Dan named this one the Death Stick
My buddy Dan had this whatever it is out to fly yesterday. Previous flights were not so good due to the Babe Bee having some issues. Dan took it apart, changed the reed and it certainly was needed. He uses a 3 blade prop and the tank is filled with Teflon balls to take up capacity. The engine was running on the ground about 1.5 minutes. We were having him launch with 30 seconds left, he launched 15 seconds early on the first flight.

Thats too funny. Quite the neat contraption he built there. Do you have any closer photos of it to see what it actually looks like?

It's called a charybdis or McCutchen Wing. Outerzone has plans for two versions.

How about “the sub-orbital gnat whacker”? That is too cool.

Hmmm...
Ken Willard's version uses a 36" length of 4"x1/2" balsa for the wing. I just might have a 4"x36" plank of SIG airfoil shaped balsa. I'll have to take a look...

Re: Dan named this one the Death Stick
Mark, you can see how this thing lands. It takes some abuse. Dan used a spruce center section, the leading edge was a piece of bass and the aft of the blade was balsa. He also glassed the center section. I'm quite certain, any hardwood would suffice for the center section.

Re: Dan named this one the Death Stick
I'm fascinated by these types of flying models. The "flying shop-rag" is a hoot.. and also uses a Babe Bee. I've wondered more than once if "twin" Babe Bee's mounted horizontally-opposed.. at the opposing-tips of a rotor-blade, could achieve lift via opposing/bendable flaps on the opposing trailing-edges of said rotor-blade? Maybe provide a centralized undercarriage as a counterbalance; as well as an integral launch-pad.

Wow, loved that book Mark. Fun projects from an imaginative mind. I have seen a couple of them profiled before but I especially liked the Blue Angels flying in formation.

At one point, Ken Willard did an RC version of the Blue Angels, but I don't have the plans...
