopped by…. Just wanted to say thank you for the videos you have posted…. The Cox powered small RC videos were part of the inspiration for me to start flying gas power again after a long time away…. I get it about the clubs… Our local club has been gone about ten years now…. Key members passed on and just not any momentum left….. I’m the only one that still flys…..Nearest active club is seventy miles away…..So I go out in the boonies to fly gas power, But that’s OK, I enjoy the outing….. CEF helps a lot…. To me it’s sort of a “virtual” club where one can still interact with like minded fellows….I hope life’s pathways will lead you to the joy of flying again one of these days

Re: Follow Rusty's Memorial Traveling Engines!
I sadly miss Rusty, a CL enthusiast who always had some comforting comments on my RC flight videos no matter how poor the visibility of my small planes on the screen was, and in spite he was more into CL than into RC modeling.
I have always been a loner with my COX hobby here in my part of the world - except having you guys as my virtual friends on CEF to share the joy of owning and running and flying COX engines with - and time is passing, with one particular benefit at least for me..having retired a year ago and working part time only allows me to go to the small meadows nearby and fly my planes, during working hours of others, not meeting and disturbing joggers and dog walkers so often..only the retired ones like myself...and yes, when seeing a nice opportunity on ebay to buy some old stock COX engine or parts I now stop and ask myself the question if I will really ever use that in the rest of my active years that are dwindling fast, or just hoard it and thereby convict it to become from a gem to me to no one's junk when I pass....and decline buying more often than before..

I always had a chuckle about the irony of flying a plane called "Littler Satan" in a church yard- Think about it!!
