Re: Just bought a .049 and I have some concerns
I am aware of that. I intend to give it a decent dihedral to keep it stable.
It will not be the first RC aircraft that I fly, I also have a simulator on my PC.

That's fine then, just making sure you were aware! Please see your PMs about the PZL plan

BTW, if you are referring to the Guillows Spite RC conversion topic, mine is going to have ailerons, so I hope it will be easier to keep level.

Guillow's makes two different sized Spitfires.
Are you building the smaller one or the larger one? In either case you'll find adding ailerons a challenge especially when trying to keep the weight down to a minimum.
Ron Cribbs has built the smaller !6" version without and I'm building the 28 5/8" 400 series version and am still thinking about adding ailerons. We have posted a lot of information on building these planes that would be informative to you. Do a "search".

No Dave, Dirk is building a WW2 Polish fighter which is low wing, not a Spitfire, it was me who refered him to the Spit build in case he wasn't aware of the stability problems.

Re: Just bought a .049 and I have some concerns
Well, I guess the weight concerns are still valid for all planes with similar layout, Spitfire or not. I read through most of the topics in the Models and Modeling section, and they were very interesting indeed.
Anyway, I have plans of the PZL 62, but quite a bit larger one - 1m wingspan and a 2.5cc engine. It only has ailerons and an elevator. I will build something along these lines, only smaller. I hope it will be ok.

Wilf:
I was thrown off couse by Dirk's reference to Spit' builds. (Guess I'm writing in too many different threads this morning).
I'd better get my morning coffee and wake up!

I have six control line "Federation Droid Fighters" per Star Wars Episode 1, produced by Cox and powered by Sure Starts. My guess is that's what they are referring to.

I must ask you, Dirk, are you an experienced R/C flyer? The reason for asking is that PZL 62 will be VERY unstable as a model, low wings always are (See the long discussion on this forum about the stability of the Spitfire)
Anyway, I'm thinking, since the Guillows were originally made for free flight, and nowadays they are being flown as RC without ailerons, that would mean that they are inherently stable (on roll axis)? Otherwise, having no means to correct any instability with ailerons, the plane would eventually flip upside down?

Re: Just bought a .049 and I have some concerns
Yes and no.
It is possible to counteract roll with the rudder (seee rudder rolls) but far easier with ailerons.
Still low wing model tend to be less stable than high wing models.

IMO
If you can make it a 'bank n yank, ie aileron elevator then do so.
I'm a reasonably experienced rc bod and the little
Rudder elevator thing I built recently is not really suitable
For beginners, is quite challenging to fly and that
Is a high wing with silly amount of dihedral/not quite the
ludicrous amount the designer intended but hey.
When I was a kid the hottie here (they still make.them) was
The Cambria Fun fighter range these are ail/ele and fly beautifully.
I think rudder/ele is making things difficult for yourself and
It won't fly as well as it could be made to.
But see what Ron says cos he's the most recent builder/flyer
Of similar.

Actually, I am mistaken and apologize. Slawomir has an account as reseller with us. I was not aware until now that he clipped our pics but that's fine as long as we are the ones supplying him the product.
Since he is your reseller, perhaps you have an idea why do they only sell .049s?

Re: Just bought a .049 and I have some concerns
All the engines from cox internationals are .049. They are all modified cox surestarts. Bernie created tanks and more to create engines like the Babe bee and Texaco 2.

You guys are scaring the crap outta me!
Luckily I have an experienced pilot close by to help me with the maiden. I will post the results in the build section.
Dirk,
Building ailerons into a guillows is certainly possible it's just that it would have been more engineering than I was willing to do. I kinda wish I had right about now but, who knows it may work.

"Still low wing model tend to be less stable than high wing models."
Due to the "pendulum effect" of the fuselage on high wing models.
